Linda, I've often wondered about the wording of the 20 Jul 1703 administration account of John Wattson. "Payments to: Mrs. Jane Watson due Jane daughter of Capt. Greenhalgh, wife (unnamed) of Edward Moller, wife (unnamed) of Thomas Rose". As far as I can understand, Thomas Rose married Jane, the widow of Emanuel Pitcher, before Emanuel's 8 Jun 1696 administration account. Do you know how this Jane Pitcher/Rose was related to the other Janes involved with Thomas Spinke? Any help is greatly appreciated. Norma
Below is my note to Mike Gough explaining why I think Elizabeth was Elizabeth Jarboe vs. Elizabeth Spink. My note to Mike Gough, 11/27/2003: Hi Mike, I've been "round the horn" on this since yesterday and here's where I am at this point: I think she was actually Elizabeth Jarboe, dau. of John Jarboe, Jr. (d. 1705). She married first, George Medcalf between 1698 and 1702; second, Samuel Davis between 1702-1707; and third, James Gough by 1711. The will of John Jarboe, Jr. named his daughter Elizabeth, but he didn't give a surname, so it begs the question as to whether she was married or single. What got me back on this theory is the will of Henry Jarboe, Elizabeth's uncle and guardian. If you'll note, Henry named James Gough and Elizabeth Davis as two of the trustees of his estate during the minority of his children. In my opinion, this is Elizabeth (Jarboe) Medcalf/Davis. I wouldn't doubt that Elizabeth wasn't already a widow at this point and it wasn't long after this will that she married James Gough. Will of Henry Jarboe, SMC, 3/18/1708-4/18/1709. Eldest son: Henry, dwelling plantation, 100 ac. Son: Peter, 100 ac. where Thomas Lowe, shoemaker, lives. Son: Charles, 100 ac. Son: Ignatius, 100 ac. Daughter: Mary, 50 ac. Daughter: Monica, 50 ac. All children, afsd., personalty. Should daughters die without issue, their estate to revert to Charles and Ignatius. Trustees during minority of children: Brother, Peter Joy; John Niles (should be Miles); James Gough; and Elizabeth Davis. Wit.: John Raley, Daniel Langhorn, Edward Howell, Mary Langhorn. I can't find any administration accounts for Samuel Davis anywhere. For a long time, I thought he might be the son of Thomas Davis and Mary Thomas, but that doesn't work as that Samuel Davis was living as late as 1719. Linda --- Eleanor Spink, daughter of William Spink and Elizabeth Mills, is the one who married Francis Nevitt. Will of William Spink, SMC 2/13/1697-5/21/1698. Testator desires sale of 100 ac., pt. of tract of 250 ac. "Twitnam" which has been made to William Howard confirmed same having been paid for. Brother: Henry, "St. William's Hermitage" and residue of "Twitnam", sd. tract having been given to testator and sd. brother jointly by their father. Daughter: Eleanor and unborn child jointly, 50 ac. on n. side of Breton Bay, bought of William Howard, and all personal estate. Wife: Elizabeth, Exec. Wit: Richard Newman, John Jarboe, Thomas Lowe. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Eleanor is also named in the will of her uncle, William Dant: Will of William Dant, planter, SMC, 1/31/1714-5/16/1715. To: Cousins, John Dant and William Mills and their heirs, "Poplar Neck" with land adjoining, 76 ac. "Anstruther", equally. If the sd. John Dant dies without issue, then to John Mills and his heirs. To: Brother, Peter Mills, Exec., and to cousin Eleanor Nevitt, personalty. Wit.: William Coade, Elizabeth Hooke, Stephen Vinall, Hannah Vinall. There was no Jane Spink, daughter of Thomas. Thomas Spink m. second, Jane Greenhalgh and after his death, Jane m. second, John Watson and then third, Edward Moller. Admin. accts. of Jane Payne 10/4/1695; payments to Isaac Payne and Rachel Payne; Exec., Jane Watson (exec. of Thomas Spink who was exec. of deceased), now wife of John Watson (Skinner). --- I don't list any children for John Medcalf and Mary Smith either. --- William Medcalf m. Susanna Smith, dau. of Peter Smith, Jr., but she wasn't the daughter of Dorothy. All of Peter Smith, Jr.'s children were by a previous, unknown wife. I have another daughter of Peter Smith, Jr. who was the mother of Joseph Stratford. Will of Peter Smith, St. Mary's Co., 12/30/1717-1/8/1717/18. Son: Peter and heirs, a plantation in the forest "Dansburry Hill", 130 ac., with house, mare, feather bed and furniture, etc., and half of moveables; if he dies without issue, to daughters Elizabeth and Susanna. Daughter: Sarah Howard, a steer and barrowhog. Daughter: Mary Johnson, a steer and barrowhog. Grandson: Joseph Stratford, a heifer. Rest to daughters Elizabeth and Susanna. Now d.p. to daughter Susanna after death of wife. Wife: Dorothy, horse and heifer. No part of wife's estate (whatever she joined with mine) should be reputed or taken as mine for which reason sd. wife relinquished all her property in or to any part or parcel of my estate saving that she may enjoy now d. p. during natural life. Upon discord of wife and children, provisions equally divided and her part separated and Exec. to take care of children and their part. Exec.: Robert Hord. (Dr. Lois Green Carr Men's Career Files, MSA). --- John Medcalf, son of William and Susanna m. Elizabeth French, daughter of John French and ____Brown, daughter of Peter Brown (d. 1758). John French was the son of Martin French and Mary _____. I haven't found anything to prove that Mary was a Brown. --- Below is my reasoning for why I believe that Ignatius Medcalf was a brother of John Kenelm Medcalf, and a son of Ignatius Medcalf and Sarah Ford. From: Linda Reno To: P&L Himmelheber Sent: Friday, February 08, 2008 10:45 AM Subject: Re: Questions There was an Ignatius Medcalf. That's what had me going. The issue was that he was in Nelson Co., KY as of 1787. Some claim that he was the son of John Medcalf and Elizabeth French. I'm not buying....Elizabeth French m. second, Charles Joy who named her children in his will in 1783, none of whom were named Ignatius. All of this is coming together now. John Kenelm Medcalf, son of Ignatius Medcalf and Sarah Ford (dau. of John Ford and Elizabeth Riley) also went to KY. He had a wife named Winifred (who I believe was a Payne, dau. of John Baptist Payne and Ann Nottingham). They had a daughter named Sarah Medcalf who married Felix Wimsatt on January 5, 1805 in Nelson Co., KY. Felix Wimsatt was born in St. Mary's County in 1778 and was the son of Ignatius Wimsatt and Mary (Mills) Medley. Sarah Medcalf was born in St. Mary's County in 1782. Here they are in 1850: 1850, Nelson Co., KY: HH 782 782 Felix Wimsett 72 M MD Sarah 68 F MD W. 50 M KY deaf & dumb E. 43 F KY M. 10 M KY Mary (Mills) Medley/Wimsatt died between 1796-1798 because by 1799 Ignatius Medcalf had moved to Nelson County, KY where he married second, Eleanor Nottingham (daughter of Athanasius Nottingham), widow of John Basil Heard (d. in Washington Co., KY 1796-1798). John Basil Heard was one of the witnesses to the will of the other Clement Medley who d. in 1774. Ignatius Wimsatt died in 1806. Abstracts of Wills, 1785-1820, Nelson County, Kentucky, p. 36, Will of Ignatius Wimsatt, decd. Will Book A, p. 977, wr. 2 Dec. 1806, pr. 11 May 1807. Wife Eleanor to have all goods and property; after her death to be divided between children Ann, Ignatius and Pironella; son Felix 3 shillings. Exr. wife Eleanor. Witn. William T. Shancey, Richard Gardner. From Bob Moore, Patboblex@aol.com (sent to me by Judith Burger). Mary Yoder who is a Medcalf descendant says that Ethelburt Mills was living in the household of Ignatius Medcalf in Nelson Co., KY in 1787. She has never figured out the connection. I think I have. First of all, I believe that Ignatius Medcalf was also the son of Ignatius Medcalf and Sarah Ford. He was a Jr., named for his father. Secondly, Ethelburt Mills was the nephew of Mary (Mills) Medley/Medcalf. That's why he was living with Ignatius Medcalf in 1787. When Felix Wimsatt married Sarah Medcalf, he was marrying his second cousin, once removed. John Kenelm Medcalf is the only proven child of John Medcalf and Sarah Ford at this point. This comes from the will of Jesse Ford, Sarah's brother: Will of Jesse Ford, SMC, planter 11/15/1767-12/29/1767. Nephew: John Kenelm Medcalf, pt. of two tracts "Downham" and "Long in Dispence" but if no heirs then to brother, Ignatius Ford; at my death, a cow and calf to be chosen for him by his mother; and a negro boy Joe by indenture bound to me until he is age 21. Sister: Sarah Medcalf a cow and calf; furniture; negro wench Mary Wood who is by indenture. Should my sister again remarry, then it is my desire that she no longer be suffered to live on the land devised to my sd. nephew. Brother: Ignatius Ford, bull; pots; pewter; gun; hogs; sheep; and cattle. Exec: Sister, Sarah Medcalf. Wit: John Ford, Francis Boarman, Timothy Bowes. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). I have to wonder if the will was transcribed correctly. Wonder if it didn't really say "but if no heirs then to HIS brother, Ignatius (meaning Ignatius Medcalf). Nevertheless, I still think he was Sarah's son. Linda --- I'm not getting the connection between the AA County Medcalfs and those of St. Mary's County. That's correct. Susanna Heard, daughter of John Heard and Mary Greenwell, married Thomas Norris. Will of John Heard, SMC 12/23/1746-1/20/1746-7. Children: John, Jonah, William, James, John Basil, Susanna Norris, Mark Peake. Son: John, 160 ac. "Well Found". Son: William, rest of "Well Found". Son: James, "Heard's Hardship". Mentioned Luke Heard. Son: John Basil, dwelling plantation. Daughter: Susanna Norris, 1 shilling. Execs: Sons, James and John Basil. Wit: Matthew Heard, Ignatius Jarboe, Peter Peake. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Susanna was named in her husband's will in 1784. She was deceased prior to 2/12/1796. Linda Reno ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. I think this William Medcalf Sr. was referring to Peter PEAKE Jr. as his next of Kin, and Peter Peake Jr. married Mary HEARD daughter of John HEARD and Mary GREENWELL. -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda Reno Sent: Friday, December 26, 2008 7:31 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] William Medcalf I have Susanna ____ m. first, John Bowles, Jr. and second, William Medcalf, Jr. I have no third husband. Research from James Donald Yates [website referenced below] -- Francis Peake, Sr., s/o Edward Peake and Ann Wheatley of St. Mary's County, Maryland was born in 1734 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died in 1776. Franicis' brother, John Kenelem Peake was born on 11 Mar 1760 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He died in 1814 in Nelson Co., Ky; John Kenelem Peake married Ann Barber or Gent... she died 1814 in Nelson Co., Ky., In 1793, when Joseph French married Mary Norris, daughter of Rodolph Norris, Francis Peake acted as surety for the license, and he and Ignatius French witnessed the marriage. Ignatius French was later married to Kenelm's daughter Mary Peake in 1809. When Francis Peake Sr. married his second wife Bibiana Norris, also a daughter of Rodolph and Dorothy Norris, on February 14, 1800, Joseph French and Ignatius Medcalf acted as witnesses. Then in 1805, when Enoch Norris and Ann French were married, Francis Peake stood surety for the license. Kenelm Peake's will was witnessed by Ignatius French and James Medcalf, from whom he rented land. Rodolph Norris' will was witnessed by Ignatius Medcalf and Ignatius French. Both wills were probated on the same day, Feb. 21, 1814. Also, George Medcalf provided surety when Henrietta Peake, widow of Kenelm Peake's son Edward, was married to James Carrico in 1828. Rodolph Norris, the son of Thomas Norris and Jane Greenwell, was one of the 60 listed members of the League of Catholic families, of which Francis Peake was also a member. Rodolph's daughter Bibiana Norris Peake, the second wife of Francis Peake, may have been born outside St. Mary's County, as her birth is not listed in the records of either St. Francis Xavier or St. Andrew's Church. The births of three other children of Rodolph and Dorothy Norris, Mary Ann (b. Apr. 22, 1768), Mary (bap. Aug. 25, 1771) and Thomas (bap. June 27, 1773) were recorded in St. Mary's County. Rodolph Norris signed the Maryland Oath of Allegiance in 1778. Two cousins of the family, Henry Elijah Norris (b. March 14, 1758) and Arnold Norris (b. June 26, 1761), sons of John Norris and Mary Howard, served in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. Both were drafted on July 27, 1781, at a time when heavy recruiting was taking place in Maryland and elsewhere to defend against the British army's operations in Virginia. Both were discharged in December of 1781 following the defeat of the British forces at Yorktown. Francis Peake, Sr. was born on 4 Feb 1764 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He died on 1 Mar 1846. However the evidence suggests that he was the son of Thomas Moseley who landed in St. Mary's county in 1669 and died there in 1697. He was reported to be an indentured servant who immigrated to Maryland from England at that time. We do not have a name of his wife. does anyone know the name of his wife? Mary Yoder, Here are some other points you may have missed. William Medcalf m Susanna SMETH (SMITH), d/o Peter Jr & Dorothy (his will 30 Dec 1717 SMC, MD; his father Peter Smith bef 1640 & Hannah; has a son Peter III (had a son Peter IV); Sarah SMITH (m William HOWARD); Elizabeth SMITH m Robert Parsons; Mary SMITH m John Mecalf (no children). William Medcalf had a wife named Susanna, she wasn't Susanna Smith, dau. of Peter. And, now that I'm looking at all of that, I can't even swear she was Susanna Smith! There's nothing to tie this Susanna to Peter Smith as his daughter Susanna was single at the time of his will in 1717 and was still single in 1719. So, who was the Susanna? who married Wlliam MEDCALF His daughter m. first, John Baptist Buckman (this is a claim put forth by Donnelly and I've found no proof); second, John Bould, Jr.; and third, another William Medcalf (and I don't know who he is) between 1752-1754. The following is the proof of her second and third marriages: Admin. accts. of John Bould, SMC, 12/5/1753. Exec: Susanna Bould. 12/2/1754: Admin. accts. of John Bould, SMC. Exec: Susanna Bould, now wife of William Medcalf. And, now that I'm looking at all of that, I can't even swear she was Susanna Smith! There's nothing to tie this Susanna to Peter Smith as his daughter Susanna was single at the time of his will in 1717 and was still single in 1719. So, who was she? Linda Reno Will of Dorothy Smith, SMC, 1/3/1742-4/21/1743. To: Grandchildren, Henry, Ruth, Margaret, Michael, Henry, Joshua, and Susanna Winstread, and goddaughter, Ann Nevitt, personal estate. Exec.: Abraham Barnes. Wit.: George and Thomas Thompson, and Peter Mugg. NOTE: Testator desires to be buried by her husband, Thomas Roson (dec'd) and by codicil gives the past labor of her slaves to her son-in-law, Thomas Winstead. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Linda Reno 11/4/03 She did have a daughter named Thomasine Roson by her first husband, Thomas Roson and Dorothy's will below names only her descendants by Thomasine. Linda Reno 11/4/03 The only legatees that Dorothy mentioned in her will in 1742 were the children of her daughter Thomasine, daughter by her first husband, Thomas Roson, who had married Thomas Winstead (Wimsatt?). Linda Reno 12/4/03 Admin. accts. of Thomas Winstead 4/2/1750 and 5/1/1750; appraisers were Thomas Graves, Jr. and John Booker; next of kin was Thomas Winstead and Henry Winstead, Jr.; Exec., Tomason Winsett (Skinner). Linda Reno 12/4/03 Second, Sarah Smith was the daughter of Peter Smith, but she wasn't the daughter of Dorothy Martin. I don't believe that Dorothy Martin had any children at all by Peter Smith. She did have a daughter named Thomasine Roson by her first husband, Thomas Roson and Dorothy's will below names only her descendants by Thomasine. Linda Reno 11/4/03 Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this whole family needs to be taken apart and reconstructed. Dorothy ______(and there's no proof that she was the daughter of James Martin) was not the mother of the children of Peter Smith. Dorothy was married first to Thomas Roson and when she died (1743) her will named only her grandchildren--by her daughter Thomasine who married Thomas Winstead. If she'd had children by Peter Smith, surely she wouldn't have left them out. There's another hint that she's not their mother. The will of Peter Smith in 1717 says "Wife: Dorothy, personalty and use of dwelling plantation during life. No part of her estate to be claimed by Executor as belonging to testator, she having relinquished her dower rights." Sounds to me as if there had probably been a prenuptial agreement to protect Dorothy's estate. Linda Reno 3/16/05
If you want proof of James Gough's wife Elizabeth being married before him, see Maryland Chancery Court Records Liber 2, folio 751. In 1711 the boundary of Richard Vowles's dwelling plantation on St Clement's Bay was disputed. On 28 Sept 1711 two depositions were taken to help resolve this. John Nevitt, aged 70, describes the boundary of Vowles's "Redbudd Thickett" being next to "Rocky Point," both tracts had formerly belonged to his father Richard Nevitt according to this deposition. On the same day, Elizabeth Gough, aged 28, said she had formerly been the wife of George Medcalfe who possessed "Rocky Point," and gave a deposition regarding the land's boundary. The 1707 Rent Rolls show the owner of "Rocky Point" to be Samuel Davis, who had married George Medcalfe's widow, and that he had a life estate in the tract. The 1715 Rent Rolls show John Nevell (sic) Sr. to be possessor of the tract, and later that year he sold it as I mentioned in a previous post. I think she was actually Elizabeth Jarboe, dau. of John Jarboe, Jr. (d. In my opinion, this is Elizabeth (Jarboe ) Medcalf/Davis. For a long time, I thought he might be the son of Thomas Davis and Mary Thomas, but that doesn't work as that Samuel Davis was living as late as 1719." Linda, Just so I got it clear. William Medcalf Jr. married a Susanna ? who was previously married to John Boulds or BOWLES? And this William MEDCALF is the son of William Medcalf Sr. who also married a Susanna ? whose wife later married Ignatius THOMPSON. Is this correct? And what do you think of idea that William Medcalf Sr. married Susanna Heard daughter of John HEARD and Mary GREENWELL. It is possible that Robert Mosley (the elder) may have migrated from Virginia to St. Marys County between 1655-1690. However the evidence suggests that he was the son of Thomas Moseley who landed in St. Marys county in 1669 and died there in 1697. He was reported to be an indentured servant who immigrated to Maryland from England at that time. We do not have a name of his wife. does anyone know the name of his wife? His reported children are: Robert Moseley (1680-1721) wife Barbara Sisson and then second wife Margaret Cooke Were their other children? You said in another post: I agree that Mary Smith m. second, John Johnson and I also have no record of any children for John Medcalf. I then have these Notes not sure who gave them to me: This william or a son William Medcalf was living in Evans Quarter the same location as the John Clarke who married Eleanor ?. Maybe I can add a small piece to the puzzle of Donald Dury's "Downham" with regard to a Robert Ford > John K. Madcalf, son of Jesse Ford's sister Sarah, and Ignatius Madcalf.... actually Medcalf... William Medcalf married Susannah Bowles Greenwell and Ignatius Medcalf married Sarah Ford..... both are the sons of William Medcalf and Susannah Smith. They had another brother named John Medcalf who married Elizabeth French... whose children/grandchildren married Clarkes. I then have these notes from you: William Medcalf had a wife named Susanna, she wasn't Susanna Smith, dau. of Peter. His daughter m. first, John Baptist Buckman (this is a claim put forth by Donnelly and I've found no proof); second, John Bould, Jr.; and third, another William Medcalf (and I don't know who he is) between 1752-1754. So, was she? Agree that John Medcalf was the son of William Medcalf and wife, Susanna. I also agree that his wife was Elizabeth French, but I have her as the daughter of John French (wife's name not known), not Martin French. John French was the son of Martin French and Mary Brown. Will of John French, Sr., SMC 2/19/1767-6/13/1770. First son: John, all land on w. side of Cook's Run and at his decease to grandson, Bennet French; if he dies without heirs, to grandson Barnet French. I have Susanna ____ m. first, John Bowles, Jr. and second, William Medcalf, Jr. I have no third husband. It was William Medcalf, Sr. whose widow Susanna m. second, Ignatius Thompson. Don't know how Peter Peake was related and I don't know who Ann Vincent was. Maybe some other listers can help. Linda Reno ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Jerry, My files agree with everything you have below except that John Medcalf (as well as William Medcalf) was the son of George Medcalf and Elizabeth Jarboe. He was George's son, but not Elizabeth Jarboe's. I have him as George Medcalf and a first, unknown wife. He was born too early to have been Elizabeth's son. John Medcalf was born before 1686 and George Medcalf didn't marry Elizabeth Jarboe until 1698-1702. William Medcalf, Jr. is the one who m. Susanna ____widow of John Bowles, Jr. Linda Reno ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Maybe we are discussing two different John MEDCALF's In Peter SMITH'S will his daughter Mary Married a ? JOHNSON. We know this same Mary SMITH was 1st married to John Medcalf son of George MEDCALF and Elizabeth JARBOE. Is this Correct? John Medcalf 26.252 I SM £17.8.10 Dec 17 1706 Appraisers: Henry Spinke, Edward Spinke. John Medcalf 27.151 A SM £17.8.10 £14.8.1 Jul 8 1707 Received from: William Dalton. Payments to: Benjamin Buckler, Martin French, Elisabeth Smith, Anostaca Langamas, James French, Robert Ford, Jr., Ozwell Thompson. Administratrix: Mary Johnson, wife of John Johnson. Second son: Ignatius, my now dwelling plantation and all remainder of "Hopton Park" but for want of heirs to grandson, Bennet French. 1/2 of personal estate to second son Ignatius French and youngest daughter, Susanna French. Remainder of estate to be divided equally between children: Mary Yates, John French, Elizabeth Medcalf, Monica Davis, Ignatius and Susanna French. Exec: Son, Ignatius. Wit: William Brewer, Elizabeth, Anthony, and Peter Brown. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Linda Reno So Based on this above William MEDCALF married a Susanna ? (not Smith)who was previously married to John BOULDS or John BOWLES. But is the John Medcalf who married Elizabeth FRENCH he is the son of this William MEDCALF who married Susanna ? But Same John Medcalf did not marry also Mary SMITH. 1717 - Smith, Peter, Sr., carpenter,St. Mary's Co.,30th Dec., 1717; 8th Jan., 1717. Right now I have William Medcalf and Susanna ? With son John Medcalf who married Elizabeth FRENCH But I have William Medcalf who married Susanna ? with a brother John Medcalf who married Mary SMITH daughter of Peter SMITH and Eleanor ? Question: Is this William MEDCALF who married Susanna ? did he actually marry Susanna Bowles GREENWELL Who is Susanna Bowles GREENWELL? I don't even know who this is. Did same Susanna ? who married 1st to John BOULD or BOWLES, marry 2nd to William MEDCALF, then third to a ? I have Peter PEAK married 1st to Ann LANGHAM who was previously married to Richard WALKER. Peter Peak married 2nd to Ann EDLOE by 1712, and third to Catherine MEAKINS bet. 1744-1747. So under which wife do I place his children? I have them all under Ann EDLOE is this correct? I have Peter PEAKE Jr. married to Mary HEARD daughter of John HEARD and Mary GREENWELL (daughter of James GREENWELL and Grace Taylor. It's important I get these relationships clear because it's my John CLARKE who married Eleanor ? who is connected somehow to William MEDCALF whose will says his next of Kin is Peter PEAKE, although this might mean Peter PEAKE Jr. not Sr. Did Susanna HEARD (also a daughter of John HEARD and Mary GREENWELL)marry William NEDCALF?
