Mike: By now you ought to have the Summer 2011 "Generator." Do you share any lines with Archbishop Spalding ? {A'bishop of Baltimore: 1864-1872} I'm hoping to get some info on his MacAtee lines in Charles County for a future "Generator." The new Bishop in Evansville sure sounds like he has roots back here in Southern Maryland. Wade: Any ideas on this ? I understand that the new Episcopal bishop for the Washington Diocese {includes Prince George's, Charles, & St. Mary's} will be a woman. Keep us posted with what you find out, Mike. Dear Dave, In my working files, I see that the Richard Spalding (16 April 1777 - 7 Sept. 1850) who was father of Martin J. Spalding, Archbishop of Baltimore Maryland married Henrietta "Henny" Thompson 20 Jan. 1817 at the Holy Name of Mary Church, Marion Co., KY ( Washington County Marriage Records: Spalding; Richard to Henny Thompson 1/17/1817). Richard Spalding's daughter Julia Ann Spalding became a nun, Mother Julia ( I do not have proof of the order) but I did find the following which offer clues to McAtee and Thompson relationships to Archbishop Spalding: Holy Name Of Mary Church Records: p.21 Martin John Spalding, Calvary's best known native, was born May 23, 1810; the same year that the Spalding home on Lover's Lane was built. His father Richard, eldest son of Benedict Spalding, who came here from Maryland and settled on the Rolling Fork in 1790. His mother was Henrietta Hamilton, daughter of Leonard Hamilton, likewise from Maryland, who came to Kentucky in 1791. His mother died when he was just six years old.... in 1850 Martin John became Bishop of Louisville. SPALDING, RICHARD AUGUSTINE & HENRIETTA HAMILTON (son of Benedict Joseph Spalding, Jr. & Alethaire Abell)(daughter of Leonard Hamilton & Ann "Nancy"McAtee)(married 7-28-1801 at Holy Name of Mary Church) Baptized Martin Spalding, 6-04-1810, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Birth date not given. Sponsors, Martin Heutz and Mary Ford. Parents: Richard Spalding and Henrica Hamilton. as to which priest may have performed the baptism above: M A R I O N C O U N T Y - W H I T E B A P T I S M S St. Charles Catholic Church, St. Mary's, Ky. Olson Copyright 1999 - Printed by McDowell Publications and finally: "Catholic History" no author or compiler listed: Archbishop Martin John Spalding attended St. Thomas's Seminary at Bardstown, KY & in the year 1830, just before his 20th birthday on April, 1830, he sailed for Italy. After 4 yrs. study, he was ordained a priest in Rome, then returned home to serve as president of St. Thomas's Seminary & Rector of Bardstown, Cathedral. Father Spalding became Bishop of Louisville in 1850, & Archbishop of Baltimore in 1864. Two of Bishop Spalding's sister became nuns. His younger brother, Benedict Joseph & his nephew, John Lancaster Spalding both became priests. A cousin Catharine Spalding, was Mother Superior of the Sisters of Nazareth in nearby Nelson County. The Richard Spalding Bible [as last I knew] was in the possession of Mrs. Henrietta Spalding Boldick, Lebanon, KY. Richard Spalding is buried in Holy Name of Mary at Calvary Marion County, KY Hwy 208 south of Lebanon. (Rev. John Lyons, Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Records, Calvary, Marion Co, KY.) Richard Spalding's wife Henrietta Hamilton born 31 May 1781 was the daughter of Leonard Hamilton and Nancy Ann McAtee. of Charles County, Maryland. MARYLANDERS TO KENTUCKY 1775 -1825 HENRY C.
