    2. DNA testing (_Brownieofbowie@aol.com_ (mailto:Brownieofbowie@aol.com) Thank you Dr. Moseley. It was most informative to think of surname groups. I hadn't thought of that as a possibility. I am an alumni of Texas Wesleyan from 1958, so I'm still gaining knowledge from Ft. Worth, TX. Mr. Saunders, thank you for such an informative and easy to follow discussion. Knowing the three top testing places was very helpful, especially with the detail. Thanks to you both, Mary B Original Message 28 Jan 2009 From: Brownieofbowie@aol.com Subject: [MDSTMARY] DNA testing I know this is an old subject, but I would like to know what "you" think about the various DNA testing i.e. which is the best and what your experience has been? I think I have talked my only hope for a male cousin to have the testing done. I need to strike while he is willing. He is concerned about confidentiality and privacy. Mary B ************** 29 Jan 2009 From: "Fredric Z. Saunders" _fzsaund@ix.netcom.com_ (mailto:fzsaund@ix.netcom.com) [MDSTMARY] DNA _testing_ (mailto:testing@elasmtp-spurfowl.atl.sa.earthlink.net) Probably the three most popular are FamilyTree DNA, DNA Heritage, and Ancestry.com. You will get privacy with all of them. The first thing you should do is see if there is an existing project for the surname to be tested. FTDNA has the largest database, and will most likely have the largest number of persons tested with any surname. There are exceptions where some surnames have decided to go with one of the other two. It may be best to go which ever company has the largest project for the surname, although there are other things you will want to consider. You may also want to browse the Rootsweb archives for lists as Genealogy-DNA y-DNA-Projects and some others to see what people have said is good and what they don't like about the different companies. FTDNA has tests of 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers, plus some specific additional ones. DNA Heritage and Ancestry.com have a 43 marker test (claimed by Ancestry as 46). All the companies test for 3 additional multiple markers that most people (99+%) don't have, and will report them if found. Ancestry chooses to "advertise" those three in the amount they test, even though they know most people are only going to get a report of 43 markers. There is some overlap in the markers tested, but not fully. For a 43 marker test, only 32 are in common with the FTDNA 37 marker test. Only 34 of the 43 marker test are in common with FTDNA's 67 marker test. So, while comparing results from a person who tested with one company who tested with another is not an exact apples to apples results, it isn't a totally different apples to oranges either. If most people of the surname have tested with one company, and you go with another, then you won't have an exact comparison of results. If there are projects with two or three companies, I would also suggest "interviewing" the project administrators for each, especially if there are many things about DNA you don't feel comfortable with as in interpreting results. Besides the size of each project, how often or soon do they post new results? Do they e-mail participants when new results are in, and give an interpretation? Are they willing to answer your questions, or at least give you sources on things they can't? Or, are they an "administrator" who doesn't respond to any e-mail, and is apparently glad that people test to see if they match THEM, but if you don't, you are unimportant. Are the results of the entire project on a website (either public or private) where you can view and compare your results with others? How organized is that page? Does it look like the administrator is active and working for the ENTIRE project, or is there no website, or one that appears poorly kept? Is there a method at the website of comparing results with lineages (usually down to about 1900) or earliest ancestor, so that you can know not only who you do match, but what lineages you don't match? 3. Jerry, If you go to the Hardin County Court House records http://www.hccoky.org/search.asp and do a name search you will find wills for a John Medcalf who lists a son John K Medcalf, and a will for a John K Medcalf, either or both of them may be the John Medcalf in St Clare Catholic Cemetery in Colesburg. but more likely it is John K Medcalf, the son. I've photographed most of the tombstones in St Clare and about 20% of them are difficult or impossible to read. John Medcalf's will is dated May 8, 1849. He lists his wife "Incia Medcalf" He also lists daughter Matilda Pursell and husband, daughter Celey Thompson, son G W Medcalf and son John K Medcalf, youngest son Charles Medcalf, and appoints son Samuel Medcalf as his executor. Codicil to this will was written on Dec 14, 1854 to change disposal of assets and to deduct from his son George W Medcalf, a certain sum advanced to him in the intervening 5 years. This will was presented in the Hardin Co Courthouse in Elizabethtown on Monday, January 15, 1855, purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of John Medcalf, deceased. John K Medcalf's will is dated Oct 4, 1868 and he names his wife Mary Ann, Mother Teresa Medcalf and two sons Thomas Lee Medcalf and John Clarence Medcalf. Both sons are listed as not of legal age, This will was presented at the Hardin Co, KY Courthouse in Elizabethtown on Oct 19, 1868 purporting to be the last will and testament of John K Medcalf, deceased Bob Alvey In a message dated 01/29/09 16:00:47 Pacific Standard Time, jerry876@comcast.net writes: St Clare Cemetery Colesburg Kentucky Colesburg, KY is in Hardin County, KY So the tomstone must be that of John K. 3. 2 males under 10 in 1810 - born between 1800-1810 One of them has to be Charles Medcalf born 1810. 2 males age 10-15 in 1810- born between 1795-1800 - George Medcalf has to one of them and I think he likely was born 1795, 1- male age 16-25 in 1810 between 1785-1794-( my guess- Elisha MEDCALF born 1785 1- female age 10-15 in 1810 (I would say this is likely Eliza MEDCALF born abt 1800) Sarah born 1882 Was already married and Nancy was old enough to be away working. I think and I can't prove it but believe the Elisha Medcalf born 1785 is also a son of John Kenelem MEDCALF, now I'm not sure if he is the same one who married Catherine Parker (BODINE) but if so he fits nicely under John Kenelem Medcalf. then we would still need to find one more closer in age of Charles Medcalf. But we would have too many males in the 16-25 age bracket. Dave can you see if you can find William KING and Nancy Medcalf on the 1850 CENSUS? That might help give us her age. And I want to double check age of George MEDCALF about 1840 Census.

    3. Girls old enough to work were usually off working at someone else's home. Boys tended to be farmers so they help their father. What are the age groups for the boys? Charles Medcalf was born 1810, don't know when George MEDCALF was born, have not found him on Census. To be sure we get the correct one we need to check 1830 and 1840 Census to determine his age. Supposedly his wife Mary Abell born 1 Jan 1795 , Nelson, Kentucky which makes me believe George MEDCALF probably born between 1790-1795, We know George was alive in 1837 because he was the Executor of his fathers will which only mention George Medcalf by name as son of John Kenelem MEDCALF, all other children already provided for. Eliza Medcalf was dead prior to her fathers will of 1837. Don't know age of Nancy likely born before 1800 since she married in 1818, Eliza Medcalf likely born abt 1800-1805, because her husband was born 1800. -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of David Lee Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 10:15 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] John Kenelem MEDCALF 1810 Census Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY Head of House John K. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] John Kenelem MEDCALF
    2. Jerry L. Clark
    3. Maybe you should check before 1810 Census like 1800. There is only two John K. Medcalf's. The 2nd one wasn't born until 13 May 1827, and he left a will identifying all of his children. The only John K. MEDCALF alive before 1827 was John Kenelem MEDCALF. The John K. MEDCALF born 13 May 1827 was the son of John Medcalf and Treacy DICKSON. I suspect his father could also be a son of John Kenelem MEDCALF but I have found nothing to prove that. The Girls I found all state their father was John K. MEDCALF. And the only one who existed at time these girls married was John Kenelem MEDCALF. Many times children are off visiting relatives when census is taken. If John K. MEDCALF had 5 boys, I have only identified 2 of them. Nelson Co Ky Marriages 1801-1816, NCGR Felix Wimsatt & Sarah Medcalf Bond: 1 Jan 1805 M: 8 Jan 1805 Ignatius Medcalf signed bond Consent filed with bond: John K & Winnifred Medcalf, Parents of Sarah Ignatius & Eleanor Wimsatt, parents of Felix Married by S T Badin, marriage register Sarah Medcalf identified both her father and her mother, so no question she's a daughter. Nelson Co Ky Marriages 1817-1832, NCGR William King & Nancy Medcalf Bond: 15 Oct 1818 M: 16 Oct 1818 Philip Read signed bond William, s/o Jacob King Nancy, d/o John K Medcalf Married by Joshua Morris, minister return This one has to be his daughter also because the helps to identify her brother George Medcalf. Nelson Co Ky Marriages 1833-1848 (NCGR) George Medcalf & Mary Abell Bond: 4 May 1835 M: May 1835 William King signed bond Katherine Abell, mother of Mary, filed consent w/bond W: William King, Nancy King Married by W S Coomes, minister return Notice his sister and her husband were witnesses Nelson Co Ky Marriage, Bond & Consent, 1817-1832 Jacob Thralls & Eliza Medcalf Bond: 27 Apr 1823 John K Medcalf father of Eliza signed bond and consent in person Charles Medcalf who married Sarah Jane CARRICO, his death notice identified both his parents. So no question these are all children of John Kenelem Medcalf even if Census records don't show it. -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of David Lee Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 10:15 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] John Kenelem MEDCALF 1810 Census Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY Head of House John K. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] DNA testing
    2. Fredric Z. Saunders
    3. Probably the three most popular are FamilyTree DNA, DNA Heritage, and Ancestry.com. 3. DNA testing go to the site www.familytree.com. I had it done and you can chose who to release your information to and they keep everything confidential. Several surname groups have been set up and you can locate them on that site and if yours is there you can join your specific surname group. 3. Dear List, I realize that 99.9% of all the web sites on Rootsweb world Family Trees claim that George A. MEDCALF who married Elizabeth WINKLER and his brother John Allen MEDCALF who married Frances WINKLER are the sons of John Kenelem MEDCALF. I know Mary Yoder and Melissa Alexander Thompson have both claimed such, but they are mistaken. The truth is that all of these web sites that claim this are false. It's time we get the lineage correct. If that is how you have it in your data base please removed it. George A. MEDCALF who married Elizabeth WINKLER and his brother John Allen MEDCALF who married Frances WINKLER are both sons of a George A. MEDCALF Sr. and Nancy ? this Medcalf line comes from Pennsylvania I believe. Maybe they were at one time from Maryland. If you go to this web site: http://www.usgwarchives.org/ky/ohio/marriage.htm Scroll down until you see the 2 boxes that say Marriage Records. Go to 2nd Box that says Marriage Records 1795 thru 1950 submitted by <http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00009.html#0002227> Joe Taylor Click on Surnames Starting with M When you open this up scroll down to Medcalf You will eventually find this entry MEDCALF, ALLEN WINKLER, FANNY 9-8-1813 A/OCR 13 BENJAMIN KELLEY WILLIAM GALLOWAY Consent of ADAM WRINKLER for daughter FANNY witnessed by GEORGE WINKLER & WILLIAM GALLOWAY dated SEPTEMBER 1, 1813. Consent of GEORGE MEDCALF for son ALLEN witnessed by GEORGE WINKLER dated AUGUST 31, 1813. Now scroll down until you see this Entry MEDCALF, JOHN WINKLER, FANNY 9-18-1813 OD BENJAMIN KELLEY WILLIAM GALLOWAY What we learn from these two entries is that Allen and John MEDCALF are one and the same. The correct name is John Allen MEDCALF notice also that it says Consent of ADAM WRINKLER for daughter FANNY. This Should be Adam WINKLER father of Frances "Fanny" WINKLER Now notice: Consent of GEORGE MEDCALF for son ALLEN So If John Allen MEDCALF had a Father George MEDCALF, where on earth do we get the idea that John Allen MEDCALF was the son of John Kenelem MEDCALF? John Allen MEDCALF also had a brother named George A. MEDCALF who married Elizabeth WINKLER If John Allen MEDCALF and George A. MEDCALF Jr. were brothers then would they not both have a father George MEDCALF? So tell me why does 99.9 % of all the web sites Claim John Allen MEDCALF and George A. MEDCALF Jr. were sons of John Kenelem MEDCALF? I'm baffled, how about you. Doesn't make much since. What usually happens on Rootsweb Family World Trees is one person makes the mistake and all others copy. And that is exactly why I look at these trees but try to validate their claims. In this case they all have it wrong. "History of Spencer Co." states George Jr. b. Penn., Elizabeth b. N.C.- 9/12/1847 - Edward Medcalf app'td admin of estate of George Medcalf.
