Right place, right time, right affiliations, e.g., John Horn Abell and John Horn Clarke. Will of Thomas Griffin, SMC, 6/20/1792-12/4/1792. Daughter: Elizabeth Griffin, the lower part of my plantation called "Pt. of Griffin's Choice" (to the head of St. Jerome's Creek and which is the dividing point between my land and the land of John Horn Abell, thence to St. Jerome's Road which is the dividing point between my land and the land of Abram Griffin's heirs and the land of Philip Griffin's heirs); five negroes named Elexis, Jess, Sarah, Ann, Joseph (son of Sarah); and one feather bed and furniture. Daughter: Priscilla Herbert, wife of William Herbert, the land I hold in the deed from William Guyther to Cecil Butler called "St. Helen's"; the land belonging to me contained in the patent of "Dant and Griffin's Resurvey"; the land I bought from James Dant; the land agreeable to the lines settled between Henry Jarboe and me adjoining the aforesaid land; all I have agreed for with Reuben Twiman (of Woodford Co., KY) which land I have in my possession but not yet conveyed. If it is not conveyed during my life, I give her 105 lbs. to be applied toward the purchase of the sd. land; 60 lbs. to purchase a negro man; four negroes named Kate, Nell, Michael, and James which she now has in her possession; and one bed and furniture. Daughter: Anna Milburn, wife of Edward Milburn, "Pt. of Griffin's Choice" between me and John Horn Abell (to the line of "Hawley's Manor", to the Bay to include the land and marsh purchased of Philip Griffin thence to the dividing line between me and John Horn Clarke (heirs of Philip Griffin) and the land of Abram Griffin's heirs to St. Jerome's Road and to the land I have bequeathed to my daughter, Elizabeth Griffin. She is to also have five negroes named Jacob, Nan, Andrew, Maryann, and Jane. Granddaughters: Priscilla Loker and Frances Loker, my plantation lying on St. Jerome's Creek which I bought from Anthony Underwood called "Elmore" equally divided between them. If either of them die before the age of 21 or without heirs, the other is to inherit the land above and the personal estate hereafter bequeathed. Granddaughter: Priscilla Loker, four negroes named Sue, Agnes, Mary, and Venus; one cow and calf. Granddaughter: Frances Loker, four negroes named George (now in the possession of her father, Thomas Loker), Henny, Hugh, and Hannah; one cow and calf. My old negro woman is to choose which of my three children she will belong to. The balance of my estate is to be equally divided between my daughters Elizabeth Griffin, Priscilla Herbert, and Anna Milburn. Execs: None specified. Witnesses: Bennet Tarlton, John Dunbar, John Horn Clarke, and Matthias Clarke. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills 1791-1802 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). Edward Abell, son of John Abell and ____Fisher m. ____Horn, dau. of John Horn. Children: John Horn Abell and Frances Abell who m. John Dunbar. No more marriages or children for this Edward Abell. His brother, Samuel Abell is said to have married a Susanna Spalding, but there's no proof and I don't believe it. >From my notes: My note to the SMC Discussion List, 3/2/2005: Judith and List, Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had another apparently incomplete version of this will and this has helped tremendously. Aside from finding the maiden name of Timothy Bowes' wife, I now show Susanna Abell married William Heard, brother of Elizabeth Heard who married Susanna's brother, John Barton Abell. William and Elizabeth Heard were the children of Mark Heard and Susanna Shercliffe. One other question remains. Who was the wife of Samuel Abell? I know that Ms. Donnelly says that she was Susanna Spalding, but I find no proof. The Susanna Spalding being claimed was the daughter of Thomas Spalding and Catherine Cooper. I believe that she married Edward Abell, not Samuel Abell. Whoever she married, she was deceased by the time of her mother's will in 1775 who devised "to the several children of my daughter, Susanna Abell, 1 shilling." Edward Abell then married Anastasia Taylor, November 07, 1778. Thomas Spalding and Catherine Cooper's children were born in the late 1720's through possibly the 1740's, too late for a daughter to have married Samuel Abell as he and his wife were having children themselves in the 1740's. Neither Thomas Spalding nor Catherine (Cooper) Spalding named their son-in-law or Abell grandchildren. Maddening. Linda Reno -- Will of John Horn Abell, SMC, 4/16/1799-3/3/1801. To: William Bennett and his heirs, the ground the wind mill stands on and half of the mill being his right since he helps keep up the gates and paths for their use. He has the right of the land as long as the mill is kept in repair and no longer. To: My sister's child, Winifred Dunbar, a negro man named Adam. If she dies without heirs, to her younger sister. To: My sister's son, John Abell Dunbar, the balance of my estate both real and personal. If he dies without heirs, the home plantation and the land I bought from William Richardson is devised to his brother, Edward Dunbar, and the land I bought from Robert Ford and Sim Stiles is devised to William Dunbar. Exec.: John Abell Dunbar. Wit.: Joseph Sanner, Sr., Henry Taylor, William Hammett. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1791-1802 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). Then we have Edward Abell. Tom says he believes this Edward Abell to be the son of Edward Abell and ____Horn. At this point I'm not sure who he belongs to, but I am still holding on to him being the one who married Susanna Spalding. We know he had a wife named Susanna who was the mother of his children baptized at St. Andrew's from 1760 forward. There was a daughter born between 1755-1760 named Susanna Abell who married Alexander Bean. Then we have both Thomas (1768) and Catherine Spalding (1775) naming their daughter Susanna Abell in their wills. Susanna appears to have been deceased before her mother as Catherine devises to Susanna's children but doesn't name them. We do have a glitch as there was a daughter named Barbara Abell, b. 1777. Now, was this a baptismal date or a birth date? If a birth date, that means Susanna was still living. The second wife of this Edward was Anastasia Taylor and Tom and I agree on this. There was also an Edward Abell who m. Elizabeth and had a daughter named Janet baptized at St. Andrew's May 4, 1783. This may or may not be the same Edward, but I am assuming for right now that it is. Report follows. Please note that Barbara Abell m. Henry Augustine Spalding. As we know, there were lots of cousins marrying during those days. If I'm correct and Susanna Spalding was the mother of Barbara, then Barbara married her first cousin as Susanna Spalding was the aunt of Henry Augustine Spalding. She was also the aunt of Zachariah Spalding who m. Eleanor Abell. Linda Reno Descendants of Edward Abell Generation No. 1 1. Jerry - I have Samuel Abell (b. 1710 - d. 1795) also married to a Susanna Spalding - but I carry him as the son of John Abell m. to FNU Fisher. From CD Early KY Settlers Washington Co., Will Book A Abell, Samuel. Feb 1, 1795. June Court 1795. Sons; Edmund, Barton, Peter, Ignatius. Daugs: Elizabeth Fenwick, Henrietta Thompson(Thomas), Susanna, Mary Ann. Grandsons: John Thomas, Bennett Thomas(Thompson), Joseph Abell, Jousha Abell. Ex: Joshua Abell (son). Wit: Benid Spalding, Robert Abell. I believe John's wife was the daughter of Edward Fisher although she was unnamed in his will. Others I note call her an Usher. Either way I show this Susannah as the daughter of Thomas Spalding and Catherine Cooper. Something is amiss since I believe Edward Abell died in 1809. Jackie Jerry L. Thomas SPALDING who married Catherine COOPER does not tell who his daughter Susanna Spalding married only that she married an ABELL. Well I think Linda Reno needs to step in and tell us what's correct. I have Edward Abell's Brother Samuel ABELL also married to a Susanna SPALDING with no parents attatched. I may have some errors. I have not researched Abell Family. Some of my data is old, and some copied from Mary Donnelley before I realized she had to many errors, but I still have some of that data in my data base. It needs to be corrected. >From CD Early KY Settlers Washington Co., Will Book A Abell, Samuel. Feb 1, 1795. June Court 1795. Sons; Edmund, Barton, Peter, Ignatius.
