    1. Re: [MDSTMARY] My Edwards lineage
    2. REm your question: Other than proximity of residence, are there any records that associate Samuel Higgs' family with Thomas Suit(e)'s family directly? ---- My Answer: Possibly- According to tax records in NC- a man named Samuel "Sute" is found in WARREN CO., NC tax records in 1780 in Daniel Sledge's District. *He may be the one from Samuel Higgs, Sr.'s admin. accts. in SMC in 1759. I have an old email from June 2008 from Linda noting a man named Samuel Suite was being paid by the estate of Samuel Higgs, Sr. in 1759 in SMC so that means this specific Samuel Suite was probably born before 1739. Not sure how he connects to Thomas Suite, Sr. but I strongly believe this particular Samuel Suite was a son of Thomas Suite, *Jr.*(not Sr.) and was thus a grandson of Thos. Suite, Sr. and a brother of the Dent Suit, Jr. who was found in Granville Co., NC in 1784-1790. It is my belief after much research that Thos. Suite, Sr. was b. in the 1680's at latest and was very old when he died by 1771. It is a good possibility due to his advanced age that he had more children who may have predeceased him--that we do not know about-- but no records have been found to support this. I say this because we know that Benjamin Suit (d. 1810 SMC) was s/o Dent Suite, I, (d. 1792 SMC testate) who was son of Thos. Suite, I. Benjamin Suite had a son named Alexander Suite (land records prove this) who was in the 1778 Oath of Allegiance in Harford Co. MD (near Balto.) He was married in 1784 in Greene Co., TN and d. in the War of 1812 somewhere near Ohio (per muster roll.) Alexander Suite/Suit (I)was probably b. by 1758 (estimate)so his father Benjamin Suit was probably b. bef. 1738 so his father Dent SUIT, I, (d. 1792 SMC)was probably b. before 1718 in my estimation. Christian Dent, Dent Suite, Sr.'s possible mother was apparently still single in 1712 when her own father John Dent died. We also do not know if Thomas Suite was married prior to m. Christian Dent. No known records. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] O'Bryan in Maryland
    2. Jamey McLoughlin
    3. Hi All, Don, I think we spoke back when I was working on my line of O'Bryans as well. William O'Bryan (1763) was my 3rd great grandfather and Lewis O'Bryan was his brother. I based much of my research on a story my great grandmother told. She said our O'Bryans were English, not Irish and the "O" had been dropped. She said our first ancestor in Maryland was raised by a wealthy Col. According to a probate from Charles County in 1758 John Broyne died leaving his wife Catherine, sons: William, James, and Peter, and daughter: Jane Yates. If you look back to the inventory of Col John Bayne of Charles County in 1700 and in a list of servants, a John Broyne is listed. So there is my wealthy colonel. Then I find where Peter O'Bryan died PG County in 1793. William and Lewis are listed as sons. (I have wondered if they left Maryland to Kentucky in the second trip led by Clement Gardiner in 1800?) Back up to Peter's brother William. He married Elizabeth Douglass and they had a son named John. This John died in Charles County in 1783. He left a will and named a son Charles. Charles started the line of Brian's from Hardin County, Kentucky. I descend from them as well. This is all just my Opinion. 3. Thanks, Randy, for your helpful response. I only just downloaded the recorded wills of Thomas Suit 1765 and Joseph Edwards 1783 today. Thomas Suit's recorded will St. Mary's County Register of Wills Wills 1733-1776 Vol TA1 Filmed by Maryland Hall of Records Images 662-663 of 794 Volume TA#1 Pages 616-617 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-25106-46412-66?cc=1803986&wc=MM1X-SVM:n1259355819 Will of Joseph Edwards dated 8 Sep 1783, proved May Sessions 1794 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19462-368-65?cc=1867501&wc=10921757 North Carolina, Probate Records 1735-1970, Halifax, Wills, 1781-1824 vol. 3 Vol. 3, Page 228 Image 261 of 763 It appears to me that if Walter Brewster's estimates of the birth years of Joseph Edwards' children are at least somewhat accurate, then a Mary Ann Higgs born about 1749 could not be the mother of the first five children: Sarah, Jarrott, Joseph, John, and Peter. But she could possibly be the mother of Mary, my Stourton, Jonathan, Ann, and Jesse. Possibly, but I do not know. But was Maryan, Joseph's wife, the same person as Mary Ann Higgs born about 1749? If not, then whoever Maryan Edwards was, she might be the mother of more of the younger children, but not of Sarah Edwards Daniel, the eldest, who was a granddaughter of Thomas Suit. Will have to check for information on Richard Suit and whether he could be Maryan's/MaryAnn's father, as you men-tioned that some have suggested. Also, need to find someone to explain how to access the digital images on the Maryland State Archives site. That worked fine for me a few years ago, but now find it impossible to search (successfully). 3. Hi Dan, This is what I have for Joseph Edwards (d. 1794), Halifax County, NC: Joseph Edwards married first, the daughter, Sarah (?), of Thomas Suit, Sr. and Christian Dent before 1765 and they had a daughter named Sarah Edwards (b. 1755). Will of Thomas Suite, SMC 10/16/1765-11/4/1771. Children: Dent, Thomas, Ann Noe. Grandson: Dent Suite of Thomas. Granddaughter: Sarah Edwards of Joseph Edwards. Exec: Daughter-in-law, Mary Bright. Wit: Hezekiah Turner,Nathaniel Suite, Samuel Cooksey Barron. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Joseph's first wife was likely deceased before his father in law wrote his will on 16 Oct 1765. Joseph married second, Maryan. I suspect that they were married about 1758 based on the birth dates of their children: Jarrot, Joseph, John, Peter, Mary, Stourton, Jonathan, Ann, and Jesse. Writing in 1994 (two issues of the Chester Co. Genealogical Society "Bulletin"), Walter Whatley Brewster states: "Joseph, Jr. and Maryan (Suit) Edwards had the following children: Sarah Edwards, b. ca. 1755, m. Ambrose Daniel ca. 1773; Jarrott Edwards, b. ca. 1757, m. 1) Susannah Porter, and 2) Rebecca Bell; Joseph Edwards, III, ca. 1759, m. Elizabeth (Turner); John Edwards, b. ca. 1761, d. 1820, m. Olive Exum; Peter Edwards, b. ca. 1763; Mary Edwards, b. ca. 1765, d. 1861, m. Iles Cooper; Stourton Edwards, b. ca. 1768, d 15 Nov 1838, m. Sarah _____: Jonathan Edwards b. ca. 1770, m. Mary _____; Ann Edwards, b. ca. 1772; and Jesse Edwards, b. ca. 1774." Also, notice in Joseph's will that he mentions his daughter Sarah separately from his and Maryan's children. Will of Joseph Edwards (my transcription), Halifax Co.. NC will book 1781-1825 vol. 3. p.228; 8 Sep 1783; proved May Session 1794 To: Son Jarrot Edwards 150 A of land laying on the north side of the Horse Pin Branch. To: beloved Maryan all the land whereon I now live and all my househod furniture and all of my personal effects for her natural life or widowhood. To: at my widows death or marriage, I give to my daughter Sarah Daniel one feather bed, cow, and calf. To; my children Joseph, John, Peter, Mary, Stourton, Jonathan, Ann, Jesse. each a feather bed, cow, and calf. At the death of my widow all of my land to be sold and the money distributed to each of my children equally, except Jarrot. And the rest of my estate to be devided between all my children equally. Exec: Wife Maryan and son Jarrot equally Wit: Malicka Butt, Richard Suit, James Neal, Thomas Hall Now, who is Maryan? There are some reseachers who say that she is the daughter of Samuel Higgs and his wife Elizabeth. I have also seen some who believe that she is the daughter of Richard Suit. I am not sure and have not found any proof either way. Randy On Sun, Dec 30, 2012 at 9:55 PM, Daniel B. But found no Robert Stourton living in the 17th and 18th centuries. I also found the published parish register books for the village church of Stourton in Wiltshire on the same site, but no Robert Stourton was listed. This Robert who died in 1715 may not have been related to the Stourton barons. I don't know. Am hoping to find something a bit closer to Robert's parents' generation of the 1600s. ;) Dan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found the following about the history of St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD. It began as a school started by the Sisters of Charity: "The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth opened St. Mary's Academy (SMA) in 1885 on the grounds of the property known as Rose Hill in Leonardtown. Mrs. Richard H. Miles bequeathed the property to Father Charles Jenkins, S.J., with the intent that it be used by "a religious order to conduct a Catholic school." SMA grew rapidly as a coeducational boarding school and accepted students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The burgeoning population of St. Mary's County and Southern Maryland soon rendered the academy too small and a new school building was erected in 1936. In 1956, the school expanded yet again with a dormitory, convent and chapel. With the opening of the new, all boys Ryken High School, the sisters carried on their selfless dedication as a school for young women." I'm afraid that I do not know about a photo archive. Although I've lived in Maryland my entire life, my roots are farther north in Harford and Cecil counties. Leigh Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. A revision of part of my previous posting seems in order. I'm still curious whether there is a record of Joseph Edwards's first wife's given name as Sarah. But I can see why it seems unlikely that Thomas Suite had a daughter named Mary Ann or Maryan who was not named in his will and the naming of Sarah Edwards as daughter of Joseph Edwards does seem to imply that Sarah Edwards' mother (whatever her name might have been) was deceased. 3. Nuns really didn't keep very close tabs on their fellow nuns' "civilian" families in those days. The nun who was an informant for one of my great-great-great-aunts, for example. My GGG-aunt was over 90 years old when she died about 1920. The nun informant had her parents' names right, but not her father's place of birth (the death certificate said Armagh, Ireland, but I have tons of evidence he was born in Washington Co., KY, and none that he was born in Ireland). However, I suspect that the GGG-aunt's grandfather or great-grandfather may have been born in Armagh, and it's the only clue I have to their origin. Mary McCauley Kraeszig [1]tippit83@comcast.net wrote: I also found the FAG listing for a Sister Rose Agnes Wathen death as 1907 but no date of birth. To me that is strange for a convent to NOT know all the vital info for one of their sisters. Best bet is to call the Sisters of Charity (502) 348-1500 and see what they have to say. G. 1. [MDSTMARY] My Edwards lineage
    2. Daniel B. Troublefield
    3. Hello St Marys Listers, My 4th great-grandparents were Stourton (alias Strutton) Edwards, 1767-1838, and Sarah Foreman of Taylors Creek, York County, South Carolina. All of my Edwards lineage from Strutton on down lived in York County, South Carolina, after 1800. My lineage continues with their daughter Martha Jane "Patsy" Edwards, 1797-1872 (wife of Archibald "Archie" Steele); Patsy's son George Eli McDuffie "Captain Mack" Steele (1832-1895) (husband of Margaret Malvina Partlow); Mack's son Charles McDuffie Steele (1875-1920)(husband of Mary Elizabeth Cornelia Faris)(my mother's grandparents). ======== My Stourton/Strutton was a son of Joseph Edwards, died 1794; and grandson of Joseph Edwards, died 1746. Am aware that Thomas Suit(e) (of 1765 will) had a daughter (name unknown) who married Joseph Edwards and had a daughter Sarah Edwards. Is there any record that Stourton's father Joseph (1794 will) had a wife named Sarah? Or that Thomas Suit(e) (of 1765 will) had a daughter named Sarah? A direct, contemporary record from their lifetimes? I understand that there is no proof of my Stourton's mother's identity. Some think that his mother was Mary Ann Suit. That is the view that I learned from Walter W. Brewster's articles on our Edwards families for The Bulletin (Chester District Genealogical Society, Richburg, South Carolina). Linda Reno believes that she was Mary Ann Higgs. Joseph Edwards (1794 will) had a wife named Maryan or Mary Ann. Perhaps she was a Higgs, but is there any direct proof? Deeds perhaps? Do we know for certain that Thomas Suit(e)'s 1765 will named ALL of his grandchildren living at the time? Joseph Edwards (1794 will) had eleven children, all but the last four may have been living in 1765 when Thomas Suite wrote his will. Other than proximity of residence, are there any records that associate Samuel Higgs' family with Thomas Suit(e)'s family directly? Possible indirect link: What connection might Samuel Suite (mentioned in Samuel Higgs' loose estate papers) be to Thomas Suite? Any records of a close association (other than residence) between the families of Samuel Higgs and Joseph Edwards? My questions, above, are based on a posting by Linda Reno on 9 Aug 2009. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MDSTMARY/2009-08/1249842252 Thanks for all help! Dan
