Linda Reno You Said in reference to Mary Mills (MEDLEY) (WIMSATT): No, she was married only twice--first to Clement Medley and second to Ignatius Wimsatt. Ok. You stated: Sorry, I'm not following. Why does Mary ____wife of Ignatius Medcalf have to be a daughter of Margaret Combs? Also, take this into consideration: My note to Pete Himmelheber, 3/2/2008: 10/1793: Citation against William Holton and Margaret, his wife, Execs. of Matthew Medley. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick). Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Greenwell, Jr. for "Part of No Name", 22 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Solomon Jones for "Part of Hampton", 47 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Part of Hampton", 42 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Dry Docking", 162 1/2 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Drury for "Part of No Name", 77 ac., 9/13/1796 (Chr. of SM). In other words, Mary MILLS MEDLEY has outlived all of her sons. She settles with her daughter-in-law Margaret (Combs) and transfers Matthew's share of the property. The daughters, as usually happened, received personal estate at the time of their marriages. Linda Reno I have no problem understanding that Mary MILLS MEDLEY transfers Matthew Medley's share of the property to his wife Margaret COMBS. And I suppose Margaret COMBS Medley may just have sold the land, she got from her mother in law Mary MILLS (MEDLEY) Let me explain some of my thinking. Margaret COMBS daughter of (William Combs and Mary Eleanor Taney)marries Mathew Medley son of Clement Medley and Mary MILLS, she marries 2nd to William HOLTON(don't have any details on him)and third Phillip NORRIS. So in these first two deeds the Same Margaret Combs once as married to Phillip Norris, and Once as married to William HOLTON is doing a land deal with Ignatius Medcalf and wife Mary ? Maybe there is no connection and maybe Margaret COMBS (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS)is just selling her land. All the other Deeds Ignatius Medcalf and wife Mary ? are selling some of the same land, thy either bought, or inherited by (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) But it would seem logical that since Margaret COMBS had three husbands she likely had children from one of them. It seems to me there might be a possibility that Mary ? wife of Ignatius Medcalf, might be a daughter of Margaret COMBS by one of her husbands. And Personally I believe it was from her 1st husband Mathew MEDLEY. Maybe there is no documention to prove Margaret COMBS (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) had any children by any husband. I currently have no children for Margaret Combs by any of her husbands. In both of these Deeds involving Ignatius Medcalf and wife Mary ? Margaret Combs is involved Deed to Philip Norris from Ignatius Medcalf and wife, "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796 (Chr.of SM). Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Now this deed to Charles Gregory GREENWELL married three times. 1st to Monica WILLIAMS, 2nd to Elizabeth A. COMBS, and third to Priscilla MEDLEY Elizabeth A. Combs was a daughter of Enoch Combs and Ann Roach. And this Enoch Combs a son of Enoch Combs and Mary Manning. The Enoch Combs who married Mary Manning was a brother to William Combs who married Mary Eleanor TANEY, parents of Margaret COMBS(MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) So Margaret Combs (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) is related to Elizabeth A. Combs wife of Charles Gregory GREENWELL Deed from Philip and Margaret Norris to Charles G. Greenwell for "Hampton",30 ac.,6/26/1798 (Chr.of SM).Chr. of SM. On these three deeds below I don't know which Phillip Ford this is or who he married. Same with who John Greenwell is or who he married. I have three Solomon Jones. One who married Ann FENWICK, another who married Monica Van RESWICK, and another Solomon JONES who married Catherine BURNS Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Part of Hampton", 42 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Greenwell, Jr. for "Part of No Name", 22 ac. 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Solomon Jones for "Part of Hampton",47 ac., 9/13/1796. So I guess My question is, did Ignatius and Mary Medcalf just buy this land >From Margaret COMBS (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) or was it passed along to a daughter. I'm pretty sure Ignatius Medcalf has no relationship to Margaret COMBS (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS), unless it be through his wife Mary. Keep in mind this same Ignatius Medcalf married 2nd to Elizabeth "Betsy" Combs whose Ancestry follows a different Combs line, but one likely related more distantly to Margaret COMBS (MEDLEY)(HOLTON)(NORRIS) If there is no Proof then I guess my reasoning has no merit, but I just bring it up just in case we are overlooking a possible clue.
No, she was married only twice--first to Clement Medley and second to Ignatius Wimsatt. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Drury for "Part of No Name", 77 ac., 9/13/1796 (Chr. of SM). When you did your input to your database, did you do it from this record? The reason I ask is because I've come to believe it's wrong. I think this land was being sold by Ignatius Wimsatt and wife, Mary (Mills) Medley, widow of Clement. Clement died in 1771and in 1772 Mary marries Ignatius Wimsatt. Between 1772-1796, her son Bennet dies in 1774; last record of her daughter Eleanor is in 1784; the second daughter named Eleanor has married Jeremiah Tarlton and they will go to KY shortly; no record of son Joseph after 1783; son Matthew died in 1788, leaving widow Margaret; daughter Ann Elizabeth is dead; and Mary has married John Baptist Gough and moved to KY. In other words, Mary has outlived all of her sons. She settles with her daughter-in-law Margaret (Combs) and transfers Matthew's share of the property. Jerry, I believe the Charles Joy who m. Elizabeth French, widow of John Medcalf, was the son of Enoch Joy and Tecla Drury. Charles Joy (d. 1779) son of Peter Joy, Jr. and Ann Stone is the one who m. _____Goldsborough, daughter of Robert Goldsborough and Elizabeth Seale. She wasn't Margaret Goldsborough--she m. John Swales. Looks like the Howard-Medcalf connection goes back to the Smith family. Linda Reno Descendants of Peter Smith, Jr. Generation No. 1 1. PETER2 SMITH, JR. Linda Reno No I didn't have this information below. But did have this note: Now, Nicholas Mills, Jr. (-1700 to 1768) had a daughter named Mary Mills who m. first, Clement Medley before 1753 and second, Ignatius Wimsatt on 12/31/1772. [linda reno] So are you saying that Clement Medley's wife Mary Mills remarried to Ignatius Wimsatt, then Ignatius MEDCALF? When you did your input to your database, did you do it from this record? The reason I ask is because I've come to believe it's wrong. I think this land was being sold by Ignatius Wimsatt and wife, Mary (Mills) Medley, widow of Clement. Clement died in 1771 and in 1772 Mary marries Ignatius Wimsatt. The daughters, as usually happened, received personal estate at the time of their marriages. Linda Reno ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Linda Reno, Since we know that Margaret COMBS daughter of (William Combs and Mary Eleanor TANEY ) married Mathew MEDLEY, William HOLTON and Phillip NORRIS And since we have determined that this Ignatius MEDCALF was the son of (John MEDCALF and Elizabeth FRENCH)and since he married both Mary ? and Elizabeth "Betsy" COMBS It would seem to me that Mary ? wife of Ignatius MEDCALF was a daughter of Margaret COMBS daughter of (William Combs and Mary Eleanor TANEY )who married Mathew MEDLEY, William HOLTON and Phillip NORRIS. But from which husband? Deed to Philip Norris from Ignatius Medcalf and wife, "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796 (Chr.of SM). Deed from Philip and Margaret Norris to Charles G. Greenwell for "Hampton",30 ac.,6/26/1798 (Chr.of SM).Chr. of SM. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Greenwell, Jr. for "Part of No Name", 22 ac. 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Solomon Jones for "Part of Hampton",47 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Part of Hampton", 42 ac., 9/13/1796. * 26 Jul 1813 p. 809 Wm Coombs "in consideration of the natural love & affection which he hath for the said Betsy Coombs his Daughter " conveys a tract containing 110 acres lying on Cany Fork of Coxes Creek and being a part of the one thousand acres granted to Wm in a Treasury warrant. So since Elizabeth Betsy Combs was 2nd wife of Ignatius MEDCALF and since her father was a William COMBS who married Jane Frances GREENLEAF, this William COMBS a son of Thomas COMBS and Elizabeth WHARTON. This William Combs died 1824 in Nelson County, KY
Norma, I'm probably not going to be of much help on this. First, I think that Edward Moller and Edward Miller are the same man. Edward Miller's wife's name was Mary and not Jane. The 1703 accounts show a payment to Jane Greenhalgh, dau. of Capt. Greenhalgh. They then show a payment to the wife of Edward Moller and to the wife of Thomas Rose. The christian names aren't given. It's just too coincidental that Edward and Mary Miller happen to witness the will of John Watson; not to mention Jane Rose, the third witness. 6/8/1696: Admin. accts. of Emmanuel Pitcher, SMC. Admx.: Jane Rose, wife of Thomas. Mentions: ____Walton (could this be John Watson?) and Edward Miller. Will of John Watson, SMC, 6/21/1696-4/15/1699. Brother-in-law, Thomas Mittford and to Thomas his son and to Robert, son of Robert Graham, personal estate. To: John, son of Capt. Edward Greenhalgh, 200 ac., pt. of "New Bottle", P.G. Co. To: Thomas, son of Capt. Edward Greenhalgh, residue of "New Bottle". Wife: Jane (Exec.) residuary legatee of estate, real and personal. Wit: Edward Miller, Mary Miller, Jane Rose. That means that Jane Greenhalgh was married to Thomas Spink and then to John Watson. She wasn't married to Edward Moller/Miller. I have to assume that it was Mary Greenhalgh, daughter of Capt. Edward, who married Edward Miller. The widow of Capt. Greenhalgh married second, Garvis Cuttler if Louise Donnelly was correct. Thomas Haddock administered both the estate of John Watson and the estate of Capt. Edward Greenhalgh on the same day. The Captain's widow had married secondly, Garvis Cuttler (Acct. 24:22). It is amazing as I continue my research on the descendants of my 9th great grandparents, Edwin Conway that married Martha Eltonhead on what I am finding. It goes on down to Richard Moncure Conway son of Walker Peyton Conway and Margaret Eleanor Daniel. I have Daniel and Vivion grandparents also. Intermarriages include from Md of Thomas Stone, Brown, Jenifer, Fowke and Hoskins plus other lines in Westmoreland and Stafford counties in Va. I guess it pays to check out the rest of the family instead of staying with direct grandparents. LOL ! Marianne Dillow
