    3. Linda, I sent a reply yesterday that is lost somewhere on one of those clouds. I read your Evans theory but don't find enough evidence to make changes or to prove either of the two theories. There is no evidence that Enoch Abell's wife was not a Booth unless Booth was an earlier line. How do we explain generations of John Booth Abells and Enoch Booth Abells. There must be a reason. 1/21/1735: Admin. accts. of David Evans, SMC. Distribution to: widow, 1/3. Residue to (5 children*): Hugh, John, Susanna,Judith, and Grace Evans.* Judith did not name, as far as I know, any of her children: David Grace, Hugh ..John & Susanna were the Abell line names. Is it possible Booth name came from somewhere in the Evans' line? 3. Okay, UGGG. So if the USHER deed actually says Mary wife of John Abell...we may be looking at typos or three marriages. I know everyone discounts this, citing how well versed the clerks were but I have found a number of transcript discrepancies when you compare the Archives wills with same existing ones from St. Mary's of the same period. My assumption is that most of the mistakes were likely NOT the St. Mary's ones because they would have had more intimate knowledge of the families involved? This will be my ultimate goal at Maryland Archives this year- to SEE that USHER deed. Do I have the right John Abell with will 1746 and Frances____ as exec?Any takers for who this Frances was?I think that was still back and forth, right? < , |/ < ' /|   Kat Mills   --- On Wed, 2/13/13, John Dobricky <john.dobricky@gmail.com> wrote: From: John Dobricky <john.dobricky@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Fisher or Usher and John Abell To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, February 13, 2013, 2:42 PM OK.....I'm sure you all have already investigated this but......... 1) Could there have been two contemporaneous men named "John Abell" living in Maryland with a wife named "Mary"?  This happens all the time.  We have no proof that the John and Mary (Usher?) Abell were the same people as the John and Mary (Fisher?) Abell.  Kent County, MD, and SMC are a long way apart. 2) To the best of my knowledge, there are no "Thomas Abell"s in the next couple of generations of descendants of the "John Abell" who was married to Mary (Fisher?Usher?) and who lived in SMC.  This would have been unusual.  The John Abell in SMC did have a son named "Edward," however--probably named for Edward Fisher. 3) Of course, there is also the intriguing similarity between the surnames "Fisher" and "Usher"--they would be easy to confuse when reading records written in early 18th century handwriting. Just a few thoughts.  Feedback welcome.  John Dobricky On Wed, Feb 13, 2013 at 3:29 PM, Thomas Jennings <consettct@gmail.com> wrote: > Linda > > I think he may have wed both. > > Tom > > On Wed, Feb 13, 2013 at 3:24 PM, Linda Reno <lindareno@comcast.net> wrote: > >> Back to this argument.  Tom Jennings believes she was Mary Usher.  I say >> she >> was Mary Fisher. >> >> My note to the list, 1/2004: >> >> There are those who claim that Mary Usher, daughter of Thomas Usher, was >> the >> wife of John Abell based on a land record which named Mary, wife of John >> Abell, in 1715.  This won't work as Mary was named as a minor in her >> father's will in 1714.  She was not old enough to have married John Abell >> and have had 3 children by 1715.  The wife of John Abell of SMC was ____ >> FISHER, daughter of Edward Fisher. >> >> PATENTS E.I.#1 f363-365 1734  Kent Co., Md. 3. It may be helpful I I post this sources, Marcia. Here's a transcription that existed possibly as early as the 1930's. My grandfather corresponded with this woman. I do not know who inherited the bible and never saw it myself, but believe it existed.  I can not verify the accuracy of this transcript either. I haven't had time to check it all, but have verified some of it with early Holy Name of Mary Baptismal records. My family lines are Abell, Hamilton and Mills. The Spaldings and Mattinglys are well-documented lines, their descendants settling in Nelson/Washington/Marion counties of KY, pioneers of the Maryland League. Benedict Joseph SPALDING JR (1746-1815 KY) married Alethaire (Alethea) ABELL (1753-1821 KY), the daughter of Samuel Abell (c1719-1777 MD) and Eleanor Bryan (c1720-aft 1777 MD, presumed daughter of William Bryan). This couple has been used numerous times for DAR/SAR applications. They are my 4th great-grandparents. Benedict Joseph SPALDING SR (c1716-1768 MD) married Elizabeth MATTINGLY bef. 1746. She was daughter of Thomas Mattingly III (c1690-1774 MD) and Ruth Cole (c1698-bef 1774). (5th great-grandparents) Thomas Mattingly I (c1623-1664 MD) was the immigrant from England. Benedict Joseph Spalding was the grand-son of Thomas Spalding (c1640-c1713 MD) , immigrant from England. Both in St. Mary's County MD area. Benedict J. Spalding JR and Alethaire had a son, Benedict J. III, nicknamed "Ben Slick". Born Jun 1783-died Feb 1870 in Marion County KY. He married three times: Mary "Nancy" Hamilton; Elizabeth Elder; and Eliza McElroy. I have no children listed. There are many descendants of this couple, Benedict Joseph Spalding JR and Alethaire Abell, in KY, including: Hamilton, Simms, Abell, Lancaster, Wathen, Beaven, on and on. Much has been documented, but data from records and personal family trees does get tangled sometimes. And, the  additional name "Joseph" is not always adopted, or recorded consistently, through the lines of descent. Hope this helps. 3. List, I need to weigh in on this one. Again, let's correct these names and dates, if needed. I would appreciate any help you can give me in getting the Spaldings straight. Louis and Susanna Buckman had enough children of their own. If I recall correctly from a prior discussion, this could affect the way some relationships are viewed within the Abell, Spalding, Luckett, Rhodes, Fenwick, McElroy and Hamilton families and probably some others. 1. [MDSTMARY] Booth vs Evans
    2. Thomas Jennings
    3. Linda I read your Evans theory but don't find enough evidence to make changes or to prove either of the two theories. There is no evidence that Enoch Abell's wife was not a Booth unless Booth was an earlier line. We have generattions. of John Booth Abells and Enoch Booth Abells. I would think that would be a better indication of a Booth ancestry than David Evans living in 3NR area nor do I see no David, Hugh, Graces, Judith'd siblings in the name of Abell children. If memory serves me, I do believe that was the era when John Abell (d.1746) had many in his line become or marry Catholics. 1/21/1735: Admin. accts. of David Evans, SMC. 3. I recently sent that message out the William Thomas d 1685 left land to daughter Sarah and an unborn child. Assuming the way my John Branson got some of this land was by marriage (his wife was Sarah) the unborn child must have married Edward Field. John and Thomas Spalding bought 100 acres of this land (Bachelor's Rest) from John Spalding's father in law - Edward Field. Since Benedict Spalding was James' Executor and William Thomas witnessed his will perhaps Benedict came from this lineage. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Enoch ABELL and wife Judith
    2. Linda Reno, this came from you some time ago. I agree with it. it fits the pattern of what we are discussing. I agree Enoch Abell married Judith Evans not Judith BOOTH. While we're on the subject.... Does anyone have any proof that Judith, wife of Enoch Abell was actually Judith Booth? I believe she is presumed to be because one of her sons was named John Booth Abell. I think she was actually Judith Evans, daughter of David Evans, Jr. and his wife, Eleanor (who m. second, Thomas Fish). Eleanor was somehow related to the family of John Gibbons and his wife, Martha. 1/21/1735: Admin. accts. of David Evans, SMC. Sureties: Henry Tucker, John Gibbons. Received from: Joseph Stone, James Watts, John Patchall. Payments to: Capt. John Hicks, Philip Clarke, John Thompson, George Plater, Esq. Distribution to: widow, 1/3. Residue to (5 children): Hugh, John, Susanna, Judith, and Grace Evans. Admx: Eleanor Fish, wife of Thomas Fish. Admin. accts. of Thomas Fish, 5/31/1753 by Eleanor Fish, Admx.; sureties were Cuthbert Abell and Nathaniel Hickman; 1/3 to widow; Children: Thomas Fish, of full age; Robert Fish, about 15; William, 15; James, about 12; and Joseph, age 9 (Moxey). David Evans, Jr. was the son of David Evans, Sr. who outlived his son. Will of David Evans, SMC, 7/16/1734-3/31/1735. Grandchildren: Isabella Hebb, David Hebb, and Joseph Hebb, personalty. Daughter: Susanna, wife of Henry Tucker, water mill; dwelling plantation to Susanna and the heirs of her body and of her husband, Henry Tucker, her eldest son Benjamin Tucker excepted. Residue of estate to be divided between grandchildren, the children of Henry and Susanna Tucker and of David Evans and his wife, Eleanor. Exec: Henry Tucker, carpenter. Wit: John Heages, John Rigby, John Patshall. Last year, when I first started thinking about this, I wrote to Pete Himmelheber and asked him if these families lived anywhere near each other. I asked him if Enoch Abell, David Evans, Jr. and Thomas Fish lived in the same area in the 1720's through the 1760's. 3. Does anyone have any additional information on Elfred Drury m. John Raley (d. 1834) on 6/13/1807? I initially had her birth as 1770 but this would make her 37 at the time of her marriage and according to Linda Reno (see below) her last child with John Raley was not born until 1816. This seems unlikely but not impossible. ******************************** >From John Dobricky post of 1/29/2013 <john dobricky@gmail.com> In terms of John Raley (according to Linda Reno, b. circa 1755), here is all I have on his family: John Raley (born, according to Linda Reno, circa 1755--however, I think he was born more like 1765-70--and d. 1834 in SMC--son of John Raley "of John" (b. 1735 in SMC) and Henrietta (probably Greenwell)) marreid (1) __________ and they had, at least, the following children: 1) Ann ("Nancy") Raley (b. 1795-1800 and d. 1844 in SMC--she married (ML 7/28/1821 in SMC) James Goldsborough (d. 1839 in SMC)); 2) John Raley (b. 1795-1800 and d. 1832 in SMC); 3) Mary Raley (b. 1800 and d. after 1826 in SMC--she married (ML 1/6/1826 in SMC) Richard Stone (d. 1826-32 in SMC)). After the death of ___________, John Raley (I believe, b. circa 1765-70 and d. 1834 in SMC) married (2--ML 6/13/1807 in SMC) Elefred Drury and they had, at least, the following children: 4) Aloysia ("Ally") Raley (b. 1808-10 in SMC); 5) Monica Raley (b. 1808-10 in SMC); 6) Obediah Raley (b. 1808-10 in SMC and d. after 1831--there is an Obediah Raley listed as living in Dakota County, Minnesota, in 1870--Obediah Nelson (son of Seneca Nelson and Eleanor Tippett) was, apparently, also living in Dakota County, Minnesota, in 1870); 7) Ann Caroline Raley (b. 1810 and d. after 1870 in SMC--she married (ML 11/20/1830 in SMC) George W. Latham (b. 1799 and d. bet. 1860 and 1870 in SMC)); 8) George Francis Raley (b. 1810 in SMC); 9) Thomas Raley (b. 1815 and d. bef. 1860 in SMC); 10) "Elpha" (probably Elefred) Isabella Raley (b. 1816 and d. bet. 1858 and 1860 in SMC--she married (ML 1/14/1842 in SMC) Edmund Barton Joy (b. 1792 and d. bet. 1860 and 1864 in SMC)). ********************************** 1.) I'm wondering if at least some of the children ascribed to her before 1808 were actually by his first unknown wife? 2.) Could it be possible that she was born later than 1770, perhaps s much as 10 yeas later? If we had a better handle on when she was born there would be a better chance of identifying her parents. This would be the 1720's through the 1760's.  Got any magic in those files? I asked him if Enoch Abell, David Evans, Jr. and Thomas Fish lived in the same area in the 1720's through the 1760's. Linda Reno Mary CLARKE who married Cuthbert ABELL had a brother Phillip CLARKE. **I have no record of Philip Clarke, brother of Mary, after 1733.  The Philip Clarke listed above could be Philip, Jr., son of Philip and Hannah Mackall who married Catherine Wilson (she ties back into the Wilkinsons) or Philip III, son of Philip, Jr. **The wife of Nathaniel Hickman was Mary Gibbons, sister of Eleanor Gibbons discussed above.  Notice that Eleanor is called Eleanor Dement in the administrative accounts of her brother Major Gibbons in 1765 and Thomas Dement was the administrator. 8/2/1746:  Admin. accts. of Martha Gibbons, SMC.  Sureties: John Wiseman, John Woodward.  Payments to (among others): Major Gibbons (son of John Gibbons, due from Henry Tucker).  Legal representatives: John Gibbons, Stephen Gibbons, Henry Gibbons, Mager Gibbons, Nathaniel Hickman, William Daves, Eleanor Gibbons, Priscilla Gibbons.  Adm: John Gibbons. 3/5/1765: Admin. accts. of Major Gibbons, SMC.  Appraisers: George Aisquith, Joseph Hopewell.  Creditors: John Gibbins, Eleanor Dement.  Adm: Thomas Dement.
