Linda Reno, I hope were in agreement now. I have Placed Thomas Clarke Jr. son of Thomas Clarke and Grace GREENWELL as the one who married Susanna HORNE, I have Susanna HORNE as daughter of John HORNE and Mary ? I have Susanna HORNE's Brother as the John HORNE Jr. who married Ann HENDLEY Children of JOHN HORNE and MARY ______ 13)JOHN HORNE married Ann HENDLEY 14)SUSANNAH HORNE b 1718 married Thomas Clarke Jr. 15)PRISCILLA HORNE single in 1750 I then have one of John John HORNE Jr.'s daughters as having married Charles JARBOE- Who does this Charles Jarboe belong to? Hi Jerry, Thomas and Cuthbert Clarke were paid by the estate--they weren't sureties. I agree that these two were brothers and sons of Thomas Clarke and Grace Greenwell. Agree that Cuthbert m. Mary Ann Brown. Don't know who Thomas married but he left two children. I think he married Susanna HORNE Will of Thomas Clarke, Sr., SMC, 1/20/1777-2/15/1777. Daughter: Priscilla Clarke, a negro wench named Hannah and an equal part of the rest of my estate. Exec.: Son, Ignatius Clarke. Wit: John Horn Abell, John Dunbar. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). I do have Susanna Horn m. to a Thomas Clarke and it would seem to make sense that it was Thomas, brother of Cuthbert. Same area, same cast of characters, same time. So are we in agreement? I have Thomas CLARKE son of Robert Clarke Jr. and Mary ? married to Joanna ? and 2nd to Susanna ? Do we agree?
Hi Jerry, Thomas and Cuthbert Clarke were paid by the estate--they weren't sureties. I agree that these two were brothers and sons of Thomas Clarke and Grace Greenwell. Agree that Cuthbert m. Mary Ann Brown. Don't know who Thomas married but he left two children. Will of Thomas Clarke, Sr., SMC, 1/20/1777-2/15/1777. We're disagreeing on who was who though. You say that Thomas Clarke later married Susanna Horn. I'm saying he was married to her by 1748. The Thomas Clarke who died in 1783 had a wife named Susanna, but she wasn't Susanna Horn. Besides, you said that this Thomas Clarke was also married to Joanna, widow of John Worthington (I carry the surname Witherington). If so, Susanna Horn was dead prior to 1760. Your belief is that the Thomas Clarke who died in 1783 was the one who m. Susanna Horn and I don't think so. I'm sure you base this on him having a brother named Robert. While Thomas Clarke, Jr. did have a brother named Robert, it's not the same guy. I believe that one (d. 1783) was the son of Robert Clarke and wife, Mary. He also had a brother named Robert who he named in his will as executor. Robert died before the estate was settled and he was replaced by his nephew, Matthias Clarke--the son of his brother, Robert. Will of Thomas Clarke, SMC, 6/5/1783-8/5/1783. Son: George Clarke, a negro named Lewis; one young horse; and a saddle and bridle. Daughter: Nancy Clarke, a negro named Jesse. Daughter: Anna Clarke, a negro named Nace. Son: Thomas Clarke, a negro named Dick. Exec: Brother, Robert Clarke. Wit: Moses Davis, William Loker. Good morning, I'm not sure who this John Walker was. Donnelly said he was the son of William Walker who died in 1736. I think he was a brother, not a son. John Walker was married twice. By the first wife he had Margaret and Richard. The rest of his children were by Jane, whom he married between 1740-1744 as Richard was b. 1740. The last three children, John, Jr., b. 1744; James, b. 1745; and Roger, b. 1749. Will of John Walker, no county named, 12/6/1757-2/6/1758. Joseph Walker, son of Thomas Walker and (maybe Jane Hendley) was b. July 16, 1742. If his mother was Jane Hendley, she wasn't the same Jane who married John Walker. Linda Reno, I have several questions related to the Robert Hendley FAMILY 1. you below list his Daughter Ann HENDLEY as having married JOHN HORN JR. and James DAFFIN. Do we know parents of JOHN HORN JR. and James DAFFIN? 2. he mentions daughter Mary as having married a ? COMBS do we know yet which COMBS she married? 3. he mentions his daughter as Elizabeth GARBER although you state his daughter Elizabeth married Henry JARBOE. So was GARBER just an error in transcription? 4. Roger HENDLEY married Joanna Waughop- Do we know her parents? 5. I also have a Joanna Waughop (daughter of Thomas Waughop and Mary Watts) that married a Robert GRAVES, Robert Gravesis a witnesses on will of Robert HENDLEY. So what is the connection? 6. Hello there, Thank you for sharing this interesting will of Jon [John?] WALKER who died between 6 Dec 1757 and 6 Feb 1758. This will states that Jon WALKER also had a wife named Jane, who was alive at this time . Are you suggesting this to be Jane HENDLEY? The will of Jane's father, Robert HENDLEY, does not mention Jane, indicating that she had most likely passed on at the time it was written on 9 June1753. Will of Robert HENDLY, St Mary's County, Maryland, 9 June 1753 - 23 July 1753. Robert, Hendley 28.518 W SM June 9 1753 July 23 1753 To wife, use of my dwelling plantation. To son John Hendly, plantation that he now liveth on with the third part of all my land that is on the bay side. To son Jeremiah Hendly, dwelling plantation after the death of his mother with a third of my land on bay side. If Jeremiah Hendly dies without heir then to John Hendly and James Hendly. Elizabeth, you stated, Jane HENDELY, daughter of Robert and sister of John HENDLEY, is the wife of Thomas and mother of Joseph WALKER. Although no record of a wedding has been found to date and EEM Note: The Inventory for the Estate of Thomas WALKER states that his next of kin are Robert & John HENDLEY, indicating that he probably married a close female relative of theirs, i.e. daughter, sister or mother. . The marriage was just an idea on your part, so in running thru the wills, I just thought it was interesting to see there is a JANE married to JON. WALKER. She survives him. Maybe this Jon Walker is related to Thomas Walker. Just because a dau or son is not mentioned in a will of a parent doesn't necessarily mean they are dead. There are many reasons for not mentioning all the children in their wills. If they were given a tract or inheritance when they married they usually weren't mentioned in the wills of the parents. Sometimes one parent doesn't mention the children, and the other parent will... Just wanted to pass this finding along, to give you more to consider... I'm thrilled to have received so many responses to my questions. Amazing detective work! I'm really grateful for the information on Porto Bello. I had previously tried so many different spellings and could not find any information. I'm glad to know that such a place actually exists and that I can probably assume that it is the place my great grandmother said she was born. I'm not sure I understand the idea of a manor. Did more than one family live there? I think Catherine/Kate Goddard is a possibility. Her age and the fact that her father's name is Benjamin Goddard would make it seem very likely. The only thing that bothers me with the Benjamin Goddard connection is that my mom says Alice Goddard (her grandmother) had a step-father. I'm thinking that if Benjamin Goddard was still alive, but Mary E. Stone had died then there is no possibility of there being a step-father. I wonder if my mom is confused and ! it was actually a step-mother. Does anyone know if birth records are available for St. Mary's county in 1860? I'm thinking there were probably very few baby girls born in December 1860 at Porto Bello and I should be able to verify my great-grandmother's name and parents. Again, thank you all for the incredible amount of information you've given me. Maureen Smith-Garden City, Michigan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Unfortunately she was born in December 1860 after the census had been done and by 1870 I can no longer find Benedict Goddard. I just wanted to make sure I was looking in the right area of Maryland. Thanks to you, I would believe then that she was born in St. Mary's county and I'll continue my searches in that area. Could Porto Bello have been the area surrounding the home as well as the home itself? Thank you for the help you provided so far. My Great-grandmother's death certificate has her birthplace listed as Port Abela, Maryland. She was born in 1860. I thought at one point in time I had found a similar named town in St. Mary's county listed under now defunct towns, but I can't seem to find that information again. Any help that could be offered would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
