According to Multimap, a village called "Mitford" is about a mile west of the larger town of Morpeth, and both of them are about 10 miles due north of Newcastle upon Tyne. The Bulmers married Fenwicks, the Fenwicks married Pyes, but I found no marriages between the previous clans and the Lomax and Bonner clans, though many of those names were christened at the various churches in Newcastle upon Tyne. Preface 47; MEDICAL. The Provincial Court proceedings contain fewer items of medical interest than do the county court records, but some references are worth mentioning. John Morecroft, the leading member of the Maryland bar at this period was a physician as well as a lawyer. We find him practicing medicine in Virginia in 1664 before coming to Maryland (p. 26). In what seems to have been a splte suit and one which he lost, Morecroft, after losing an earlier suit for defamation against his former indentured servant, William Champ, who had called his late master a "Cheating old Knave", sued Champ for an accounting at the October, 1666, court. In this latter suit Champ declared that he had been "imployed [by Morecroft] in the Art & mystery of Physick, as his servant by Indenture". Champ, who died in the latter part of the year 1668, was then referred to as a "phytitian" of St Mary's County (pp. 119, 120, 122, 126, 130). [NJL note: this next sentence is in error. He didn't marry her, just made her his executor.] He had probably incurred the enmity of Morecroft by marrying Fortune, the widow of Bulmar Mitford, who had been a patient of Morecroft. Fortune, however, promptly consoled herself by marrying a very short time after Champ's death, a third husband Marmaduke Semmes (p. 358). Volume 57, Provincial Court Proceedings, 1668. 3. Jackie, ] Thanks for the reply. Harry W. Newman also gives the same statement in his book "MD Semmes and Kindred Families", p 2. Not sure this is enough proof for joining "Flagons and Takners" thus my query for help. Again Newman (p 1 ) gives " By July 7, 1669, however he was courting Madam Fortuna Mitford, the widow of Bulmer Mitford who had emigrated to Mdabout 1664 and who died within the next few years..." So Mitford was the name of her lst husband. As to Watson I also have read that this could be the maiden name but have never seen any proof to support such. 1. [MDSTMARY] James Howard DNA-b. MD died 1802 Washington, KY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GayleLonderee Surnames: Howard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.stmarys/4404/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for DNA participants from St. Mary's with surname Howard. I have one match already in Kentucky. We would like proof of parentage of James Howard, John Baptist Howard, William Howard, et al. who came to Nelson/Washington counties in 1780s. Our haplogroup is E1b1b (it used to be called E3b). This haplogroup is further divided into about 18 subgroups; ours is ultimately of Balkan origin. The haplogroup is only 2 to 3% of the English population.Surprisingly, studies have traced its early origins. In early history this group was known as Thracians. They fought with Troy against the Greeks. They fought as "peltasts" (warriors who fought with 2 javelins & slings)with Alexander the Great against Darius and the Persians. When the area (now roughly equivalent to Kosovo)was conquered by the Romans it was called Moesia Superior. The Romans formed military units from the area, and sent some to Britain. Rome continued sending troups from 120 AD to about 400 AD. Most of these soldiers stayed in Britain, and intermarried with the local population. Rome withdrew from Britain, and a few hundred years later the Anglo-Saxons invaded. They tried to kill or remove the male population living in England at the time. Our haplogroup, E1b1b, is not found at all in Ireland, Scotland, or the center of England. It comes from either an area that stretches from Caernarvon, Wales to Chester to York, or in East Anglia (Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex). This information didn't come with our Ancestry DNA test, or their website. I found it searching around, wondering why almost everyone on the Howard DNA site was R1b. There are Howards from York, VA who are E1b1b, but their markers are different, so we're not related. An excellent study about this haplogroup in England was written by Stephen C. Bird, that can be found at the address below. http://www.jogg.info/32/bird.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I know innkeeper bonds were required but not really aggressively ennforced. Those selling ale w/out had hefty fines. I've seen some from wash, nelson and marion co. Ky courthouses 1780-1850. Don't know if st. mary's co. has them or not, but I would guess so. The bonds I've seen give name, year, location of inn and tax stamps when paid. -----Original Message----- From: Mary Ann Shoemaker <maryshoe@cox.net> Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 1:45 PM To: St Mary's co. web site <MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [MDSTMARY] Question? 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Maps for [MDCHARLE] Sam Berry and info on Judge Thomas Baker Berry and other
    2. Hello everyone: I am enjoying this discussion very much. Thank you for sharing this with us. If you would like to take a look at the locations of some of the properties discussed below, go to the Library of Congress website, MSA SC 1213-1-118 Martenets Atlas of Maryland 1861. Sorry, I didn't keep the exact website address. I have saved one on my files for PGCO Dist 5 which is Piscataway and all of the land owners are listed on the approximate location of their property for that time. If I remember correctly, you can find other areas in other counties, but the only one I have now is PG Co. Many of the families and names in documents mentioned below are found on these maps. What is great about the maps is that you can hit on the magnifying icon and it blows up the picture to make the reading of the names very easy. It will keep enlarging them till you read only one name if you want. Pretty neat. Thanks again Chuck Harris In a message dated 2/26/2009 5:53:09 P.M. Central Standard Time, k98@elmore.rr.com writes: Hello Shirley and all, Good to hear from you and thanks for the info about that landsale. In my youth, when visiting Maryland and my grandmother and her sisters, they used to talk of the old days, who we were related to, what land our families used to own, etc.. I vaguely remember hearing the name Smallwood and Smallwood plains. But Oh how I wish I had've listened more and asked more questions. They are all dead now and along with them all their vast family knowledge and history. As I have said before, at the time of her deat in 1994-5my grandmother owned around 93 acres of land she always said was called Friendship and had been in her Berry family for ages. But I have also heard it was originally Edelen land. I grew up in Alabama and know no other relatives other than my 1st cousins and a couple of 2nd cousins on my Berry side. But the ones who knew anything, my Grandmother Eloise Gilmore Berry (rs. David Middeleton Edelen), and my Great-Aunts Marguarite Berry Tubman, Azine Berry Carroll, and Jean Berry Lyons, are all passed away now. Unfortunately I am unsure about anyone past my great great grandfather Thomas Baker Berry. I have heard various scenarious from various people, and a lot of people here and there have graciously sent me info, but nothing concrete in tying into Great Great Grandpapa Berry. But once someone sent me some info on a Berry who came to Charles County back in the old days from Virginia whose wife's maiden name was Baker. I have since lost that info and wish I still had it because one time my grandmother said we were not kin to the other Berrys in Charles County, or at least not closely. I have probably sent this before, but below is an excerpt from my Berry file which is all I have on Judge Berry. I hope it is of some interest to some. I also wonder where the other descendents of his and his children are these days. Besides actual info you will see my own notes for the benifit of my family members" ------------------------------------------------------------------ I. JUDGE THOMAS BAKER BERRY, Born Abt. 1806--Died sometime between 1880 and 1887, closer to 1887 due to the fact that he was on the 1880 census, being 74 years old, and then he was listed on a list of dead to be removed from voters list in 1887 newspaper: see below. The following was found under "The National Intelligencer", 1800-1850, under the National Genealogical Society web site www.ngsgenealogy.org : BERRY, Thomas B. and Jane L. LANCASTER, daughter of Washington F. Lancaster, all of Charles Co., Md., were married Feb 17 by the Rev. Mr. Neale. (Feb. 24, 1835 - date published) -M- 2/17/1835 by Rev. Neale JANE MARSHALL LANCASTOR, Born Abt. 1817--D. (?). NOTE: Jane was the daughter of Mr. Washington F. and Sarah (Marshall) Lancaster. According to my grandmother, Eloise Gilmore (Berry) Edelen, Jane's mother, Sarah Marshall, was of the Marshall family of "Marshall Hall" fame of Charles County, Md.. Judge Thomas Baker Berry, besides being a Tobacco Farmer and a member of the "Landed Gentry" of Charles Co., Md., was also in the legal field and eventually a Judge working out of Port Tobacco much of the time. According to various family members, including the granddaughters of Judge Berry, he owned thousands of acres of land in Charles County, Md., and hundreds of slaves. That might be an exaggeration, but then he might have had holdings all over Charles and Pr. Georges Counties, Md.. According to the 1860 census records he owned 25 slaves. Also, according to his granddaughter, my grandmother, he did not believe in abusing slaves and treated them as family. Also, he was known for th! e fact that he did not believe in separating slave families. If he bought or sold one, it was with the stipulation that the slave's immediate family went with him/her, and not to be separated later either. POSSIBLE SERVICE IN THE WAR FOR SOUTHERN INDEPENDENCE: There was a Corporal Thomas B. Berry who fought in the War for Southern Independence in Co. "F", Gray's Virginia Cavalry. If it was our Thom. B. Berry then it was probably Judge Berry's son Thomas Baker Berry, Jr., who would have been about 20 yrs old in 1860, being born in 1841. Judge Berry would have been 55 in 1860 and probably too old to go off campaigning and fighting. But who knows?!? A lot of older men fought. Perhaps the National Archives can shed light on this. My boyfriend and I were browsing genealogy sites when I came across the Thomas Store reference. We didn't know where it was either. We asked his family and they told us it was on St. Georges Island. Just thought I'd pass on the info. Hope it helps. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have, what I feel, as an entire family tree. Locations is the agenda for me at present. I did have some Purcells on St. George's Island and visited there when I was a young boy. I am 65 now.
