Hi Jackie, >From what I see on Ancestry.com, it's claimed that Wilford Medley was the son of Philip Medley, Jr. and Eleanor Neale. Does that agree with your records? The will of Philip Medley, Jr. doesn't mention a son named Wilford. Linda - I've always had him tentatively listed there but really can find no reason to put him as the their son - plus I have another problem with it, but again I lack the definitive evidence. Wilford is said to have been born about 1809- 1810 based on his census records. (And the date of his first marriage in 1830 would lend some credence to that.) I have that John Phillip Medley was born about 1802 and while that falls in the range of his siblings, it would certainly make Wilford an improbable child.. The other thing tending to make me believe that Wilford probably belongs to one of the other Medleys is the marriage date of his purported grandparents in 1795. I haven't done as much work on this branch of the Medley family as I probably should have, but this generation has always bothered me. As I have been working up the Rhodes line and documenting them, I keep finding problems with their associated lines. This is one of them. Dear List, Does anyone have marriage records of Nelson County, KY Need to see if there is a marriage for William MARTIN & Lucina BRAY 02 APR 1831 , Nelson, Kentucky I need to see what it says. Thanks in advance. Also need to find in Nelson or Washington Counties, KY Any John BRAY to Elizabeth ? abt 1828 Charles BRAY to Elizabeth LANGLEY abt 1827 Mary Bray to Cornelius CLARK abt 1817 Nancy A. BRAY to John B. CLARK abt 1826 Leo Clarke to Julia A. Corbett or Carby about 1826 Celestinus "Eliston" LANGLEY to Nancy CLARKE Abt 1835 George Washington BRAY to Ann CLARK abt 1829 I'm thinking these all likely took place in Washington County, KY Because Hillary BRAY married Mary Jane CISSELL 28 Dec 1832 , Washington County, KY. Hillary BRAY a brother of the Bray's listed above. Per the marriage records of Nelson co, KY, George Bray married Anne Masterson on June 3, 1824. the bond was applided for on June 1, 1824. Jane Masterson, mother of Anne consented in person. Samuel Masterson signed bond. I cannot find a marriage of an Ann Clark in the 1800 thru 1832 Nelson Co, KY marriage records. But in Daviess County, KY is this record St. Lawrence Catholic Church records. 18 Mar 1841 Julia Ann Bray s/o George and Ann Clark. b. 6 Jan. Gdm Julia Russelburg. Should be daughter of George BRAY and Ann CLARKE So my question is did the same George Washington BRAY 1st marry Ann MASTERSON June 1, 1824, Nelson County, KY and then she died and he married Ann CLARK in Washington County, KY abt 1829?
Hi, list, Does anyone know whow James Mackey was involved/related to James (1670-1728) and Mary (Goodrick)Semmes of Charles County? I know I saw them mentioned by Linda Reno on the St Mary's list, but I couldn't find the right search phrase to find it in the archives. I would surely appreciate any help as a member of the Mackey family is likely to be my ancestor. Thank you for any help. Norma Lundgren
"The best royal descent for Edward FitzRandolph is from William the Lion, King of Scotland, who died in 1214, via an illegitimate daughter, Isabel of Scotland, who married Magna Charta Surety Robert de Ros. The male line of the FitzRandolph/FitzRandall/ FitzRanulph/FitzRalph family is one of the very few that can be traced before the Norman conquest of 1066. The best royal descent of Martha Eltonhead Conway is almost certainly from Edward I, King of England (died 1307) through the Bohun, FitzAlan, Goushill, Stanley, Savage, Bold, Gerard, and Eltonhead families of medieval and early modern England." This would include Martha's brother William Eltonhead that came to Maryland. Marianne Dillow
List - Over the years, a lot has been made of William Rhodes' claim to have been born in Washington D.C. and its led many of us to create a first unknown wife for Bennett (Benedict) Rhodes to account for the child William. I've decided to delete the unknown wife and move William to what I believe for a number of reasons are his proper parents and that would be William Rhodes of Washington D.C and Ann Simms, making Bennett his uncle. That leaves me with one problem - who ARE Benedict Rhodes children? I can only prove one that survived childhood and that would be Ann Victoria who married Wilford Medley. I have read of another alleged daughter - Nelly (probably Eleanor) who allegedly died young. While that is very probable given her mother's name of Eleanor - I can't prove it. And according to the censuses there should be yet another girl in the family. There at one time should have also been at least another couple of male children in the household. Did all of Bennet's children other than Ann die young or was he in the habit of taking in the neighborhood and family waif's? I would appreciate any help with sorting Benedict's family or extended "family". Jackie

Cowden recorded events witnessed mostly while traveling on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) during the Civil War. In the Introduction, he writes:"It fell to my lot, to pass through Harper's Ferry, on the memorable night of October 16th, 1859, while the force led by John Brown<http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=John+Brown>was in the act of raiding the town." He was only 22 years old at the time. "Being on the Maryland side of the river, our boat passed on down the canal unmolested; when nearing Point of Rocks, I saw a special Train, bearing Genl. Robert E. Lee, and a large number of United States Marines, to the scene of the conflict, which was soon ended by the capture of John Brown of Osawatomie." Point of Rocks is a small community along the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad and C&O Canal just east of Harpers Ferry that hasn't changed much since the War Between the States. During the war, this area served as one of the Union's largest supply depots. When Lee took Brown prisoner at Harpers Ferry in 1859, he held the rank of colonel in the United States Army. Lee would not become a general until he joined the Confederacy. *C&O Canal* Cowden <http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=John+Alex+Cowden> was born in New Brunswick, Canada, on Feb. 25, 1837, the eldest son of John and Mary Ann Firth Cowden. He could trace his roots back to Scotland, where in 1815 his ancestors sailed for North America on a ship called the Alexander. In the spring of 1844, the Cowdens settled in Johnstown, Pa., residing there until 1850, when the family moved to Cumberland, Md.<http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=Cumberland+%28Maryland%29>, on the Potomac River <http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=Potomac+River>. Cowden attained financial prosperity by selling and moving merchandise on the C&O Canal from his home in Cumberland to Washington. It was during one of these business dealings that he had his brush with John Brown. The C&O Canal operated between 1836 and 1924, paralleling the Potomac River from Cumberland to Washington. The total length of what some called the "Grand Old Ditch" was 184.5 miles. The primary purpose of the narrow waterway was to haul coal, lumber and grain by a system of boats or barges pulled by mules walking on a towpath along the side. Early in December 1861, a Confederate officer later to be known as Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson<http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=Thomas+%22Stonewall%22+Jackson>tried demolishing Dam No. 5 on the Potomac River, which furnished water to the canal. Jackson's plan was to prevent coal mined in Western Maryland from reaching the Union's capital. This attempt to cut off an important source of Washington's fuel was one of few objectives the Southern legend failed to accomplish. *Confederate flag* On a business trip in May 1861, Cowden had another brush with history. "As if fate had predetermined my path, I happened to be in the City of Alexandria, Virginia, the day the first Confederate flag was hoisted, waving its folds over the Jackson House. This was the same banner that Col. Elmer Ellsworth <http://www.washtimes.com/themes/?Theme=Elmer+Ellsworth> lost his life in taking down May 1861." * Continues 1 2<http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/16/traveling-witness-to-the-conflict/?page=2> 3<http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/16/traveling-witness-to-the-conflict/?page=3> 4<http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/16/traveling-witness-to-the-conflict/?page=4> 5<http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/16/traveling-witness-to-the-conflict/?page=5> Next<http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/16/traveling-witness-to-the-conflict/?page=2> * Add as Favorite <http://www.washtimes.com/users/content/add/79/326386/> TIMES NETWORK -- Pax et bonum! Hi, I can't answer your question on John Burham but at Family Tree DNA they have tested those who descend from the Corbins but as of right now I believe only one Burham has tested their male DNA. I believe they want an answer to your question also. Alice Eltonhead that married Henry Corbin is a sister to my Martha Eltonhead that married Edwin Conway. This is now the third version I've heard of her surname. A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature says she was Elizabeth Osbaldeston. Jane Eltonhead was b. about 1633 presumably in Lancashire. Her father, Richard Eltonhead, had been b. in 1611 and at an early age married Anne, dau. of Richard Massey of Ruxton, Lancashire. Six Eltonhead sisters married VA gentlemen, yet it is not known how and when these Eltonhead maidens arrived in VA. The other five daughters of Richard Eltonhead who came to VA were: Martha who became the second wife of Edwin Conway; Agatha who married Ralph Wormeley; Eleanor who married Edward Brocas; Alice who married Rowland Burnham and William Henry Corbin; and Katherine who married Thomas Mears. Richard Eltonhead was the son of Richard Eltonhead, Gent. who was b. in 1582 and who married Anne, dau. of Edward Sutton of Rushton Spencer, Staffordshire. It was he, the grandfather of Jane (Eltonhead) Moryson-Fenwick who at his estate Ormeskeite on 9/23/1664 recorded his paternal ancestry back seven generations to one Henri Eltonhedde de Eltonhead, the manuscript being now in the British museum. Hi Linda, Thank you very much for sending this information. You sent me looking through my records as I haven't researched my Eltonhead line for a long time and my research is in Virginia and England. I had nothing in Maryland except William Eltonhead came to Maryland. I did find what you have that William Eltonhead's wife was Jane Fenwick, sister of Cuthbert Fenwick. I have also foind the following that anyone researching the Eltonhead line might like to have. " The Parish Register of Prescot, 1573-1631, ed. by E. V. Driffield, (Lancashire Parish Register Series, Vol. 76 (R. Seed and Sons: Preston, 1938), LDS Microfilm 0844816, Christenings 1580-1631/2. Marriages 1575-1631/2. Burials 1573-1632.... "c 1622, p. 32, (town) Sutton, Agatha, father Richard Eltonhead, gent:, 10 Feb." "The Eltonhead family comprised father Richard Eltonhead, mother Ann Sutton, and 16 children. The family seem to have been Catholic and Royalist, although most of the children were baptized in the Church of England--The Royalist Composition Papers... County of Lancashire.., ed J.H. Stanning (The Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, 1892), Vol. 2 (C-F), p. 279: " RICHARD ELTONHEAD , the ELDER of SUTTON, Gentleman, (Second Series, Vol. XIII, No. 2,541, fol. 797 &c) fo 797. He petitioned 19 June 1649, and compounded upon a particular which disclosed that he was seized of a frank tenement for his life, remainder to RICHARD ELTONHEAD, his SON, in tail, of and in a capital messuage and lands called ELTONHEAD HALL and a mill and other lands there worth L41; but he claimed a Michaelmas Term 1646, and the lands had been extended thereupon in the Exchequer; he also stood indebted to various other persons in the aggregate sum of L190. Linda, I haven't researched the Eltonhead's in Mayland but I did find a notation that goes along with what you said, that Richard Eltonhead, (JR) was born 1623, married Ann Massey. He died after Sep 1664... he is the son of Richard Eltonhead, Sr. and Anne Sutton. So, I don't know where Elizabeth Obaldston comes in ? Also, going back to records in England... "Richard was heir to his father, the eldest son having died in infancy. Brother Henry died 1670 evidently died unmarried in England but had strong ties to Ireland. Lothrop Withington... Virginia Gleanings in England--- Baltimore: Genealogical Oublishing Co., 1980), pp. 392-393. " Henty Eltonhead, whose will was dated in 1665, was a brother of Richard Eltonhead, of Eltonhead, though not name in the (visitation) chart. This is evident as he names his brother THOMAS MEARES." " Henry Eltonhead late of London Esq. deceased Will 27 July 1665. .. names brother R. Eltonhead... moneys due me in Ireland by bond in Mr. John Doughty's hands in Dublin L100... Perogative Court of Ireland, Will Book 1668-72, folio 166." " This will shows the economic ties in England, Ireland, and the colonies that closely follow the blood ties. Clement Hogg is undoubtedly kin to the Wormleys." Richard Eltonhead , Sr. was born ca 1582 in Eltonhead, Lancashire, England. He died ca 1665. He married Anne Sutton, she was born ca 1586 in Rushton, Spencer. Staffordshire, England. She died ca 1685 in England. Her parents are Edward Sutton and Thepdosia Harrington. The Sutton surname goes back in earler generations to Dudley Castle. There is a difference in some of our data. I have Jane Eltonhead as the daughter of Richard Eltonhead, Sr. and Anne Sutton along with Agatha, my grandmother Martha, Alice, and Eleanor Eltonhead. But above it states Richard and Anne had 16 children. Also, I don't have a first wife for Edwin Conway. Only Martha Eltonhead. I descend from their daughter Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr. I know most people on the intenet assign my Edwin Conway as the son of Viscount Edward Vincent Conway who was Secretary of England under James I and Charkes I who married Dorothy Ann Tracy but Sir Edward Vincent Conway does not name Edwin as his son in his will although they were in neighboring counties. I am still researching his lineage. My Martha Eltonhead was brought to Virgiinia by Edwin Conway in 1652 and he also brought John Sutton over in that year. I have seen on the internet tht Katherine Eltonhead married Thomas Meares but I don't have anymore info on her except for the notes on Tho. Meares above. I didn't have anything om William Eltonhead in St. Mary's so I really thank you for the information on him. If you see anything else or differences in data please let me know. I always like to share what I have with others. I could be wrong on William Eltonhead below. He may be an uncle to the five Eltonhead girls instead of their brother. Anway, I also descend from Martha Eltonhead and Edwin Conway's daughter, Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr. Marianne Dillow --- On Mon, 10/13/08, marianne dillow <mdillow31@verizon.net> wrote: > From: marianne dillow <mdillow31@verizon.net> > Subject: Eltonhead Line in Maryland, Virginia. and England, > To: MDSTMARY@rootsweb.com > Date: Monday, October 13, 2008, 10:34 PM > My 9th great grandparents are Martha Eltionhead that married > Edwin Conway. My 9th great grandparents are Martha Eltionhead that married Edwin Conway. Martha is the daughter of Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton. I am attempting to trace Richard Eltonhead's lineage but there appears to be several generations going to Henry Eltonhead, first I see of the line. According to another persons research the following is noted. " Parrin, in his Register of Maryland Heraldic Families Pages 273-277 shows that family of NORRES or NORRIS family were owners of the manor of Eltonhead. The origins of the NORRES family became Eltonhead and started in Sutton, Lancashire, England before the beginning of the reign of Henry III." " In his comment on Eltonhead, Sir william Norres of Speke affirms that there were families in Sutton who had once carried the name of Norres but had given it up." " The Eltonheads original crest was on a window in Chidwell Church, County, Lancashire. It displays the same crest as Sir Henry Norres who married Alice of Chester, daughter of Roger de Ernys." I have as data, Richard Eltonhead was born ca 1582 in Eltonhead, Lancashire England and died 23 Sep 1664 in the same location, son of William Eltonhead and Anne Bowers. His wife Anne Sutton was born ca 1586 in Rushton, Staffordshire, England and died about 1686 in England. She is the daughter of Edward Sutton and Theodosia Harrington. Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton had five daughters that came to Virginia and a brother William Eltonhead that came to Maryland. Children: i. William Eltonhead born ca 1615 in Lancashire, England and died 14 May 1657 in Calvert Co., MD. He was a member of the Maryland Council. Hayden shows that William Eltonhead took the oath of fealty on 2 Jan 1646, and that he was a member of the King's Privy Council 29 Sep 1649, or a little more than two years after taking his oath of fealty to the Stuarts. He took the oath as a member of the Privy Council 22 Jul 1650 and undertook a mission to the colony of Maryland as agent of Lord Baltimore 1654-5. There he was killed in the conflict between Governor Stone and Fenwick. ii. Agatha Eltonhead m (1) Luke Stubbins ; (2) Ralph Wormley, Sr. ; (3) Henry Chicheley. iii. Alice Eltonhead m (1) Rowland Burham; (2) Henry Corbin; 93) Henry Creyke. iv. Martha Eltonhead m (1) Edwin Conway (my grandparents) ; m (2) William Stanard. v. Jane Eltonhead m (1) Robert Moryson; (2) Cuthbert Fenwick. vi. Eleanor Eltonhead m (1) Col. John Carter; (2) Capt. William Brocus. Any information on the Eltonhead line are others kin to the ones mentioned I would like to hear from. I descend from Martha Eltonhead that married Edwin Conway. Marianne Dillow Illinois
