Judy thank you SO much for explaining in detail the situation. I very much appreciate this help. I have friends who don't understand where the challenge is in finding dead people - after all they say they aren't going anywhere. If they only knew -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Frostfreedet@aol.com Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 9:45 PM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Court Records (MD estate records after 1774) "rubyslippers" wants to know: how does one obtain estate records after 1774? The Prerogative Court system was abolished with the beginning of the Revolutionary War. After that, wills, inventories, accounts and settlements were filed in and handled by the individual County Courts of Quarter Sessions (or of Common Pleas). In addition, Orphans Courts were established in Maryland Counties beginning in 1776. These typically handled some matters previously handled by the Church of England Vestry (such as binding out orphans) and many land partition and distribution matters. Locating these records for specific Counties can be a problem, since the MD Archives has gone around seizing various documents from most Courthouses. Many but not all Counties retained microfilms of the records, or kept originals from (varying) specific dates. The current administration of the Archives believes in hiding information on its holdings beneath layers and layers of nearly unintelligible pages, and usually the search engines will give you articles *about* documents rather than results about the actual documents (holdings and locations). So your best bet is to call the County Courthouse and speak to the County Clerk's office staff, who can tell you pretty much what is where. Some contact information can be found here for MD Counties (scroll down to the bottom and pick your County of interest), but these pages are not entirely accurate and up-to-date about specific County holdings (as distinguished from the MD Archives holdings). Just a question, How do we know that Thomas Nelson Medcalf was born ca 1790 Nelson Co.KY Do we have some records his name appears on? Also you state: > 10 Charles Medcalf ca 1810- m Frances Coomes > 19 Feb 1833 Nelson Co--have 9 children. Can I have the 9 Children and who they married, have they been located on a Census record? Also curious about this placement > 3 John Medcalf b ca 1793; m Treasy/Teresa > Dickson/Dixon 22 Aug 1814 Nelson Co--have 8 ch Do we have some proof this John Medcalf was the son of Ignatius Medcalf Sr.? I was thinking he might be son of John Kenelem MEDCALF because he has a son John K. MEDCALF, of course I have no proof as to his correct placement at this point, still working on Medcalf's. -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Gough Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 9:02 PM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com; Mike Gough Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Ignatius Medcalf (b 1750) might be Hampton??? -- Finish entering this Finish entering this mary.yoder@verizon.net wrote: > Ignatius Medcalf SR & MARY ??-- had: > 1 Ignatius JR b 1786 Ft Boonesboro; d 16 Apr 1864 > Franklin Co, KY; m1 Nelly Richie/Ritchie (d/o John & > Jemima Quick Ritchie--d bef 23 Sep 1823 Nelson Ky)- have 3 ch; m2 Agatha Catharine HUFF (Hough--d/o Aaaron & Nancy "Ann" Coomes Hough)--26 Sep 1823 Nelson Co by O'Brien (RCCP)- have 5 children.. > > 2 Joseph Medcalf SR b 1788 Nelson Co, KY; m Nancy > Ann FIGG (1793 Berkeley Co, Va, d 1861-1869 > LaRue Co) 17 Apr 1811 Nelson Co.--have 13 ch but > by Cen--14. > > 3 John Medcalf b ca 1793; m Treasy/Teresa > Dickson/Dixon 22 Aug 1814 Nelson Co--have 8 ch > > 4 Benjamin Medcalf ca 1790 Nelson Co; m Mary > Bethel (Figg, father John Figg consents)-- 1 Jun 1812 > Nelson Co. For those of you who may be interested, I have begun writing history articles for the "County Times", a relatively new newspaper in St. Mary's County. The first article appeared last Thursday and the newest one came out today. While both of these are about St. Mary's County, I will cover people and places in Charles, Calvert, and Prince George's County too. This newspaper is on line at: http://countytimes.somd.com:80/ Click on the cover and go to page 32. Any suggestions for new articles will be welcomed and appreciated. Linda Reno
It wouldn't hurt to double check, but Margaret Fresco's book, "Marriages and Deaths in St. Mary's County, Maryland 1634-1900" lists only the marriage license being issued. You may get the name of the applicant for the license or you may get more. Good luck. Since some of you are discussing Browns, I thought I would post my MD Brown brick wall. Edward Brown was born about 1741 and married Henrietta Kirby, daughter of Richard Kirby about 1770 in probably PG Co. MD. Edward Brown was listed in the 1776 PG Co. MD Census with wife and two young sons. They moved to Union Co. SC between 1780-1790. I would love to find the parents of this Edward Brown. Perhaps it was John since that is the name of his first son. Descendants of Edward BROWN 1 Edward BROWN b: Abt. 1741 in of Perhaps PG Co. MD .. +Henrietta "Hennie" KIRBY b: Abt. 1753 in PG Co. It appears that the children of "my" Nicholas Brown were Richard, ca 1730, Ignatius, ca 1733 (my 4th grgrandfather), Mary, ca 1735, Nicholas, ca 1738, Elizabeth, ca 1741, Monica, ca 1745, Peter, ca 1748, and Appalonia, ca 1752. This I am getting from the Barth book, which has fairly good sourcing. So there are two Nicholas Browns. Our common ancestry, if it is that, splits at that point, you being descended from Nicholas, Jr., and I from his brother Ignatius. Attention Sarah Cannon and Thomas Bohan I am also related to Dorothea Catherine Brown who m. Samuel Burch. I just checked my database, and I also do not know anything about Benjamin Brown, so If Thomas Bohan knows the lineage, I, too would be interested. Also I see below Samuel Burch and wife, Margaret McClain, mentioned in the estate of Benjamin Brown. I do not have them in my database, but have several Samuels, does anyone have information on them? I will share what I have in my database about them and interested in all of this family. If you find errors in my database, please correct me, as we all know how important it is to have the correct information. In addition, I am the daughter of Guy Henry Porter Sr, son of James Henry Porter and Janie Clements, and son of Guy Henry Porter I, and son of Dr. Henry B. Porter that married Mary Burch, her 2nd marriage as her first husband, Dr. Guy Elder; last of all Dr. Henry B. Porter was the son of Philip Porter and Nancy Ann Brent, whom I continue to search for Philip's Parents. So if anyone has info tucked away about the Porter Family as well, I would love to have that information too. Descendants of James M. Queen, #1H 1 [4] James M.
