Margaret Combs did have at least one child and that was by Matthew Medley. She was Mary Ann Walbert Medley. Will of Matthew Medley, SMC, 4/1788-6/3/1788. Wife: Margaret Medley, all of my lands including "Dry Docking" and "No Name" during her life and widowhood and one third of my personal estate. Daughter: Mary Ann Walbert Medley, the land above and two thirds of my personal estate after the death of my wife. Execs.: Wife, Margaret Medley, and William Combs. Wit.: Bennet Combs, Catherine Nottingham, Barbara Riley. NOTE: William Combs renounced executorship of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1776-1791 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). There is no further mention of Mary Ann Walbert Medley anywhere and I have to assume she died young. She could not have been born until at least 1786 as Matthew Medley was born in 1766 and Margaret Combs was born in 1764. Ignatius Medcalf was married to Mary ____prior to 1788. Whoever she was, she was born before 1773--and she is surely not Mary Ann Walbert Medley. Any other children that Margaret Combs had would still have been too young to have married Ignatius Medcalf, but my contention is she had none that lived to adulthood. The land was sold. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. My problem is, how do we know it was John Johnson of David? That's why I haven't assigned this marriage to him. I had two children assigned to John Johnson of David (Joseph and Charles), both I had born prior to 1800, but after going over the records this morning again, I have decided they were Clarissa Walker's sons and born later than I originally supposed. 11/12/1841: Deed from John Johnson of David for natural love and affection to my three sons Charles, Henry, and Joseph Johnson all my negroes, horses, cattle, and stock of every description, bills, bonds, securities, and other evidences of debt, farming utensils, crops on hand at the time of my death, all household and kitchen furniture and every other description of property whether, real, personal, or mixed except one negro girl named Louisa, 2 beds and furniture which I give to my grandchildren George Alexander Yates and Ally Maria Yates, and $100 I give to my grandchild, Elizabeth Johnson to be held by my son Charles and by him paid over to her as she may be in want of it. I also reserve the bed and furniture which I use from the above mentioned property. Wit.: George W. Gibson. Recorded 11/12/1841. (St. Mary's County Deeds, JH 12, 259). Just three days after executing the above deed, John Johnson m. Elizabeth Drury. Will of Charles Johnson, SMC, 5/12/1845-6/10/1845. Nephew: George Alexander Yates, $100. Niece: Ally Maria Yates, $100. Niece: Elizabeth Johnson, $100. To: St. Joseph's and Newtown Churches, $25 each. Brother: Joseph Johnson, a note of hand of $200 and another one of $30. The residue of my property including all of my right, title, and claim to the property conveyed to me by bill of sale from my father as well as any property that may be left to me by my father at his death is to be equally divided between my brother, Joseph Johnson (one half) and the children of my brother, Henry Johnson (one half). Exec.: Brother, Joseph Johnson. Wit.: George W. Gibson, Charles Nevitt. NOTE: Henry Johnson, a brother of the deceased, did not object to the probate of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1836-1857 by Linda Reno). This is the will of John Johnson (of David) who made a will despite the deed above. Will of John Johnson (of David), SMC, 4/23/1850-10/12/1852. Wife: Elizabeth Johnson, one bed, bedstead, and furniture. She is to also have all of the beds, bedding, and furniture that she has made or purchased since the time of our marriage and $440. Exec.: Wife, Elizabeth Johnson. Wit.: John F. Dent, Albert Burch. NOTE: Joseph Johnson and Henry Johnson, two of the sons of the deceased, did not object to the probate of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1836-1857 by Linda Reno). Henry Johnson died in 1853. He was the only one of the three sons to leave issue, although there may have been another son who was the father of Elizabeth Johnson. Right now, I have Elizabeth under Henry Johnson, but it's probably wrong. Joseph Johnson (who I knew from these documents was still living as late as 1852) died in 1871. His wife, Ruth Ann Alvey, had died in May 1871. He had no living children at the time of his death. Will of Joseph Johnson, St. Mary's Co., 9/11/1871-12/7/1871; Legacies to George F. Tennison, Ann Shercliffe Tennison Bailey, John J. Bailey, William T. Bailey, Mrs. Mary E. Mattingly's heirs, Mrs. Ann C. Hutchinson's heirs, and to William F. Leach. (Transcribed by Linda Reno). The legatees named above are his relations via his mother, Clarissa Walker who had been married first to Francis Xavier Shercliffe. So--bottom line, I'm not convinced that John Johnson (of David) was married more than twice. First to Clarissa (Walker) Shercliffe and second, to Elizabeth Drury. Revised report follows. Mike and List, According to my files, Margaret Cartwright, daughter of John Cartwright, Jr. and Elizabeth Greenfield, was married first to Charles Ashcom bef. 1766 and by him she had a son named John Cartwright Ashcom. Margaret's second husband was her cousin, John Cartwright, son of William Cartwright and Dorothy Keech (Dorothy Keech m. second, Robert Hammett). John Cartwright and Margaret Cartwright had three children: 1. William Cartwright. Eldest child and he was guardian to the two children below until his own death in 1797. Will of William Cartwright, Montgomery Co., 3/26/1794-3/6/1797. Brother: Henry Greenfield Cartwright, 1 negro man named Joe. Sister: Julia Cartwright, a negro named Bob. Aunt: Elizabeth Courts, a negro named Charles; if she dies without issue living, the negro is devised to my sister, Julia. To: My brother and sister, any land I have at my death or may have title to, equally divided. Exec.: Nathaniel Ewing of SMC. Wit.: Stephen Balch, Charles A. Beatty, Richard Forrest. 2. Henry Greenfield Sothoron Cartwright m. Susanna Walters (also from St. Mary's Co.), 15 Feb 1804 in Frederick Co., VA. 1820, Frederick Co., VA: Henry G. Cartwright. 1830, Frederick Co., VA: Henry G. Cartwright. 1850, Parkersburg, District 65, Wood Co., VA: John Cartwright, 45, miller; Mary, 34; Henry, 19, laborer; Susan, 15; Mary E., 14; Julia, 13; James W., 16; Henry, 64; Susan, 64. All b. VA. 3. Julia Ann Cartwright who m. Lewis Mahany, 08 Dec 1812 in Frederick Co., VA. Lewis Mahony was living in Pugh, Frederick Co., VA in 1820; in 1830 there was a Lewis Mahaney listed in Zanesville, OH; 1840, Lewis Mahaney, Licking Co., OH. No luck after that. I don't know how Benjamin Suite comes into play. I can think of two possibilities. Benjamin's wife was named Mildred (no surname) and his mother was named Eleanor (no surname). That's probably how there's a connection, but until we find the maiden names for these ladies, we're out of luck. Linda Reno, Since John JOHNSON died in 1852, and Elizabeth DRURY died in Dec 1869 Do we have them both on the 1850 Census, and her on 1860 Census? Perhaps this has been given before, but I don't have it. It would be nice to have the documentation to prove his and her age. I have her as Elizabeth DRURY. Was she a Mary Elizabeth DRURY?. I have no parents for her. Have we located her parents or siblings?
Linda, Was Elizabeth Drury married more than once? I have an Elizabeth Drury (b. 1807/8) d/o Peter Drury (b. 1771) married 2/9/1831 to William Abell. Hi Tom I can't say that John the Sheriff wasn't married to a Margaret at sometime, but at the time of his death his wife was named Elizabeth. The first acct of Elizabeth, widow of John Cartwright of SMC deceased, was done 12 Dec 1797. I can't give the libre and page, but I have a copy of the original. a William Cartwright was appointed as guardian to Henry Greenfield Cartwright and Julian Cartwright sons of John Cartwright , wife Elizabeth Keech in April 1794 reports they were less than 14 yrs of age. This William Cartwright also had a wife named Elizabeth, but from the way the guardianship is phrased, I finally concluded that Elizabeth Keech was the wife of John and mother of the children. later Elizabeth Keech Cartwright is in financial difficulty because John the Sheriff owed money to the state: -------------- WEDNESDAY, November 13, 1805. WHEREAS John Sanders, Nathaniel Washington and Elizabeth K. Cartwright, of Saint-Mary's county; James Cook, Isaac Younger ------- Elizabeth K Cartwright died sometime before 22 Dec 1846 in SMC. John Cartwright who died before 1755 married Elizabeth Greenfield. The widow Elizabeth married John Hammett and does not mention a John Cartwright as an orphan child in the John d 1755 account, however, with John the sheriff naming a son Henry Greenfield, I have placed John for now (without much proof) as a son John Cartwright and Elizabeth Greenfield.
