    3. So Eleanor was not a Gough? Another women in our line without a maiden name. My very early research had Gough listed. I will work on this line again. Any suggestions? 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] O'Bryan in Maryland

    3. A couple of years ago I attempted to map out the current location of Maidstone by inputting the metes & bounds of various tracts found in deeds & surveys into a program called Deed Mapper. I'd also purchased several plat maps for Charles Co. to help place the tracts. Over the years, many tracts or parts of the original tract, were resurveyed & combined with other tracts & vacant land into new patents with new names. As these larger tracts were sold off or divided, the names changed once again in the deeds. Bristol was patented in 1679 for John Waters with 100 acres. By his will in 1692 he left 50 acres of Bristol to sons James, Joseph & Lewis. The 1783 Assessment shows Joseph Waters in possession of 50 acres part of Bristol & in 1795 Joseph sold 43 acres to his son Zephania Waters & 3 acres to James Waters Sr (his brother?) I've traced this further, but that is another story. In 1783 John O'Bryan was possessed with 47 acres of part of Bristol. Don't know what happened to the other 3 acres of the 50 mention in William O'Bryan's will, nor have I figured out how William came to own it. Also in 1783 John O'Bryan had 60 acres of Bryans Hazard, 60 acres of Piney Level & 10 acres of Grays Enlargement. I don't know anything about Bryans Hazard (can't even find a patent for it), but John had purchased Piney Level & Grays Enlargement from Samuel Hanson in 1780 (Deed bk V 3 folio 473) John O'Bryan wrote his will 29 Dec 1783 and was probated 10 Feb 1784. He mentions wife Mary & sons William & Charles. Executors were his wife & brother Basil O'Bryan. Witnessed by James Carrico son of John & Timothy Farrand. Deed Book IB 10 folio 297 in 1813 shows Reverend William O'Bryan, Mary Ann O'Bryan & Basil O'Bryan selling Bristol, Piney Level & Grays Enlargement to Thomas Gibbons Waters & Vincent King both of Georgetown, Washington, DC. The deed states that Bristol contained 156 acres, mentions a Mill Seat & also Waters Mill. (The 3 acres of Bristol mentioned above as being sold by Joseph Waters to James Waters contained a mill.) Deed also shows Piney Level being 64 acres & Grays Enlargement as 14 acres. In 1827 Thomas G. Waters recevied a patent for Three Brothers containing 532 acres. This was a resurvey of numerous tracts including Bristol, Piney Level & Grays Enlargement. The patent records at Plats.net contains 42 pages. on the 21st page is a drawing of the metes & bounds of the following adjoining tracts: Bristol, Piney Level, Grays Enlargement, Loving Brothers, Farrands Fortune, Thomas' Folly, Thomas' Begining, & Dispute. In 1828 Thomas Carrico started buying up tracts of land in Charles Co., MD. In the 1840's, by 3 different deeds from heirs of Thomas G. Waters, he had come to own 344 acres of the Three Brothers. By the time he died in 1881, he owned, or had owned much of the land west of Hughesville including parts of Gates Range, Maidstone, Loving Brothers etc. which were then devided amongst his many children. His daughter Servilla recieved the 344 acres of Three Brothers as part of her share. I was able to track the sale of Three Brothers down to the current owner. One of the deeds indicated it was on both sides of the road from Dentsville to Hughsville which appears to be Burnt Store Rd. Again, looking at my plat maps, the land is on Burnt Store Rd, just east of Oliver Shop Rd & North west of Gilbert Pond. Gates Range was just west of Hughesville with the eastern shape following the same course as Rt. 5 almost like a backwards C (not sure how else to describe.) Maidstone was towards the center of Gates Range (along with Canterbury) just north or perhaps even including part of present day Gilbert Pond. So, to make a long story short, Bristol was in the near vicinity of the land I mentioned below. AND, I think the William Bryan who married Elizabeth Douglass is a different William Byran than the William O'Bryan who owned Bristol. 3. Thanks, Mike, for the additional information. My Stourton Edwards line connects to Joseph Edwards who died in North Carolina in 1794. It doesn't appear that Rev. John Edwards of Baltimore County was directly related to the Joseph Edwards families in Saint Marys, does it? The Reverend is identified as a native of County Brecon (Brecknock) in Wales in the book referenced by Ms. Hanigan. Did Philip Key of Charles Co. connect to the Joseph Edwards families, also? (as well as to Rev. John Edwards' godson John Stokes?) Was looking at your Charles County families website and was glad to identify Margaret "Margery" Mainwaring, widow of Richard Gardiner, as the wife of Robert Stourton who died in 1715. (Although you don't have her listed as Stourton's wife, the records you list under Margaret show the connection as "Stortan", "Horton," and "Hortoun.") Thanks very much! Jeremiah Newton, baptized 10/12/1771, son of Joseph Newton (son of Clement Newton who d. 1760). Note that Clement Newton also had a son named Alban or Albian Newton and that Richard and Chloe Clarke also had a son named Albin. Joseph Newton's wife was Mildred and after looking at the data, I'm pretty sure she was Mildred Knott, dau. of William Knott and Ann Mattingly (dau. of Thomas Mattingly (d. 1714) and Elizabeth ____. Ursula Greenwell, dau. of Edward and Catherine. I can't identify the parents of this Edward. Was he Edmund rather than Edward? Edward and Catherine also had a daughter named Rosa who was baptized 6/23/1771, GP: Richard Clarke and Sarah Greenwell. 2/1791: Citation ordered against Eleanor Halket (Hackett?) to show cause why she detains in her hands the property of Edward Greenwell. (Orphan Ct. Rec.,Fenwick). 3/1791: Ursula Greenwell, admx. of Edward Greenwell vs. Eleanor Halket for detention of property of Edward Greenwell. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick). Anybody know who this Eleanor Halket could be? Can anyone add new data to all of this? Richard Langhorn Clarke who was born about 1749/50 in St. Mary's County, Maryland and moved to Nelson County, Ky about 1790 10/12/1771: Baptism of Jeremiah Newton, son of Joseph and Mildred. 3. Dan, common family surnames came into existence long before our ancestors arrived in Maryland. I am not sure where you are looking but sometimes the naming pattern: John Edwards (of John)" Is used in documents to help the reader differentiate among commonly used first names within family groups. 3. No, John. I haven't found the maiden name of Elizabeth. I also think it is great to have this information on the website because a LOT of researchers have the list of marriages for Elizabeth Guibert that I mentioned earlier--the marriages that were actually for Elizabeth _________. And, I agree, the dates for the earlier marriages were too early for Elizabeth Guibert. Do you have any idea who the other Elizabeth was? 3. Randy, You had posted this information in November and at that time wondered if Sarah, widow of John Edwards, was a Turner as the names seemed to fall in line with the family of Edward Turner. I think you're right. Edward Turner and his wife Eleanor Wilson had 14 children, one of whom was Sarah "Sally" who was single until at least 1781. Since the first two children of John Edwards were of age in 1796, I have them born prior to 1778 (assuming the girls were at least 18). This would mean that John Edwards was married twice and that the first two children, at least, were by the first wife. Further, I'd bet the first wife was Elizabeth "Betsy" Turner, sister of Sarah. "Betsy" was born November 7, 1758. Will of Edward Turner, SMC, planter, 1/14/1772-5/1/1773. Son: Samuel, "Watson's Choice", 249 ac.; "Hingston", 50 ac., "Partner's Purchase" in Charles Co., 50 ac. Son: William, "Turner's Forest", Charles Co., 116 ac.; one negro; and a child's part of moveable estate. Son: Randolph, "Saint Vincent" in Charles Co., 50 ac. Wife: Dwelling plantation during her lifetime and then to son, Charles Turner; negro man named Guy; negro women Lucy and Valentine; and a child's part of moveable estate. Son: Joshua, negro boy James and a child's pt. of moveable estate. Son: Charles, Exec., mulatto Hannah and a horse. To: My six sons and six daughters, moveable estate. Wit: James Eden, George Goldie, Charles Reeves, Thomas Goldsmith. CODICIL: Son, Randolph, my mulatto child, William Shaw. Daughter: Betsy, a bed. Daughter: Sally, a bed. To: Nelly, a bed. Wife: As negro woman Valentine I gave her is dead, I give her my negro girl Jean. Son: Charles, to allow all my daughters to live with him as long as single and my sister Myshall as long as she lives. Son: Joseph, negro girl Rebecca. Wit: George Goldie, John Goldsmith. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Will of Eleanor Turner, SMC, 8/20/1781-9/16/1781. Daughter: Sarah negroes named Peter and Lucy. Daughter: Eleanor, a negro named Guy; a negro girl named Lucy and her son, Jerry; and a horse which came of the mare named Punkin. Daughters: Sarah and Eleanor, the remainder of my estate equally divided. Exec.: None specified. Witnesses: George Goldie, Justinian Jordan. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1776-1791 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). Now to prove it! 1. [MDSTMARY] Welsh naming practice in Maryland records?
    2. Daniel B. Troublefield
    3. Hello List, General question: Is the Welsh custom of naming sons after their fathers, the reason for all the St. Mary's records of names as "John Edwards (of John)", Joseph Edwards (of Ignatius), Joseph (of Benjamin), etc.? The Joseph Edwards' ancestry was Welsh, from what I've read. In Welsh, John (of John) would be more like "Ieuan ap Ieuan" or something like that, I think, where "ap" means "son of" in Cymric. Dan

    3. Hi Linda, I am a 3rd great grandson to William O'Bryan and Elizabeth Kincheloe of Ky. My understanding is that: 1. John Bryone married Catherine ? 2. William Bryan married Elizabeth Douglass 3. John O'Bryan (D.1783) married Mary ? 4. Charles O'Brian (D.1852) married Susanna French (Charles and William both went to Hardin County, KY and many generations are buried at St. Clare cemetery.) 5. John Brian married 1st Mary Huff, 2nd Susanna French's niece, Ann Mariah French 6. John Hilary O'Brian married Emma O'Rourke (This is my 2d great grandparents) 1. John Bryone married Catherine ? 2. Peter Brian married Jane Gardiner 3. William O'Bryan married 1st ?, 2nd ElIzabeth Kincheloe (This is my 3rd great grandparents) This William had a brother, Lewis O'Bryan. 3. Hi Peter, At one point I did have her maiden name as Langworth, but I'm really not so sure. You could assume she was the sister of James Langworth based on the will of William Johnson. Will of William Johnson, St. Wynefrid's, SMC, 6/7/1656--no probate date. To: Wife, Emma and daughter, Elizabeth Johnson entire estate if they or either of them arrive in England; if not the following division of property to be made: Nephew, William Langworth, son of brother James Langworth, 500 ac. "St. Winifred's"; RCC; Emma Shanks, dau. of John Shanks of St. Clement's Bay; niece, Mrs. Mary Langworth; sisters Agatha Langworth, Elizabeth Price, Elizabeth Morris, and mother Mrs. Elizabeth Morris, personal estate. Exec: Brother, James Langworth. Wit: Luke Gardiner, Robert Cole, William Thompson. But notice in her deposition below she too refers to her "brother-in-law, James Langworth." I bet Linda knows! I have her as Emma Langworth, daughter of James Langworth and ?. She is my 8g's grandmother. My data is based on the following: "Gave deposition in 1661 that she was 35 yeas old.Widow of William Johnson(1st) and Thomas Turner (2nd). After the death of Thomas she had the Turner property re-surveyed as 550 acres of “St. Thomas”, 500 acres of “St. Barbara’s”, and 200 acres of “little St. Thomas”. John Bapthish Carberry II was apparantly the guardian of this paroberties (sic) for the Turner children and by 1715 all of this land was in the possession of the grandson, Thomas Turner(3). Of “St. Winifred’s”. Transported into Province in 1642 by Francis White (Patents 1:24). Purchased 500 acre tract of “St. Winifred” from Thomas Gerard. Ex., brother James Langworth. Test: Luke Gardner, Robt. Cole, Wm. Thompson. 1. 129. Editors: William Johnson immigrated in 1651 and was deceased by 1658 according to Land Records, Liber Q, Folio 19, which includes the information that Aemilia Johnson was the sister-in-law of James Langworth and by 1658, the relict of William Johnson (Gibb Amelia (Emma) did come to Maryland where she married 2nd Thomas Turner and 3rd William Roswell. See both James Langworth's and Thomas Turner's wills below.
