    3. Mike, What's so crazy about this is that Raphael Haywood named no wife in his will. If he was married to Ann, I'd have to believe she died before him but yet the administration accounts are dated after his. There was plenty enough litigation regarding Raphael's estate and you'd think if he'd been married, that would have been mentioned. The property was "Fawskirk" that Raphael devised to Rev. Robert Scott (Rector of All Faith). It was later in the possession of Rev. John Urquhart, also a Rector at All Faith. His wife was Ann Briscoe (daughter of Philip Briscoe and Susanna Swann) who married second, Samuel Wood. I don't think this record you cited below necessarily means there were two men named Joseph Edwards. Benjamin of Joseph (d. 1746): 1762: Tax lists of SMC show that Mary, widow of Joseph Edwards, Sr., paid taxes on 110 ac. "Diamond's Venture" through 1761. On the 4/10/1762 list, the tax was paid by Benjamin Edwards, co-heir with his brother Joseph Edwards, Jr. to this tract of land. His brother Joseph paid his tax on two other tracts he owned in 1761 and does not appear in the lists after that year. Joseph Edwards, his wife, Maryan and their children may have arrived in NC as early as 1765. According to a deed registered in Edgecomb Co., NC a Joseph Edwards bought 100 ac. in that year. I am half affraid even to get into these guys because every time I do I seem to get it mixed up. But here goes.... I guess I will start with Generation 1. Ann Price married Joseph Edwards bef. 6 Sep 1699 and aft. 1698 John Roberts 19-1/2B.117 A SM #2844 Sep 6 1699 Received from: Francis Grayham [Grayson], Christopher Williamson. Payments to: Mr. Robert Mason, James Wood, Mr. Jacob Moreland, James Latch, John Gellum [Gillam], John Duckett, Administrators Joseph Edwards. The son, Joseph Edwards (d. 1746), I show his birth date prior to 1697 based on the probate of John Davis (d. 1718) whoes estate paid 2 Joseph Edwards. Joseph Edwards the father was deceased prior to this distribution as his Inventory was taken in April 1718. So, is this the son? John Davis 1,54 A SM £88.6.5 £19.8.10 Jun 3 1718 Payments to: Thomas Trueman Greenfield, William Fenwick, Edward Millum, John Hayes, John Davis, John Barniby, Thomas Trueman, Peter Oneal, James Wood & Joseph Edwards, William Biggs, William Leack, Joseph Edwards, Capt. Thomas Trueman Greenfield, Executrix: Anne Wood, wife of Samuell Wood. The son, John Edwards (d. 1744), well here is somehing that confuses me. Look at Patent 523: A Special Warrant was issued to John Price to Resurvey Prices Lot on 2 May 1682 for John Price of Calvert County. The land consisted of 164 A next to Trent Creek aand the Cabin Branch on the west sid of the Putuxent, The Survey was completed on 18 Jul 1682. Reference Land Records, Libor 21 folio 414. John Price died before the Patent was issued. In his will he bequeathed Prices Lot to his daughter Ann Roberts who intemarried with Joseph Edwards after the death of her husband John Roberts. Joseph and Ann Edwards died Intestate and Prices Lot then descended to thier son John Edwards. {This makes John the oldest living male at that time.} John died Intestate and his rights to the land decended to his Eldest Son, Joseph Edwards. On 20 May 1769, Joseph Edwards sold Prices Lot to John Horrell. Reference Patent 523 issued to John Horrell, 30 Aug 1771. (my transcription) http://plato.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1500/s1529/cfm/dsp_unit.cfm ?county=sm&qualifier=S&series=1205&unit=538 If John was the oldest son of Joseph (d. 1718) and his other son was born bef. 1697, then would John not be born before 1696? Which would mean that neither were children of Ann Price. So, before I really confuse everyone, I need to ask....... Stourton Edwards and Benjamin Edwards that are shown as children of Joseph (d. 1718), is it possible that they are really children of Joseph (d. 1746)? 3. Thank you, Linda! This makes several relationships much clearer. Best regards, Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Reno" <lindareno@comcast.net> To: <mdstmary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 9:41 AM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Stourton Edwards witness to 1725 will of WilliamHulse I placed Elizabeth, wife of Meverell Locke, as a daughter of Joseph Edwards because of this record: 4/14/1767: Admin. accts. of Stourton Edwards name as his NOK, Elizabeth Locke. I placed Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Burroughs, as a daughter of Joseph Edwards because of this record: Admin. accts. of Joseph Burroughs 10/3/1765; sureties were Jonathan Edwards and Stourton Edwards; Admx., Mrs. Elizabeth Burroughs (Skinner). I could be wrong on one or both. I don't know how Jonathan Edwards (who administered on the estate of Joseph Burroughs) was related to Elizabeth Edwards but he was related to Joseph Burroughs (son of Richard Burroughs). Richard Burroughs was the sister of Sarah Burroughs who married John Cartwright. Sarah Burroughs and John Cartwright had a daughter named Elizabeth Cartwright who married John Edwards and they were the parents of this Jonathan Edwards. (See John Edwards #2 below). So, who was this John Edwards and how does he fit? Actually I have two of them that I'll post information on below. The reason I assumed that Stourton, son of Joseph, died between 1769-1770 was based on this record: >From Pete Himmelheber, 4/20/2012: Notes for STOURTON (OF JOSEPH) EDWARDS: 03 May 1746:Named executor and devised Tauton Dean in his father's will {WB:TA01:488} 1753-1767: Listed as "Junior" taxed for Tauton Dean, 164-acres {Debt Books} 1768-1769: Taxed for Tauton Dean, 164-acres 1770-1774: His brother Josias Edwards taxed for Taunton Dean, 164-acres No, I don't think Barbara (Hazel) Edwards was a bigamist. Her husband John died by 1743/1744. Until she and Stourton Edwards were "called on the carpet" by church officials in 1758, they hadn't been married. You've already cited the record below. Ignatius Edwards is identified as the son of John and Barbara in this record: 4 Oct 1736: Mill Manor lease of Tarltons Blind, 44-acres (lot 17). Leased for life of "John Joy and his wife Mary" and "Ignatius Edwards son of John Edwards and his wife Barbara" {Unpatented Certificate:448. MSA S1228-451}. Since we don't have enough confusion, let me throw out the information on the three men named John Edwards whom I don't have placed and one that's in question. And, for good measure, I'll throw in a Thomas Edwards. John Edwards #1 whose records collide with Thomas Edwards: Fresco: Thomas Smith m. bef. 1707 Ann Abington, wd. of Andrew Abington of St. Richard Manor, Harvey Hundred whose will prov. 1691. Linda Reno -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Daniel B. Troublefield Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2013 12:03 PM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Stourton Edwards witness to 1725 will of WilliamHulse Thanks, Linda, for your response, especially as to the land records not being part of the probate process in St. Mary's (as they were, at least in part, in North and South Carolina.) I do appreciate the help in untangling the multiple persons of the same name in this confusing Edwards family. I realize that any family tree setting up the kinships of the various persons in this family has to be somewhat tentative as there is so little direct proof of the exact relationships in many instances. I thank you for clearing up the matter of the first Stourton Edwards for me. That was really bothering me more than any other issue. Even more than "losing" the Suit and Dent ancestry of my Stourton Edwards who was born in 1767 to Joseph Edwards III and Maryan. I do have a few further questions based on the descendants list below: Under Joseph, Jr., died 1746: I understand that Joseph did not name any daughters in his will of which I have a recorded copy. Usually I would take that, in the absence of a statement that certain of his children had already received their portions, that Joseph Jr. had no daughters or sons other than those named in his will. Also, although it was not unheard of for a couple to give the same given name to more than one child, usually it was when the elder child of the name had already died. Not the case here with two daughters named Elizabeth who survived and married. Also, under Joseph Jr., died 1746: Son, Stourton, might he not have lived till 1788? A Stourton Edwards and a Jonathan Edwards were administrators of Elizabeth Burroughs estate in 1771 and 1788. I don't know about the Jonathan, but surely the Stourton would be this Stourton, son of Joseph Jr., if Elizabeth Burroughs were Joseph Jr.'s daughter? Otherwise, who would Stourton, co-administrator, be? Tom Jennings wrote 3 Apr 2000: "Inventory of Elizabeth Burroughs 3/9/1770 kin as: John Edwards of John and Elizabeth Edwards execs. Jonathan & Stourton Edwards Distributions of Elizabeth Burroughs by Jonathan & Stourton Edwards 2/1771. Bal. & Distributions of Elizabeth Burroughs by Jonathan & Stourton Edwards, admrs. 11/29/1788 Children equally: Joseph, Normand & Elizabeth Burroughs" Backing up to Joseph Sr., died 1718: and his son John Edwards died 1743/44 married to Barbara Hazel: As this same Barbara was the wife of Stourton Edwards, John's brother, this would surely be a case of bigamy on Barbara's part. Would that be the reason for the St. Andrews Parish Church vestry record that Stourton and Barbara were unlawfully cohabiting in 1758? Or rather instead, should "Unknown Female Unknown Surname" be substituted as the wife of John Edwards died 1743/44? St. Andrew's Vestry Minutes 20 June 1758: "Ordered that Stourton Edwards and Barbara Edwards be summoned to appear at a vestry to be held the Second Tuesday in July next, to answer unto the said Vestry for unlawful Cohabiting together." Vestry Minutes 11 July 1758: "This day Stourton Edwards appeared before this presence vestry to answer the charge of unlawful Cohabitation with Barbara Edwards and the said Vestry being disatisfied with his Defence gave an Admonition according to Stourton Edwards informed the Vestry that Barbara Edwards could not attend being indeposed." Thank you for your placement of an Ignatius Edwards in this family. Had been wondering about him, too, since census records show that there was a Stourton Edwards (of Ignatius) either in 1790. 3. John Davis, whose records you cite below, is my ancestor. His wife was Ann Briscoe (daughter of Philip Briscoe and Susanna Swann) who married second, Samuel Wood. I don't think this record you cited below necessarily means there were two men named Joseph Edwards. If you notice, a payment was made to James Wood & Joseph Edwards (probably in business together) and then to Joseph Edwards separately. John Davis 1,54 A SM £88.6.5 £19.8.10 Jun 3 1718 Payments to: Thomas Trueman Greenfield, William Fenwick, Edward Millum, John Hayes, John Davis, John Barniby, Thomas Trueman, Peter Oneal, James Wood & Joseph Edwards, William Biggs, William Leack, Joseph Edwards, Capt. Thomas Trueman Greenfield, Executrix: Anne Wood, wife of Samuell Wood. I think the Benjamin Edwards are placed correctly. The one who died in 1761 (son of Joseph, d. 1718). 2/28/1761: Admin. accts. of Benjamin Edwards, SMC. Next of kin: Stourten and Robert Edwards (his brothers). Exec: Benjamin Edwards (his son). 9/6/1763: Admin. accts. of Benjamin Edwards, SMC. Received from: Thomas Dent, Peter Moran, John Estep, Thomas Nichols, Benjamin Wood, Jr., John Reeder. Payments to: Samuel Hanson paid to Smith Middleton, Robert Hammett, Normand Bruce for Nathaniel Truman Greenfield, Samuel Swann, Benjamin Wood. Admin.: Benjamin Edwards, Jr. (Admin. accts. of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers, 46-51, 1760-1764 by V. L. Skinner, Jr.). NOTE: This record is not on CD #206. (More Marylanders to Carolina, Peden). Deed to Benjamin Edwards from George Locke for "Part of the Plains of Jericho", 3/23/1792; with wife (unnamed), to his brother Joseph "Part of Good Penny Worth with Addition", "Part of Fair Fields", "Part of Diamond's Venture" and "Part of Edwards' Back", 105 ac., 1/9/1793 (Chr. of SM). 1746)? 3. I placed Elizabeth, wife of Meverell Locke, as a daughter of Joseph Edwards because of this record: 4/14/1767: Admin. accts. of Stourton Edwards name as his NOK, Elizabeth Locke. 1691. Had been wondering about him, too, since census records show that there was a Stourton Edwards (of Ignatius) either in 1790. 3. Randy, Thanks very much for posting the information about John Davis's estate and distributions in 1718. That is interesting and adds to the total story of these early Joseph Edwards. Otherwise, I can only respond to part of your post - the part related to "Price's Lott". My hope is that I am reading your post correctly. If not, my apologies. Randy wrote 15 Jan 2013: "John Price died before the Patent was issued. In his will he bequeathed Prices Lot to his daughter Ann Roberts who intemarried with Joseph Edwards after the death of her husband John Roberts. Joseph and Ann Edwards died Intestate and Prices Lot then descended to their son John Edwards. {This makes John the oldest living male at that time.} John died Intestate and his rights to the land descended to his Eldest Son, Joseph Edwards. On 20 May 1769, Joseph Edwards sold Prices Lot to John Horrell. Reference Patent 523 issued to John Horrell, 30 Aug 1771. (my transcription)" There is no direct statement in the chain of title document that John Edwards, son of Ann Price and Joseph Edwards, was Joseph's eldest son, but it implies that he was either Ann's eldest son or her only son, because he was her heir at law and Joseph's for "Price's Lott." Joseph Edwards died 1718 may have had another wife who gave him sons other than John: namely Stourton, Joseph, Benjamin, and Robert. Only John Edwards' son Joseph Edwards is described as "eldest son" of John. It appears that the chain of title to "Price's Lott" is from John Price to his daughter Ann Price Roberts, widowed by John Roberts who died in 1699. Then Ann married Joseph Edwards in 1699 or 1700 and together they had a son John Edwards (born after their marriage in 1699 or 1700) to whom "Price's Lott" passed after Joseph and Ann Edwards died intestate (Joseph in 1718 and Ann in 17??). John Edwards then died intestate in 1743/44 and John's "eldest son and heir at law" Joseph Edwards inherited "Price's Lott" and later sold it in 1769 to John Horrell. So the Joseph Edwards who inherited "Price's Lott" and sold it was not the Joseph Edwards (Jr.) who died testate in 1746, but rather Joseph 1769 was the nephew of Joseph who died in 1746. The weak link in all of the above is that the chain of title does not specify when John Edwards died (whether in 1744 or otherwise except that it was before his son Joseph sold "Price's Lott" in 1769). Nor does it mention John's wife. -------------------- >From Linda Reno on 2-2-2000 "Joseph Edwards (died 1718) married Ann (Price), the widow of John Roberts, sometime between 1698 and 1700. On 7/1/1700 Joseph Edwards was listed as admin of John Roberts estate. Ann (Price) Roberts was the daughter of John Price (died 1698) and Joan (?) Price. From: mike marshall <mrmarsha2004@yahoo.com> Subject: [MDSTMARY] John Price d1698 St. Mary's County Md Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2012 "John Price willed (1698) Prices lot to his daughter Anne Roberts who intermarried to Joseph Edwards. Anne had a son John Edwards. upon the death of Joseph and Anne, John Edwards entered and possessed the afsd land and died intestate where the land descended to his eldest son Joseph Edwards and heir at law. Joseph for valuable consideration 2 Feb1769 sold his rights to John Horrell." ----------------- I read the document relating to "Price's Lott" ownership chain and it appears to me that Mike summarized it well. Best regards, Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: "C Greenwell" <cgreenwell01@gmail.com> To: <mdstmary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2013 1:02 PM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Stourton Edwards witness to 1725 will of WilliamHulse Hi Linda and List, Lots of questions here. (my transcription) http://plato.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1500/s1529/cfm/dsp_unit.cfm?county=sm&qualifier=S&series=1205&unit=538 If John was the oldest son of Joseph (d. 1746)? 3. Hi Linda and List, Lots of questions here. (my transcription) http://plato.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1500/s1529/cfm/dsp_unit.cfm?county=sm&qualifier=S&series=1205&unit=538 If John was the oldest son of Joseph (d. 1746)? 3. Thanks, Linda, for your response, especially as to the land records not being part of the probate process in St. Had been wondering about him, too, since census records show that there was a Stourton Edwards (of Ignatius) either in 1790. 3. Dan, According to my files the first Stourton Edwards was the son of Joseph Edwards (d. 1718). Joseph Edwards, Jr. (d. 1766), brother of Stourton, also had a son named Stourton who was often referred to in the records as Stourton, Jr. to avoid confusion with his uncle. As you'll see below, the birth dates are guesstimates for the most part. Land records weren't a part of the probate process, but they're a useful tool in trying to figure out who belongs to who, where they lived, etc. The last definite record I can point to is Stourton Edwards owning 190 acres of "St. Thomas" in 1755. His will does not refer to his property by name. Below is how I have the first couple of generations of this family lined up. Additions, corrections appreciated. Would such an early birth be consistent with him being the son of Joseph Edwards who died in 1746? I don't know. Just asking. Is there a deposition that gives the age for Stourton who died in 1766? Did "St. Thomas" (land received under the will of Robert Stourton) pass after 1766 to the heirs of Stourton Edwards who died in 1766? My only luck has been with finding recorded wills on FamilySearch. My primary questions are: (1) was Stourton Edwards who died in 1766 old enough in 1725 to witness the Hulse will?
