I think that Oliver Burch's wife's name was Ann Nevitt not Mary or Mary Ann. Below is taken from her mother, Mary ? Nevitt McAtee's will where her name was listed as Ann Burch. > Mary Nevitt Macatee's will, dated Nov. 8 1774, was probated Dec. 21 > of that same year. her will indicates that her first husband, > Richard, had two sons, John and Richard Nevitt, who would have been > minors at the time of their father's death, and that Mary, married a > second time had other children. She left the following to her family: > > " To grandchildren: Children of my son John Nevitt, One negro > man John Cooke, beds, pots, blankets, and stock to be in the > possession of my son John Nevitt, during his life and then given to > his children. > To grandson William Miles Nevitt, son of Richard Nevitt, furniture > and stock. > To daughter Rosamond Macatee, stock and personality. > To grandson John Tennison, son of my daughter Elizabeth Tennison, > stock and 400 lbs of tobacco. > To grandson John Nevitt, Jr. one negro man Ben, stock and wearing > apparel, > To daughter ANN BURCH, one negress Lucy, 1000lbs of tobacco and book. > To grandson Charles Nevitt, stock and iron pot. > To daughters ANN BURCH and Rosamond Macatee, wearing apparel. > To grandsons John Nevitt and William Miles Nevitt, the residue. > > Barbara, Catherine, and Thomas Mccpherson were witnesses to this > will. Mary's son John Nevitt was made executor of the estate, with > grandson William Miles Nevitt to be executor if John were deceased. Ann Burch's nephew, William Miles Nevitt, listed in his grandmother's will is my gggg-grandfather. Thank goodness his grandmother wrote a will because if not for it, I would not know where WM Nevitt belonged in the Nevitt family tree. Susan Johanson > > > -- --- Susan C. He was granted 750 acres of land in St. Mary's County, was a Burgess in 1649, and gave land to a church on St. Clement's Bay in 1661. Britton (found on a 1692 map) on Breton's Bay marks the locality of his estate.", as shown in the excerpts from the Maryland Archives. I think they are one and the same, don't you? We know quite a bit about him in America. If he were a William Brereton of the English Cheshire family it would be quite a find for me, since the Bretton family in England and I has been trying for years with no success to connect William Bretton of Maryland to his English forbears. He was a staunch Catholic and not to be confused with the staunch Puritan, Sir William Brereton, who emigrated to New England. The latter is definitely of the Cheshire Brereton family. See for example, http://www.british-civil-wars.co.uk/biog/brereton.htm I was not aware that surname Brereton and Bretton (Britton) are the same. I don't know if it means anything or not, but the Baylor Burch and wife Lucy Crisp in NC spposeedly (according to online interenet info.) had a son named "Dyer Burch" who was born between 1790 and 1814 in Caswell Co NC. I don't think it was a coincidence that Henry Burch was at the same estate sale as Benjamin Suit in Caswell in 1803 for a man named Thomas Langley. I am very interested in anyting I can find about Benjamin Suit. -------------------------- RE: Augustine Burch was born 1778 in Charles County, MD, and died 06 Aug 1834 in Bryantown, Charles Co., Maryland. I descend from Lydia Wethington who married Charles C. Shanks. I have that Charles is the son of Thomas Wethington and Mary Ann Tippett. I have more on this line. I do not have that Lydia married a John Shanks, son of Thomas. Happy to share what I have. Hope we can just get to the truth. Attention B. K. Marshall Walter "Watty" Burch was my 3rd great grandfather who m. Teresa Hagan and this is what I have for their children, and you will see that they did have Mary Burch b. 1794 who m. 1st Dr. Guy Elder and he died, and she married my 2nd great grandfather, Dr. Henry B Porter FYI, Stanislaus was not b. 1817 but married 1817 to Christina Hagan. For anyone that does not have it, I can send you a picture of Walter and Teresas home in New Haven, KY (just email me at djhimes@bellsouth.net) . We were there just last summer, and it is slowly deteriorating, the walls are being propped up but it sure was a nice home when it was built. It was the home where the visiting Priest said masses on Sunday, for a long time. I am not familiar with any Burches that went to SC but it could be true. In my database, shown below, it looks like Walter and Teresas children are all buried in KY. Anyone working on these Burch families, I would also be grateful if anyone has pictures of the older Burch Families that they could scan and share. Thanks in advance. In your research of the Burch family have you come across any that ended up in Kentucky? To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009, 9:04 AM Thanks Mike. There were no other Burch people in the will, but at his estate sale, I see a George Burch, Mary Burch, Bay Lor Burch (Baylor), and Richard Burch so they may be relatives and related, but not sure. None are mentioned in his will. Only his siister's children and he names his sister as Susannah JONES plus the man named James JONES witnessed it. I was wondering if Richard Burch was perhaps the same person as Richard Nevitt Burch. Do you know what happened to him? Thanks Mike. I am interested in Walter "Watty" BURCH who married Teresa HAGAN, a distant cousin of my Kentucky great grandfather George NEWMAN. I have them with two children , Mary b.1794 married Dr.Guy ELDER in 1814, and Stanislaus b.1817 married Christina HAGAN (a 2nd cousin). Do you have anything more on Walter and Teresa? Bonnie, don't know if this will help but this is what I have for the family of Henry Burch's parent, Oliver and Mary Nevitt Burch. Oliver Burch was Episcopal and Mary Nevitt was Catholic. They were both true to their traditions and attended churches in the "same neighborhood." Their children split between the traditions. I was told once that the Catholic Burches predominantly went to Kentucky and the Protestant Burches went south but I am not sure who was who. Forest: You need to get a copy of "Notes on Genealogy: The Family of Stephen Jones and Related Families" by George A. Norris, if you don't already have a copy. I have the 2006 edition, but from what George tells me, he's working on an up-date. Stephen married Lydia Wood per this book. After Stephen died, she married Gerard Bennett {1815}. Lydia has a stone at Mt. Zion, Laurel Grove - now United Methodist; formerly Methodist Episcopal. See what's posted to www.findagrave.com at Mt. Zion & Joy Chapel on this Jones line. An article "The Brown Family" in the Antietam Ancestors, dated Nov. 1992, written by Andree W. Wilson-Taylor, reads: " Anthony Browne, son of John and Mary, like his father, passed all his days in Brittain's Bay. He wed a daughter of William L. Langham and had children: 1. Anthony remained in St. Mary's County 2. William, of whom Presently 3. John remained in St. Mary'y County 4. Ignatius remained in St. Mary's County." How does the Anthony Brown who married a Langham of this article relate to the Anthony Brown of the present discussion? Nancy -----Original Message----- From: Jerry L.
