Thank you for the help. I thought that Edward Miller and Edward Moller were the same person, too. I've also suspected that the "mentions" in Emmanuel Pitcher's admin account were probably John Walton and Edward Moller/Miller, also. When I could still look at microfilm and see anything, the microfilm definitely looks like John Walton when you think it says that (Grin). It is confusing to have Jane called "Greenhalgh" at that late date, too. Although, admin accounts can mention payments made/received many years past -- long after the people have married or died. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Reno" <lindareno@comcast.net> To: "Norma Lundgren" <nlndgrn@sbcglobal.net>; <mdstmary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 8:37 AM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Medcalf(e)/Metcalf(e) > Norma, > > I'm probably not going to be of much help on this. > > First, I think that Edward Moller and Edward Miller are the same man. > Edward Miller's wife's name was Mary and not Jane. John Johnson III, son of John Johnson, Jr. and wife, Eleanor died in 1781. He married Catherine Power who survived him and died in 1789. His will, dated 12/2/1780 named his wife Catherine and brother, Leonard as his executors. Linda Reno ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. But it appears to me the John JOHNSON who married Eleanor SMITH is more likely the brother of the Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary HOWARD. She states on her web page: John leaving the land known as "Peters Wells" to his wife Eleanor in his will probated on April 23, 1767. Apparently then it passed into the hands of Mile Johnson. He then deeded it to his brother Thomas as recorded in the St. Mary's Chronicles, Transfers and Alienations. As was usual in that time apparently his wife was only given a life estate, meaning that she could only own the land during her lifetime and could not will the land to someone else or sell it. I have no dates on him, or his children. I also don't have apparently all of his children and their marriages. Since I have no real dates on David JOHNSON or this Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary HOWARD, I don't know if they could be brothers. Don, Unfortunately, I think we're both guessing as to the children of Peter Drury. I've never found any administration accounts, wills, or other documents that would indicate exactly who they were. He may be the same Peter Drury that married Ann Hayden and then Mary Cox, but I don't know for sure. 1. Benedict Drury. All I have is the date of his marriage to Susan Fowler. 2. Susan Drury. All I have is the marriage to John Walter Beaven. Agree she was born in 1798 and have the same death date. 3. Mary Drury. Marcellus Simpson was m. to Mary Drury, but no way of knowing if she was Peter's daughter. In case you don't have this: 7/17/1851: Death. In this city, yesterday (7/16/1851), Mr. Marcellus Simpson, in the 52nd year of his age. His funeral will take place from the residence of Louis Marceron, on Pennsylvania Ave., near the Navy Yard, this evening at 4 o'clock. The friends and relatives of the family are respectfully invited to attend. (Daily National Intelligencer, Marriage and Death Notices, 1854-1854, Pippenger). 4. Cornelius Drury. He m. Mary Dunbar, but I don't think she was Mary Ann Dunbar, dau. of John Dunbar and Frances Abell. Agree with the second and third marriages. 5. William Drury. I do have him placed as a son of Peter based on this: I have placed him in this family because I believe Margaret is his dau. and the niece of Mary Drury Abell and cousin of Peter Drury, but he could be the son of Clement Drury. In 1870, Margaret Drury was living with Mary (Drury) Abell, widow of William S. L. Abell. In 1900, Margaret was listed in the home of Joseph Benjamin Drury as a cousin (JB Drury was the son of William H. Drury and Martha Dyer). 6. I have no record of a Bennet Drury. 7. Ann Drury, who you place as the daughter of Peter Drury and Ann Hayden. The dates don't work. They weren't married until 1/23/1816 and she was born 3/12/1810. The Ann Drury who married John Beatley was born in 1798. Below are records that Tom Jennings and I have collected: 1850, 1st Ward, Baltimore: 70 80 Joseph Beatty 22 M Segar Maker Alexandria, Va 1 70 80 Celestra Beatty 24 F St.Marys Co. Md (Note: This is Ann Celestia Sanner, dau. of John Dunbar Sanner and Ann Caroline Drury who m. Robert S. Beatley) 1 70 80 Thomas Beatty 24 M Carpenter Alexandria, Va 1 70 80 Robert S Beatty 28 M Carpenter Alexandria, Virginia 1 70 80 Ann Beatty 49 F St. Marys Co., Md I think this might be Ann Drury who wed John Beatley July 22, 1818. *Beacon 2/20/1896- Robert S. Suddenly on the 21st instant, at 3 1/2 P.M. of congestion of the brain, Mrs. Ann Beetley, consort of the late Capt. John Beetley, aged 74 years. May she rest in peace. (St. Mary's Beacon and Washington, D.C. papers please copy). (Baltimore Sun, 8/22/1872). 8/23/1872: Died. Beetley. Suddenly on the 21st instant, at 3 1/2 P.M. of congestion of the brain. Mrs. Ann Beetley, consort of the late Capt. John Beetley, aged 74 years. The friends of the family are requested to attend her funeral this (Friday) afternoon at five o'clock, from her late residence, No. 242 Eastern Avenue. 8. Peter Drury and Ann Hayden had two daughters named Rebecca. The first one was born 1816-1819 and died in February 1819. They then had a daughter named Rebecca who was born February 7, 1820 "baptized by her father on the day of her birth" according to Jesuit Missions. I would have to believe this Rebecca also died and that's why her father's baptism was allowed to stand. The Rebecca Drury who m. Samuel Wise was born about 1815. Her age remained pretty consistent throughout the censuses. I don't think she was Peter's daughter. Linda Reno, Is their more than one John JOHNSON who married an Eleanor SMITH? http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=1159&id=I10384 This Web site Claims Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary Howard was a son of some John JOHNSON who died abt 1744 and left a will, and married an Eleanor She states on her web site she was Eleanor SMITH. To son John and hrs., tract at head of Bretan's Bay, formerly belonging to Peter Smeth. To son William and hrs., tract bought of Peter Smeth (having a judgment in court for it, and cannot possess it until James Persons is of age). To son Ignatius and sons afsd., personalty, afsd. lands and personalty to be delivered to four sons as they come to age of 21. To wife Susannah, extx., residue of estate. Test: Thomas Wootton, John Howard, Margret Dun. 20. 889. So, the above William Madcalf had sons: George, John, William and Ignatius and they were all under 21 when he wrote his will in 1733. Let's look at the sons of William d 1733 individually ........... CHILDREN OF WILLIAM MADCALF ............ 1) GEORGE MEDCALF: We know no more of the George Medcalf mentioned in the above will --- or do we? Likely he remained in St. Mary's and inherited the homestead due to laws or primogeniture. [Probably he married a Spink] I believe George Medcalf and this one to be the same: Will of Peter Peake, SMC 10/28/1755-2/16/1756. Wife: Catherine, all the land and plantation that I possess. Daughter: Susanna Peake a cow, bed, etc. Children: John, Peter, Ignatius, Susanna Peake and Anastasia Brown, the remainder of my personal estate. Wife: Exec. Wit: William Russell, Thomas Thompson, GEORGE MEDCALF. [Note the name Kenelm runs in this line of Peakes......] 2) IGNATIUS MEDCALF: Nor do we know anything about this Ignatius. Why could he not be this Ignatius Medcalf of Hampton & No Name? Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Margaret Holton for "Part of Hampton", 30 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Greenwell, Jr. for "Part of No Name", 22 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Solomon Jones for "Part of Hampton", 47 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Part of Hampton", 42 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to Philip Ford for "Dry Docking", 162 1/2 ac., 9/13/1796. Deed from Ignatius and Mary Medcalf to John Drury for "Part of No Name", 77 ac., 9/13/1796 (Chr. of SM). Note: Solomon Jones is mentioned in the Will of Patrick Burne (Burn), planter, St. Mary's Co., 12/13/1737-1/16/1737-38. See Linda Reno's analysis of the Miles-Holtons here: _http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MDSTMARY/2006-03/1142433372_ (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MDSTMARY/2006-03/1142433372) 3) WILLIAM MEDCALF: William quite likely married Elizabeth Bould, widow of John Boulds, Jr. : 2 Dec 1754. Administrative account of the estate of John BOULD, of St. Mary’ s Co. Numerous individuals are listed including received from Thomas HOWARD, Henry HOWARD, Thomas NORRISE, Clement NORRISS, Ozwell THOMPSON, John Baptist GREENWELL, payments to John Baptist CARBARY. Executrix: Susannah BOULD, now wife of William MADCALF. (Abstracts of the Administration Accounts of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers 29-36, 1750-1754, by V.L. Skinner, Jr., Willow Bend Books, 2000, p. 173.) William Medcalf was still alive in 1761 evidenced by the will of John Basil Greenwell: 10 Sept 1761. Will of John Basil GREENWELL, St. Mary's Co., 10 Sept. 1761, 13 Oct 1761. To son Joshua GREENWELL, 100 A. called Evans Quarter, whereon I now dwell, after wife Eleanor GREENWELL dies, and in case of no such hrs., then to son James GREENWELL and hrs., and in case no issue, then to Richard Langhorn CLARK, son-in-law, to him forever. To sone James GREENWELL, tract whereon WM. MEDCALF now dwells, called Pil's Wood Lane, 200 a., and if he die without issue to son Joshua GREENWELL. To son Joshua GREENWELL, some slaves. To son James GREENWELL, slaves to dau-in-law (unnamed) and son-in law Richard CLARK, 100 lbs. Tobacco. Extx: Wife. Wit. Monia MEDLEY, Mary NORRIS, James PIKE. (Will Book 31, p. 498.) 4) JOHN MEDCALF.. likely married Elizabeth French. Will of John French, Sr., SMC 2/19/1767-6/13/1770. First son: John, all land on w. side of Cook's Run and at his decease to grandson, Bennet French; if he dies without heirs, to grandson Barnet French. Second son: Ignatius, my now dwelling plantation and all remainder of "Hopton Park" but for want of heirs to grandson, Bennet French. 1/2 of personal estate to second son Ignatius French and youngest daughter, Susanna French. Remainder of estate to be divided equally between children: Mary Yates, John French, ELIZABETH MEDCALF, Monica Davis, Ignatius and Susanna French. Exec: Son, Ignatius.Wit: William Brewer, Elizabeth, Anthony, and Peter Brown. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). Note: "Hopton Park," 2100 acres surveyed for John Vowle's brother-in-law Cuthbert Scott in 1680, is just north of several tracts of land that belonged to the family of Richard Vowles. Chronicles of St. Mary's, Vol. XXI, No. 5 (May 1973). . 5) OTHERS: Margaret Dun/Dunn is quite likely connected to Benjamin Dunn thru marriage. Was she not a Ford? Susannah Dunn, her daughter was left two slaves by Robert Ford who married Margaret Unknown: Liber 29, folio 88 --- ------- 1753 FORD, ROBERT, [St.Mary's Co.] To wife, Teresia Ford, for life, my dw. plntn.& all lands, & on her d., to grdson Joseph Fenwick, & in default of heirs, to grddau. Daughter: Mary Ann Walbert Medley, the land above and two thirds of my personal estate after the death of my wife. Execs.: Wife, Margaret Medley, and William Combs. Wit.: Bennet Combs, Catherine Nottingham, Barbara Riley. NOTE: William Combs renounced executorship of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1776-1791 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). There is no further mention of Mary Ann Walbert Medley anywhere and I have to assume she died young. She could not have been born until at least 1786 as Matthew Medley was born in 1766 and Margaret Combs was born in 1764. Ignatius Medcalf was married to Mary ____prior to 1788. Whoever she was, she was born before 1773--and she is surely not Mary Ann Walbert Medley. Any other children that Margaret Combs had would still have been too young to have married Ignatius Medcalf, but my contention is she had none that lived to adulthood. The land was sold. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Linda Reno Can you post what you have concerning the Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary HOWARD? I have no dates on him, or his children. I also don't have apparently all of his children and their marriages. Mary Yoder has asked the question to me, was this Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary HOWARD a brother to David JOHNSON of St. Mary's County, Maryland. Since I have no real dates on David JOHNSON or this Leonard JOHNSON who married Mary HOWARD, I don't know if they could be brothers. Ernie, The Ignatius Medcalf (son of William Medcalf and Susanna SMITH?)married Sarah FORD. It was John Medcalf his brother who married Elizabeth FRENCH that are the parents of the Ignatius Medcalf who married Mary ? and Elizabeth Betsy COMBS. But My question is. What Ties the Ignatius Medcalf of Hampton who married a Mary ? as being the same Ignatius Medcalf who married Elizabeth "Betsy Combs? I have not seen that proof. There is still another Ignatius Medcalf Who I have that married a Mary French who had a son Ignatius Medcalf Jr. who married Agnes Catherine Huff or HOUGH daughter of Aaron HOUGH and Ann Nancy Combs. Problem is I have no proof of this Ignatius Medcalf marriage to Mary French. And Ann Nancy COMBS who married Aaron Hough. I'm showing as the sister of the Elizabeth Betsy COMBS who married 2nd to Ignatius Medcalf who was Previously married to a Mary ? and supposedly was the son of John Medcalf and Elizabeth FRENCH. It would make more since that the Ann Nancy COMBS who married Aaron Hough whose daughter Agnes Catherine HOUGH or Huff, who married Ignatius COMBS JR. that his Father would be the Ignatius Combs who married Elizabeth "Betsy" COMBS. That way Ignatius Combs Jr. would be marrying his 1st cousin. Obviously we have some errors. I have not studied these Medcalf's enough to link them all. Will of Matthew Medley, SMC, 4/1788-6/3/1788. Wife: Margaret Medley, all of my lands including "Dry Docking" and "No Name" during her life and widowhood and one third of my personal estate. Linda, You wrote: I have Mary Elizabeth Drury m. William S. L. Abell. He died in 1859 and she was still living in 1870. It's not the same girl. I haven't found anything to indicate that Elizabeth had been married before. This has me a little confused as I also have a Mary Drury who would have been her sister married to Marcellus Simpson.
