Charles Howard, most likely her son with James Howard, may have been born between 7 July 1779 and 1 June 1780 based on census and tax records for Charles Howard. If she was married about a year before his birth, and was at least 15 years old at the time she would be born before 1763. Hi all, In fairness to Sister Donnelly, in her "Colonial Settlers St. Clements Bay", for both the Knott and Cole families she clearly does not have Rebecca Knott/Cole as the daughter of Benjamin Gill. So we have to look elsewhere for that error. But does anyone know who Rebecca's parents really were? I originally had her as a Sheppey but I don't know where that came from. Help, anyone! Also I've seen her first husband as John and Francis Knott, Which is right? Cheers, Pete On 2/15/13 8:58 AM, John Dobricky wrote: > Hello. As always, thanks for the information. Oops, Sorry, but my last post was in error. It should read as follows: I recently found an unsourced placement of an Elizabeth Cissell (b. abt. 1750) as the Elizabeth who was the wife of John Drury (s/o Peter Drury & Jane Bailey) who married before 1766 when their son John Drury was christened. Some trees list John (the father) as John Baptist Drury though Tim O'Rourke in CFSM lists him as John. Elizabeth must have died with the birth of their son as John christens his second child with a new wife in January of 1768. Can anyone identify this Elizabeth, or alternately prove who John's wife Elizabeth really was? Thanks for any help with this. Don Drury
Dear list, I recently found an unsourced placement of an Elizabeth Cissell (b. abt. 1750) as the Elizabeth who was the wife of Richard Drury (s/o Peter Drury & Jane Bailey) who married before 1771 when their son Peter Drury was christened. Can anyone identify this Elizabeth, or alternately prove who Richard's wife Elizabeth really was? Thanks for any help with this. Don Drury
i. NANCY ANN9 SPALDING, b. February 08, 1771, St. Mary's County, Maryland; d. January 26, 1863, Marion County, Kentucky; m. UNKNOWN HAMILTON. She married Clement HAMILTON son of Leonard HAMILTON and Nancy McAtee Washington Co Ky Wills 1792-1853, (Sanders) Leonard Hamilton - Will - W: 28 Aug 1819, P: 13 Sep 1819 Leg: Daughters: Elizabeth Lucket, Harriet Thurman, Ann Bloom, Martha Janes, (James?) daughter Stacy's heirs Sons: Clement, Leonard and Samuel Ex: Sons, Leonard & Samuel Wit: Aaron Spalding, William McAfee (sic) Signed: Leonard Hamilton Hamilton, Leonard http://www.kv.k12.in.us/rdmhome/mcatee/index.html LEONARD HAMILTON and his wife, Nancy McAtee, were founders of one of the early Hamilton families of Washington County, KY With their children, several grown or nearly so, a few relatives and some neighbors, they left Charles Co., MD for Kentucky in the late spring of 1790. Leonard, his family, and many of the others settled on the Rolling Fork; he was reported as a taxable with 600 acres in 1792. When Leonard, a "middling planter," left his Charles County home in the Old Port Tobacco area of Maryland he had over 200 well worn acres, but like most of those who joined this exodus to Kentucky, he hoped to improve the social and economic circumstances of his family, which included more and better land. Leonard, born in the mid or late 1740's, probably at "Spy Park" the old Hamilton home place, was the oldest son of Patrick Hamilton, one of the children of Alexander and Elizabeth. Through his mother, Ann Green, Leonard was descended from Thomas Greene, who arrived on the Ark and Dove and became a prominent official and, for a time, governor of Lord Baltimore's palatinate. (See also "Thomas Hamilton" for more family background). At the time he died in 1819, nine of his 11 children, four sons and five of his seven daughters, were still living and mentioned in his will. Of his four sons Clement, the oldest, married Ann ("Nancy") SPALDING, had a large family and became a prominent farmer in Washington (later Marion) County. Leonard's second oldest son, George A. Hamilton, married Claire Fenwick, joined his father in law, Joseph Fenwick, in 1797 in his colonizing venture in the St. Genevieve District of Upper Louisiana (then under Spanish control, later Perry County). He became a large landowner on Brazeau Creek at its confluence with the Mississippi across from the old French settlement at Kaskaskia. Three of George's five children became noteworthy in the annals of the Catholic Church: George Alexander Hamilton (Jr.) as a prominent priest of the diocese of Boston: his two daughters as pioneering nuns with the Ladies of the Sacred Heart. Two of George's three sons married and had children. The third son of Leonard Hamilton was Leonard, Jr. who married a Beaven. When he, along with Joseph Ford, died in the disaster of the steamboat Brandywine on April 9, 1832, in the Mississippi above Memphis, he was returning from a business trip to New Orleans. His death orphaned eight children, four sons and four daughters. One of his sons was the other of two well known priests named George Alexander Hamilton (they were first cousins) who is buried in the crypt under the high alter in St Mary's Cathedral in Lafayette, IN. Samuel, the fourth son, of Leonard Hamilton, Sr., who married Deborah Thomas, died a few years after his father. He left two or three children, one daughter and one or two sons. Samuel's progeny are found first in the records of Washington County and later in those of Nelson County. The seven daughters of Leonard Hamilton, Sr., with the names of their husbands and dates of marriage are as follows: Elizabeth, married first in 1791 to Thomas McAtee and secondly in 1799 to Henry Luckett; Martha married in 1796 to William James; Anastasia ("Stacy") married in 1797 to Ignatius HAGAN; Henrietta married in 1801 to Richard SPALDING (as his first wife); Harriett married in 1802 to Livingston J. Thurman; Mary married in 1805 to Benedict J. SPALDING; Ann ("Nancy") married first in 1806 to Jeremiah K. Knott (killed by retreating British while on guard duty after the Battle of New Orleans), secondly married Charles Bland in 1817. The two daughters of Leonard who married Spaldings were mothers of children who became prominent as nuns, priests and prelates in the Catholic church. Henrietta was the mother of Martin J. SPALDING, notable as the Archbishop of Baltimore. There are numerous progeny "of Leonard" in both patrilineal and matrilineal lines that today has spread far beyond the borders of old Washington Marion County. Many of them still look upon this area as their ancestral Kentucky homeland. Submitted by Lamar Hamilton. Leonard Hamilton, the son of Patrick Hamilton is given in the 1783 tax list of Port Tobacco in possession of 213 acres of land and owning 9 slaves. Right after his father's death (1790), Leonard and his wife, together with their children, some grown or nearly so, a few relatives, and some neighbors, moved to Washington Co., KY with and settled on the Rolling Fork in what is today Marion Co., KY He was reported as a taxable with 600 acres in 1792.He has numerous descendants in that area. Emigrated to Kentucky in 1791 with sisters and other Catholics. Was in Revolutionary War, Maryland Militia. Ensign, Militia, 26th Battalion, Capt. William McPherson's Company, 26 Feb 1776. Took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778. Rendered patriotic service by providing wheat for the military in September and December 1782. Resident of Port Tobacco Upper Hundred in 1778. Was an ensign in Maryland Militia 1794? Lost a son in War of 1812. In letter to his sister Elizabeth McAtee wrote "got killed by a musket ball in the neck". Information from "Marylanders to Kentucky 1775 - 1825" by Henry C. Peden, Jr.:Pages 62 & 63: "HAMILTON. The Hamilton family was among the early Catholic settlers from St. Mary's County, Maryland who migrated to Cartwright's Creek, Kentucky circa 1785 and Rolling Fork, Kentucky circa 1791. He died 22 Nov, 1655 at the house of Nicholas Causin at Port Tobacco, Charles county. Name is sometimes spelled Gynne. Originally of St. Andrews, Holborn, Middlesex, where he and his wife were repeatedly indicted for recusancy (being catholic) between 1626 and 1635. (John Cordy Jeaffreson, ed., Middlesex County Records, Old Series 3:12, 19, 128, 129,130, 131,135,138(1888)). A planter in Charles County, Maryland. Immigrated to Md. in 1642 with his family. Claimed and got 1000 acres for his (and others) transportation, which was next to that of James Neale (patents ABH:27). Cecilius Calvert, Lord Baltimore, wrote letter of introduction to his brother Gov. Leonard Calvert, dated 11/16/1642, directs that whereas this year John Pile and Benjamin Gill intend to transport themselves and others into Maryland, acting in partnership, they are to have 100 acres apiece for themselves, and land in proportion for others transported, according to the conditions of plantations bearing date 10 Nov, 1641. His wife was Anna Marie ?, sometimes called Ann and sometimes Mary. They had four children : Anna Marie, who married Captain James Neale before 8/2 1658 and three sons George, Christopher and Edward Mainwaring. I have nothing on the sons but have a lot more on the daughter. Cheers, Pete Thompson Jerry L. Clark

Jerry, Robert Cole was a nephew of Benjamin Gill, not his son-in-law. From all of the research that has been done, it appears that Benjamin Gill only had one child and she was Ann Gill who married James Neale. Benjamin Gill's wife was Mary Mainwaring a sister of Jane Mainwaring who married Thomas Cole and they were the parents of Robert Cole. Robert Cole married Rebecca, widow of Francis Knott (some say John Knott). I believe that Robert Cole married Elizabeth Tant, not Elizabeth Herbert. 12/1/1724: Admin. accts. of John Tant, SMC. Legatees: Mrs. Mary Tant (left her by her father, dec'd); Ann Tant; Mr. Thomas Thompson and his wife; Elizabeth Cole; Winifred Herbert; Margaret Tant; Eleanor Deacon. Exec.: Margaret Tant (also Mrs. Mary Tant). Note that this time she's called Elizabeth Cole. Colonial Settlers of St. Clement's Bay by Mary Louise Donnelly states that Elizabeth Herbert was the daughter of Matthew Herbert and Grace Hayden and that she married first, Robert Cole and second, James Thompson. She states that James Thompson and his wife Elizabeth administered the estate of Robert Cole in 1722. NOTE: This is incorrect. Elizabeth Herbert, dau. of Matthew and Grace, was under the age of 21 and was single in 1750 at the time of the will of her brother, William Herbert. Vitus Herbert (who m. RE: Robert Cole (c1628-c1663 MD) who married REBECCA, the widow of Francis Knott of England, mother of their two children, Ann (bc1646) and Francis II (c1648), who immigrated to Maryland abt. 1652: Has it been proven that this Rebecca was GILL, the daughter of Benjamin Gill (bc1582-87) who m. Mary Mainwaring? I have this REBECCA unproved as Benjamin's daughter; the only proved daughter was Anna Maria Gill (bc1617) who married Capt. James Neale of Wollaston Manor, Charles County MD. The reason Robert Cole appears on Benjamin GILL's will/probate is this connection, in my file from Linda Reno (don't know the date of that email): "The connection between Robert Cole and Benjamin Gill was that Cole's mother and Gill's wife were sisters, both being daughters of Oliver Mainwaring (d. testate 1631) of Windleshaw (in Prescot), Lancashire and his wife Margaret Torbock. Jane Mainwaring had married by 1615 to Thomas Cole, yeoman, of Heston, a younger son of Robert Cole (d. 1614-15) of Heston and his wife Alice. Mary Mainwaring had married by 1622 to Benjamin Gill, chandler, of St. Andrew Holborn, London. In 1622 Benjamin Gill, his wife Mary, and Jane wife of Thomas Cole appeared on the same roll as convicted recusants in Middlesex. The royal ancestry for these individuals through their mother and grandmother Margaret Torbock can be followed in Mr. Douglas Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry (2004), pp. 490-491." LINDA RENO, Maryland Is this still correct? I descend from this Robert COLE and Rebecca UNKNOWN Knott Cole through their son, Edward Cole (Nov 1657-c1717), mentioned in his father Robert's will of 1662 St. Mary's County, with his other children, Robert [Jr], Mary, William, and Elizabeth; also, my "sonn in law Francis Knott" [step-son?]. Edward Cole married Honora Ford, parents to RUTH who married Thomas Mattingly III abt 1715. Is this information still valid? I thank you all - Marcia -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of mdstmary-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2013 2:00 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: MDSTMARY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 66 Today's Topics: 1.
