Dear List, Does anyone have will of the John Hamilton son of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Shercliffe? I understand this John Hamilton has a daughter Clare born abt 1755 could she be the Cloe ? wife of Richard Langhorn CLARKE? Always have to consider this since Hamilton Family plays as much a role in my Clarke line as HOWARD, BRAY, JOHNSON, etc.
Shirley -- Do you know a) when/where James Hamilton died? b) the children of James Hamilton and Mary Ann Coomes/Combs? Ernie In a message dated 11/10/2008 12:47:55 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, shirleymoller@verizon.net writes: Pulled the original and it reads as follows....... 5/8/1750: Lease from Henry Neale of SMC, Gent. to William and Patrick Hamilton of CC, planters, 225 ac., pt. of "Green Springs" in CC for the lives of William Hamilton, Anastasia Hamilton Wife of the said William and Patrick Hamilton. Ann Neale released her dower. (CC Land Rec. Book Z, #2: 424-425). So I would bet the following deed is correct also. 8/11/1768: From John Hamilton, Wm. Hamilton, James Hamilton, and Patrick Hamilton of CC to Samuel Hamilton of CC, planter pt. of "Spye Park", 80 ac. Sarah, Anna Statia, and Mary Anne, wives of sd. John, William, and James relinq. their right of dower. (CC Deeds). William was married, and Anastasia had already died so who else would he leave his estate to? His family. Found the source for Anastasia Coombes d/o Thomas Coombes and Elizabeth Wharton marrying Joseph s/o of John Hamilton and Sarah Stewart. Donnelly put it forth in her book on the Hamilton family. But even if Anastasia didn't marry Wm Hamilton, she would have been to old to marry Joseph. And if she did marry Wm Hamilton she surely wouldn't have remarried to his nephew. So some person having come upon both bits of info took Donnelly's info and the info from the Kelley & Cherault book combined them and made it one Anastasia, marrying both men. They got to the mouth of the Mississippi by Feb. 21, but they couldn't travel upriver due to heavy fog. A strong east wind blew them to Matagorda Bay , Texas , where it was seized by the Spanish. The crew and passengers were arrested as smugglers and had to work at hard labor in Presidio de La Bahia (today's Goliad , Texas ). When they were released, they traveled overland to Natchitoches , arriving in late October. The fellow in charge, Commandant Athanaze Demezieres tried to get them to stay there, but they convinced him otherwise. The made it to Iberville Parish, and were given land on the west bank of the Mississippi River by mid-April. A number of these Acadians later moved to the Opelousas area. (The Founding of New Acadia, Brasseaux, p. 104) My Very Dear Sir: From the attached documents Your Excellency will see what happended to an English (Maryland) vessel that enetered Espirtu Santo Bay... To the Most Excellent Senor Don Alexandro O'Reilly...governor of Louisianna: We, John Steel, Francis Loundiz, Joseph Mattingly, Philip Ford, Leonard Mattingly, Neal Kerigan, Joseph Hamilton, Charles Steward, and Joseph Mattingly, Jr., seaman of the English (Maryland) schooner La Bretana, presenting ourselves most humbly before your Excellency, say the on the 5th of January this year, we left the port of Maryland (Port Tobacco) with one hundred passengers aboard, destined for New Orleans, and that on the 21st of February following, we sighted the coast of Lousianna; but due to easterly winds and continuous fog we were driven some eighty leagues south and then to the west of the Mississippi... ...We were detained by the said Don Francisco Thobar, until the 11th of September, when Don Rafael Martinez Pacheco, commandant of Fort Cokesaw, was sent by the governor of that province to take us to Natchitoches. There we were embarked in some canoes for New Orleans, where we arrived on the 9th of this month (December)... MARTÍNEZ PACHECO, RAFAEL (?-?). In 1759 Rafael Martínez Pacheco, presidio commander and government official, petitioned the viceroy of New Spain for a post in Texas, where he said he had had experience in helping Diego Ortiz Parrilla move the San Francisco Xavier de Gigedo Presidio from the San Marcos River to the San Saba in 1757. Martínez claimed to have recruited families to settle at San Saba and to have served as conductor of supplies and horses for San Antonio de Béxar Presidio. On November 23, 1763, he was appointed commander of San Agustín de Ahumada Presidio,qv on the lower Trinity River. His inadequate work and failure to report antagonized Governor Ángel de Martos y Navarrete, who ordered the removal of the presidio to Los Horconcitos and eventually ordered Martínez's arrest. In the ensuing conflict the presidio was burned, and Martínez fled to La Bahía and San Antonio. Hugo Oconór, who came to San Antonio in 1765 to investigate the matter, found Martínez Pacheco not responsible for the trouble and returned him to his presidio. He arrived at the Trinity on September 28, 1769, and began an efficient administration of his post. In the fall of 1769 he was made responsible for delivering to the French post at Natchitoches a group of English, German, and Cajun families who had been shipwrecked near La Bahía. Thirty Acadians sailed from Port Tobacco, Maryland on the schooner Britain for New Orleans on Jan. 5, 1769. They got to the mouth of the Mississippi by Feb. 21, but they couldnt travel upriver due to heavy fog. A strong east wind blew them to Matagorda Bay , Texas , where it was seized by the Spanish. The crew and passengers were arrested as smugglers and had to work at hard labor in Presidio de La Bahia (todays Goliad , Texas ). Joseph Hamilton heir at law was not present at probate. L39, f99 I examined the original libers myself this summer at MD Archives and took photos of liber pgs including the wills of Alexander, John Hambleton of Talbot Co., and the above William Hamilton of C.C. The last line on the will in the original liber at MD Archives CC#3, f290 reads: "NB[?] Joseph Hamilton heir at Sworn Before Law was at the time of the taking of the above probat Beyond the seas" Where do we place Joseph? What of the curious letter that looks like a "B?" 8/11/1768: From John Hamilton, Wm. Hamilton, James Hamilton, and Patrick Hamilton of CC to Samuel Hamilton of CC, planter pt. of "Spye Park", 80 ac. Sarah [Stewart], Anna Statia[?], and Mary Anne [Coombes?], wives of sd. John, William, and James relinq. their right of dower. (CC Deeds). William Hamilton's wife was Anastasia Combs, sister of Mary Ann Combs wife of Capt. James Hamilton. Mary Ann and Anastasia were the daughters of Thomas Combs and Elizabeth Wharton. [What proof her maiden name was Coombes?] This William Hamilton was son of Patrick, he married Violetta Hagan. p. 78, TLC Genealogy, Charles County Land Records Book 1765-1770 O#3 Page 499. Aug 11, 1768 from John Hamilton, William Hamilton (Hamelton), James Hamilton, and Patrick Hamelton of CC, planters, to Samuel Hamilton of CC, planter, for 6000 lbs of crop tobacco and for divers other good causes, part of a tract of land called Spye Park, lying on the south side of Pourtobacco Branch, bounded by William Coombs' land, Coombs Purchase, containing about 80 acres. Signed - John (Joh his mark) Hamilton, Will. Hamilton, James Hamilton. Wit - Jos. H. Harrison*, Geo: Lee*. Sarah Anna Statia and Mary Anne, wives of sd John, William, and James (see note), relinquished their rights of dower. Recorded Dec 3, 1768. Note. There is no punctuation in this sentence in the deed, so it is not possible to be sure how many wives acknowledged this deed. Perhaps due to transcription error, Patrick is not mentioned except once - he does not sign his name and his wife is not mentioned. We guess that 4 wives relinquished their dower rights, and one of them was the wife of Patrick. (NJL note: Sarah, Anna, Stacia, and Mary Anne, wives of John, Patrick, William, and James, respectively.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "K. Pulled the original and it reads as follows....... His family. Shirley Middleton Moller

List- I've been working on this issue myself and have come to the conclusion that we need the original deed to cofirm that what is quoted in parenthesis. (wife of william) Extracted records are notorious for creating relationships where none may have existed. I have not tried to obtain the parish record in LA. Mentions of Joseph suggest he was unavailable at probate. Not sure if these records housed in New Orleans, which is still a mess after Katrina. I do have the citation of the church. While there is no marriage date stated it mentions children names. My next avenue was Salt lake in Dec, then attend next reunion to get to Chas. Co. I do have ciitations that discount all claims of a known surname for wife of Alexander. There is simply NO proof. Much has been "created". William clearly died testate in 1773 and leaves bequests only to brothers,sisters-no wife or children mentioned. I can post or share data as soon as I get back to TX, if anyone needs it. -----Original Message----- From: SHIRLEY MOLLER <shirleymoller@verizon.net> Sent: Monday, November 10, 2008 11:04 AM To: Dottie Himes <djhimes@bellsouth.net>; mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] William B. Folks, I have found the source for where all the "current" information being passed out and excepted as correct come from regarding Alexander's wife Elizabeth being a Shercliff or a Green and whether William their son was married or died single. 1946 research.... THE HAMILTON FAMILY OF CHARLES COUNTY MARYLAND MRS. MARIA LOUISA HAMILTON HELLEY MRS. INEZ BATEMAN CHERAULT GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF UTAH LIBRARY JUNE 1946 The researchers state that Wm Shercliff and wife Mildred had nine children: 7. Elizabeth, wife of Alexander Hamilton Then two pages over they are giving info on Wm Hamilton and they state the following, William, son of Alexander Hamilton and his wife, "Elizabeth Shercliff Green". So these ladies have now added the name Green, Elizabeth's step father's name to her. Confusing as to why they would do that, I think. They now call her "Elizabeth Shercliff Green" and this was picked up and passed down and has caused confusion ever since. Next they also state that William son of Alexander and Elizabeth was not married. This was solely based upon his will, so this book is where that bit of info started. Any research done on the Hamilton family after 1946 used this book as their source, so you can see how the mistakes and errors are passed on. I love old research, it gives good clues, but it also is fun to find and correct. These two ladies didn't have access to the records for these families or I'm certain they would have had it right. And I think it does show if you want correct info, you should do your own research. -----Original Message----- From: Shirley Hern [mailto:shirley.hern@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Wednesday, November 05, 2008 10:03 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Compton, Clarke, Branson My earliest known Compton was John Compton (born abt 1700). He was of Louisa and Amelia Co's., VA beginning in the early 1740s. I suspect he was one of the two unnamed sons of the John Compton who died in 1713/14 in Charles Co., MD, but have nothing to prove this--see notes below. He also had a son John, born about 1725/6. John the elder died in Amelia Co., VA in 1771/72. If, as is supposed, the wife of John Compton (died Charles Co., MD in 1718/19) was the daughter of Robert Clarke, the surveyor, I have two lines from him. My other line from his son John Clarke, seems fairly solid. My Branson line begins in Montgomery Co., VA in the 1780s with Jarret Branson. I am uncertain of his origins. Perhaps he was of the Burlington, NJ Bransons or he may have descended from the MD group. Is it coincidental that descendants all three of these families ended up in Osage Co., MO in the 1850s or earlier by very different routes? Branson by 1830. NOTES: The parentage of John Compton is not proven, nor has any record been found linking him to the Compton family of St. Mary's and Charles Counties, Maryland. It is speculated that he was the son of John Compton Jr. John and Mary Clarke Compton had seven children according to a family Bible in the Maryland Historical Society collection, as noted by Peter Wilson. [I have not verified this]. John Sr. named two sons in his will dated in 1713, John Jr. and Mathew, but John Jr. predeceased his father. Mathew died in 1747 leaving a will. Samuel also died before John Sr. leaving an only daughter. James left one known daughter and his date of death is not known. John Jr. left three sons when he died in 1714. Of the three sons of John Jr., only the eldest is known by name. This was William who was of age in 1719/20. The two others may have been John [the subject of this sketch] and James born 1705/6. Any comments or corrections are welcome. I appreciate your help on any/all of these families. Shirley Hern
Dottie, The following info seems to be "the" source for the info that you posted. But I think the info is confusing. http://www.combs-families.org/combs/families/c-rich-md.htm Anastasia married William Hamilton s/o Alexander Hamilton of Spy Park and Elizabeth Sheircliffe Anastasia (Thomas2, Richard1), born 1743 died 11 Aug 1799, Iberville Parish, LA, married Joseph Ignatius HAMILTON >From the land deeds that I sent and Norma sent, you now know that Wm was married to Anastasia before he died. Anastasia was alive when her mother wrote her will in Jan 1771; but she had died by the time her husband had written his will in Jun of 1771. I said she died in Charles Co., because her husband died there and I'm sure she died at home also. Hope this helps clear up some of the questions. Hi Norma, Thanks for sending the information below...........I see what it says, This lease is for the term of the natural > lives of William Hamilton, Anastasia Hamilton, wife of the sd William, and > Patrick Hamilton, so now how do we decide what books are right ? That is sometimes hard to do. Then there are sources (the books that I found) that say that he did not marry, William B. Hamilton Will does not mention a wife. William d 1773 and Annastasia Coombes died in 1799, so the Will of William B. Hamilton should have mentioned his wife. It sure is puzzling. What date of birth and death do you show for Anastasia. Just to be sure, what do you have for Anastasia's maiden name. Do you have Coombes? Perhaps some of the very talented Genealogists will be able to help us.
