Hopefully, it isn't too delayed by the Christmas mail. It featured an 8 page FENWICK genealogy by Pat Obrist. I did a review of "American Resting Place" - an excellent book of the history of cemeteries & burial grounds in the United States over the last 400 years. Bill Mitchell had an article on the 1918 Spanish Flu and other of his "Gathering the Facts" column. We also had a feature on the 200th anniversary of the Bardstown Diocese in Kentucky. I would like to see some folks from the List at our Society's party - to get to know those who I don't know. Linda - Just based on the dates of the marriage of Nicholas to Margaret Read, should the last child James be theirs instead of Nicholas and Elizabeth's? Or do we have some reason to place him with Elizabeth and should his birth date be earlier? I haven't gone all through this site, but she does have the parents of Ignatius Greenwell wrong. She says he was the son of George Greenwell and Mary Ann Wheatley. He was the son of George Greenwell and Elizabeth Mills. At least I got the SMC connection I was seeking. This all started this morning when I found a newspaper article from The New York Times and another newspaper in 1888 where Mrs. Jennie Greenwell shot and killed her husband, Robert Greenwell because she was jealous. One article said that Robert was the son of Judge Robert Greenwell. The other said he was the son of Judge Joseph Greenwell (which is correct). This happened in Grand Tower, IL. Ann, wife of Joseph Greenwell, may have been a daughter of Dr. Joseph James who was living with the family in 1850. He was born in Charles County in 1779 and was the son of Thomas James and Ann "Nancy" Williams. Norma Lundgren has the will of George on her website and lists the children as - Children: Ann Greenwelll, Elisabeth Greenwell, Mary Ann Newton, John Greenwell, Nicholas Greenwell, Ignatius Greenwell, Joseph Greenwell, Justinian Greenwell, Bennet Greenwell St Mary's County Maryland Wills, Liber JJ No. 1, 1777-1791 written 1782, probated 1785. This generally agrees with what I had but if I count right that is 9 kids and I have 10. I also have an Austin Greenwell b. about 1765 and married to an Elizabeth (last name unknown). I note that Norma also lists Austin in another list - so I'm not sure about whether or not he really belongs there. Thoughts? Of Course!! Didn't read far enough!! Catherine "Arena" BOWLES m. Kenelum MURPHY. Their daughter Louisa Jane MURPHY m. Peter JARBOE. John Madison ABELL, son of John Henry ABELL and Dorothy BOWLES, m. Rebecca Hazlett NELMS, a widow, in Christian Co, IL, in 1859. In 1870, he got "Texas fever", left his family behind and never returned. He married twice more and had a second family, without any sign of divorce. In 1877 in Christian County, IL, Rebecca Hazlett Nelms ABELL married (3rd try!), to Peter JARBOE, widower, from Marion Co KY - who had previously been married to John Madison's first cousin! She had no better luck. Around 1880 he also took off for TX, and it's been passed down he started off with John's 10-yr old twin sons in tow, perhaps taking them to their father? A neighbor is said to have persuaded him to let the boys return home - as one of the twins was my grt-grandfather, I'm grateful!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beth Jones" <bjones@npoint.net> To: <ddrury5840@sbcglobal.net>; <mdstmary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] John Bowles >I daon't have my Bowles and Raley files handy. Correction: Louisa BOWLES married William MURPHY, son William MURPHY Jr, not BLAND!! I knew this, but while typing it was trying to think if sister Monica married a BLAND, and, well, when 2 trains are traveling on a single track there's bound to be a disaster!! I daon't have my Bowles and Raley files handy. Alethaire "Ally" Raley and Joseph BOWLES had daughters Dorothy ca. 1807, Aloysia (Louisa), Monica, and Catherine, I believe, was youngest - correct me if I'm wrong. Louisa married Wm. BLAND, had a son Wm BLAND, Jr, was widowed on 1850 Marion Co census. Didn't Catherine marry a Murphy as well, and move to IN? I know Monica married, but not when or who from the material at hand. Dorothy BOWLES m. John Henry ABELL, b. ca. 1807, 21 Jan 1825 Marion Co KY, son of Enoch ABELL and Elizabeth PIERCEALL. Dorothy d. ca. 1845, possibly following childbirth. The children were dispersed among various relatives. John Henry ABELL remarried ca. 1848 Mary Ann TUNGATE b. ca 1821 Green Co. KY, dau of Wiliam TUNGATE and Patience BRYANT, d. ca. 1910 Marion Co KY Interestingly, Alethair Bowles signed the marriage license request for her daughter, and "Guardian for Dorothy Bowles" beneath her signature. ----- Original Message ----- From: "donald drury" <ddrury5840@sbcglobal.net> To: <mdstmary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2009 11:07 PM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] John Bowles > Thanks to everyone for your input. > > I think the parents for Sarah have to be John Bowles and Elizabeth Payne. > > Don Drury > > --- On Wed, 1/14/09, K. If anyone knows about this John Bodine (or the surety, Robert N. Bodine), please let me know. I descend from Cornelius Bodine of Loudon Co., VA; some of his descendants wound up in Nelson and Meade Co., KY. It's not that common a surname (Jethro of the Beverly Hillbillies notwithstanding), but I don't have this John placed. Thanks! Linda Reno, I'm open to thoughts anyone might have on this below. Or if you can add to this. Clemency JUPIN (daughter of John Jupin and Eleanor ?) married Elijah Wright she was a sister to Elizabeth JUPIN who married Charles MEDCALF. Sophia Jupin her sister married Charles Donahue, whose brother was Daniel Donahue who married Ann "Nancy" Cambron Daniel and Charles Donahue have a sister Martha "Patsy" Donahue who married Osborn BLAND who I believe was the son of Osborn Bland and Leatice ? Samuel McADAMS married Sarah HAGAN daughter of James HAGAN and Monica JOHNSON Samuel McADAMS and Sarah Hagan's son Alexander McADAMS married Catherine JUPIN sister of Elizabeth JUPIN (MEDCALF) Their daughter Mary McADAMS married Micheal SUMMERS. Their son David McADAMS married Rebecca HINTON Another sister Eleanor JUPIN married John RITCHIE whose daughter Jemima Ritchie married Lewis LEMASTER son of Hugh Lemaster and Mary JUPIN also a sister of Eleanor JUPIN(RITCHIE) Jacob KING married Ann ABELL daughter of Charles ABELL and Elizabeth CRAWFORD Ann Abell (KING) sister was Elizabeth ABELL who married Ignatuis BROWN son of Nicholas BROWN and Appolonia THOMPSON, she married 2nd to William NEWTON son of Thomas NEWTON and Susanna HOWARD What I'm noticing here is that it appears to me that John Kenelm Medcalf who married Winifred PAYNE could very well be the brother of Charles Medcalf who married Elizabeth Jupin Their ages are 10 years apart. I realize that is not how most people have it, but I think my placement might be closer to the truth. Open to discussion on this. Most People are trying to Claim Charles Medcalf was a son of William Medcalf and Susanna Smith, that's not possible, so others have placed him under William Medcalf Jr. and Susanna ? but once again I don't think that is correct either. The Association in Kentucky is mind boggling between John Kenelm Medcalf and Charles Medcalf. If I knew children of Elijah WRIGHT and Clemency JUPIN I could show more connections to the John Medcalf who married Treacy DICKSON who I still feel belongs under John Kenelm MEDCALF. John Jupin and Eleanor____ had 4 sons & 8 daughters. John died in 1816 and left a will in Nelson Co., naming all of his 12 children. Freeborn Jupin, Mary Jupin LeMaster, Sarah Jupin Dismore, Clementine Jupin Wright, Elizabeth Jupin Medcalf, John Jupin, James Jupin, Sophia Jupin Donahew, Catherine Jupin McAdams, Kesiah Jupin Ritchie, Lewis Jupin & Eleanor Jupin. John Kenelm Medcalf was alive in 1815 Nelson Co. "Abstract of Deed Book 11, Nelson Co", NCGS, p 97: "pg 85 25 Jan 1815 Deed between Daniel Donahew & wife, Ann & John Keneten Medcalf $250.00 for 175 acres on Gilkey Run. Daniel Donahow & Ann. Knellem Medcalf on road from McAdams to Springfield. Papers from the Lawsuit Contesting John Jupin's Will Charles and Elizabeth Medcalf brought suit in the Chancery Division of Nelson Circuit Court contesting John Jupin's will. This we already knew; however, I don't think anyone has had access to the case papers before. Though partially damaged in a courthouse fire, the case papers filed with the bill are still preserved in Nelson County. These papers are stored in the metal drawers in which they appear to have been filed originally; and though their edges were severely burned during the fire, making complete quotations impossible, the greater portions survived fire. The files are evidently off-limits; but I found this out only after I had begun copying, so the attendant allowed me to finish what I could before she was scheduled to leave. There was a large number of filled out summonses on printed forms, which because time was limited and because they didn't appear to contain much meaningful information, I did not copy. I did attempt copy all of the primary documents containing facts of the case. Their content allows the following account, providing John Jupin's birth and death dates as accurately as was known at the time, giving proof that Sarah Jupin was the mother of Henry Dismore's children, and portraying the discord that arose among the heirs because of the terms of the will: The statement of Charles Medcalf and Elizabeth his wife, filed 10 February 1816, alleges that John Jupin was of unsound mind and memory at the time the will was written. An order dated 25 March (sic, February) was issued summoning the following persons to appear on the 18th day of the March Term to answer the Bill exhibited by Charles and Elizabeth Medcalf against them: Freeborn Jupin James Jupin Lewis Jupin Elijah Wright and Clemency his wife formerly Jupin Hugh Lamaster and Mary his wife formerly Jupin Alexander McAdams and Catharine his wife formerly Jupin Charles Dunnahugh and Sophia His wife formerly Jupin John Richey and Ellender his wife formerly Jupin Henry Dismore, John Dismore, Nathaniel Dismore, James Dismore, Ellender Dismore, Oily Dismore and Sarah Dismore, children of Sarah Dismore dec.d formerly Jupin and Nelly Richey, John Richey, William Richey, Lewis Richey, Cornelius Richey and Mary Richey children of Kizea Richey dec.d formerly Kizey Jupin and Elizabeth Jupin, Martha (sic, Mathew) Jupin, William Jupin, Rebecca Jupin, Elisha Jupin and John Jupin, infant children of John Jupin Sen, dec.d. I photocopied one copy of this order and what appears to be the top half of a duplicate. The first one was signed on the back by Elijah and Clemency Wright acknowledging service. The allegation of Charles and Elizabeth Medcalf was reaffirmed by the joint and separate answer filed 18 March 1816 in the name of the following children and grandchildren: James Jupin Catharine McAdams & Alexr McAdams her husband late Catharine Jupin Sophia and Charles Donohue her husband late Sophia Jupin Freeborn Jupin Eiiender & John Richey her husband late Ellender Jupin Elijah Wright and Clemency his wife late Jupin Charies Lemaster & Mary his wife late Jupin Their answer states in part: They have heard & believe that at the time of his decease John Jupin was wholly incapable of making a Last Will and Testament. They know that his mind had been in a state of disorder for some time before his decease His deranged state of mind increased with his increasing debility of body and the progress of the disease that terminated his life. They have been moreover informed and believe that at the time the alleged will should have been executed the said John Jupin was not only entirely deranged in mind and thereby entirely incapable to make his last will and testament, but on that account he was also so enfeebled by disease as to be unable to sign his name to the said alleged will or signify by utterance or intelligible sign his approbation thereof. They have reason to believe that Lewis Jupin caused the alleged will to be written as it is; and that thereby he is in fraud of his brothers and sisters. This answer was signed and sworn to on 18 March 1816 by Charles and Sophia Donohue, Alexander and Catharine McAdams, John and Eleanor Ritchie & John Ritchie. Freeborn Jupin swore to the answer on 20 March 1816, James Jupin on 25 March and Elijah Wright, Clemency Wright, Hugh Lemaster and Mary Lemaster on 1 April. On the 19th day of March 1817 James Jupin filed a release to Lewis Jupin of all claim to his father's estate. Lewis Jupin's answer, filed 17 June 1816, in addition to denying the foregoing allegations, further relates, in part: His father was born in the year 1740 and was about 75 years of age at his death. His brothers and sisters had left their father early in life. He continued to live with his father, whereas his brothers and sisters stood aloof acquiring wealth by their own labor. His father gave to each of his children as they left him or married considerable property or money by way of their portion of his estate, to what amount he could not say. His father departed this life about the 12th of January 1816 possessed of considerable estate both real and personal. He acknowledges that his father was deranged "reasonably," but it was but a temporary derangement produced by the use of spirits and wine. His father, in his last illness, anxious to display the feelings of a just father, after having previously given to the children who had left him a portion of his estate, by so disposing of his estate would in some design remunerate Lewis for the services from a boy to the age of 30 years. Upon the reverse of the affidavit of attorneys Wicliff & Hardin attesting that John Jupin was of sound mind and disposing memory at the time of the execution of his will appears the notation: "We the Jury find for the Defendant" Thus Lewis Jupin was exonerated of any fraud or wrongdoing, and John Jupin's estate was distributed according o the provisions of his will.
