    3. Bonnie, Does he have any documentation to back up these claims? **EMAIL from 2008 email to Bonnie from Vann: "Bonnie.... John LOCKE and his wife, Sarah were the first to move to Halifax County. Pension requests showed that they were in Halifax by Feb 3, 1767, when they purchased land. There were no census records back that far. The other Lockes followed shortly afterward, including John's parents, James Hulse and Susannah GREEN, and his brother James, with his wife, Susanna HALL, and their entire family. The only member of the James HULSE LOCKE family that stayed behind in SMC was son William. James Lock lived on land that was originally purchased by Henry GREEN, who was most likely Susannah's father, who had preceeded them to Halifax County. John LOCK died in Halifax in May, 1789" Now I love pork, but I'm not buying any pig in a poke. Linda Reno -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 12:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MDSTMARY] Locke family from SMC to Halifax NC in 1760's Thanks Linda. I did have that. I found another email that says his wife was Susannah Green. I had the other information I think from one of the newsletters?? Vann did send me an email in 2008 and for some reason I never corrected it in my FTM. Thank you so much for correcting the information so I can fix it. I truly appreciate your help. ---- **EMAIL from 2008 email to Bonnie from Vann: "Bonnie.... John LOCKE and his wife, Sarah were the first to move to Halifax County. Unfortunately--I am now confused more than ever because this email from Vann says that James Hulse Locke's son, William Locke, stayed in Maryland, but the other information I was given says that the children of William Locke and Eleanor are those who married in Granville. So now I am REALLY confused!! If William Locke, s/o James Hulse Locke, Sr., stayed in MD, then which WILLIAM LOCKE is father of those children? Perhaps he came later to NC? http://www.heirsandroots.com/MyFamilies/Lock.htm is the site with the will of William Locke of Granville Co. NC. Maybe he s/o of James Locke, Jr. who also had a son named William?? He was b.abt 1765. But again, the information is conflicting. I had that this William moved with his brother Josias to Chester SC. Meverell, I had a son named William Locke, b.aft. .1745 that I have no information on. I have Meverell, I's wife as possibly Elisabeth Edwards. Some of the Edwards family did go to Halifax Co. with the Lockes. Now, I wish I knew which Wm. Locke this was!!! I also found this other information about the family online: Hal 1209=15-162 John Lock planter of Hal to Peter Daniel carpenter same 4 May 1784, £12, 4a jng Lock, Drake's old line. wit Hardy Wheeless, James Baker, Sion Daniel. recd May 1784. http://home.comcast.net/~p.a.miller/genealogy/docs/danieledgehalifnashwilson /index.htm Hal 1212=15-166 Peter (x) Daniel carpenter of Hal to John Lock planter same 4 May 1784, £12, 4a jng Drake's old line, sd Lock's old line. wit Hardy Wheeless, Sion Daniel, James Baker. recd May 1784. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] William LOCK/LOCKE & Eleanor.
    2. Linda, I think you are absolutely right, it had to be William who was s/o William Locke, Sr. & Susannah Stephens who married Eleanor. He is the only early William Locke I don't have information on. It makes sense. I also don't have anything on his brother Philip. Was there also a brother named Meverell? Do you have information on them. You are definitely right about which William. 1. [MDSTMARY] Locke family from SMC to Halifax NC in 1760's
    2. Thanks Linda. John LOCK died in Halifax in May, 1789" --------------------- Sorry. I am glad I re-found the email! I also found this other information about the family online: Hal 1209=15-162 John Lock planter of Hal to Peter Daniel carpenter same 4 May 1784, £12, 4a jng Lock, Drake's old line. wit Hardy Wheeless, James Baker, Sion Daniel. recd May 1784. http://home.comcast.net/~p.a.miller/genealogy/docs/danieledgehalifnashwilson/index.htm Hal 1212=15-166 Peter (x) Daniel carpenter of Hal to John Lock planter same 4 May 1784, £12, 4a jng Drake's old line, sd Lock's old line. wit Hardy Wheeless, Sion Daniel, James Baker. recd May 1784. 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] William LOCK/LOCKE & Eleanor.
    2. Linda Reno
    3. Bonnie, I have no marriage for James Hulse Locke and no record of him after his father's will. If he moved to NC, it must have been very early. It was William Locke, son of Philip Locke and Mary Hulse, who married Susanna Stephens, daughter of Benjamin and Letitia "Lettice." William Locke is named as one of the NOK of Benjamin Stephens and was a surety on the estate. Will of Benjamin Stevens, SMC, 1/2/1732-33; 5/28/1733. Children: Benjamin Stevens, Susanna Locke, Elizabeth Stevens, and Ann Blacksham, personalty. Son: Daniel, 1/2 of dwelling plantation; if he dies without issue to son, Joseph; if Joseph dies without heirs, to son, Benjamin and if he dies without heirs to daughters. Son: Joseph, other 1/2 of plantation. No land to be sold except to each other. Exec: Wife, Lettice, Wit: James Wood, Isaac Shemwell, William Shemwell. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). 6/12/1733-8/8/1733: Admin. accts. of Benjamin Stevens, SMC. Appraisers: James Wood and Isaac Shemwell. Creditors: Joseph Edwards, Luke Barber. NOK: Benjamin Stephens and William Locke. Exec., Lettice Stephens (Skinner). 8/24/1734: Admin. accts. of Benjamin Stevens, SMC. Sureties: William Locke, Benjamin Stevens. Payments to: John Chesley, James Black, Capt. John Hicks, Charles Calvert, Henry Gibbons, Joseph Edwards, Luke Barber, Susanna Wilson. Exec: Lettice Stevens. (Skinner). William Locke and Susanna Stephens had a son named William and I believe he's the one who moved to Granville County, NC. It fits. They also had a son named Philip. William Locke, Sr. died here: 3/10/1761--5/19/1761: Admin. accts. of William Lock, SMC. Appraisers: George Burroughs and Benjamin Edwards. Creditors: Meverell Lock and James Forbes. NOK: Meveral Locke (his brother) and William Locke (his son). Adm: Philip Locke. (Skinner). Do you have any documentation for James Hulse Locke or his family? Linda Reno -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2011 4:51 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MDSTMARY] William LOCK/LOCKE & Eleanor. Hi Linda. All I have is that he was said to be s/o James Hulse LOCKE (b. ca. 1695 SMC to bet. 1780-1782 Halifax Co NC) & Susannah STEVENS (m. @ SMC ca. 1717)per LOCKE research. Question: (Was she possibly a d/o Benjamin & Lettice?) James Hulse/Hulls Locke/Lock had received part of a plantation called "Good Pennyworth."(SMC?) from his father, Philip Locke's will. Philip LOCKE (ca. bef. 1660, NJ? to Mar 1717/18-Aug. 1722 SMC) James Hulse Locke, s/o Philip LOCKE & Mary HULSE/HULLS (d/o Meverell HULSE/HULLS & MARY "Pearle??" or "Peate"??) is said to have passed away around 1780-1782 in Halifax Co. NC. NOTE: **This is confusing as the family lore says James Hulse Locke ALSO married to another woman named Susannah STEPHENS abt 1740 in SMC(different spelling.) I am not sure about this as this could just be the same woman with a varied spelling??? Anyway, he had several children in SMC before removing to Halifax Co NC in th 1760's with Edwards, Suite, Moran and a few other SMC families. The children I have listed for James Hulse Locke & Susanna Stevens, I: 1. James LOCKE, b. aft. 1718 SMC to d. bef. 1816, date unknown. He m. Susanna GREENE/GREEN (d.ca. 1823), d/o Henry GREEN. 2. John/Jonathan LOCKE, b.ca. 1722 SMC to d. May 1789 Halifax Co NC. He m. Sarah LNU (Suit?). She lived b. bef 1731 SMC & d. bet. 1767 - 1774. Halifax Co NC. Maybe some Locke researchers have more info. I really wish I knew more. I even wonder if the Susannah Suite and John Suite were not children of Richard SUITE, d. 1801 and a first wife, not Rebeckah. We know Richard lived in Halifax Co NC. But no proof yet. I wish Richad had named his children in his will. Looks like there might have been another line of Abell's that went to Nelson Co., KY ant maybe that line is Phillip Abell, son of Cuthbert Abell and Mary Clarke. I can't find anyone who can prove children for this Phillip. Of course maybe he died and didn't leave any kids and I am all wet on my theory. Now up to proving something on this line. I can't place the Ann Abell who married Jacob King Mar 22 1797 in Bardstown records that was just mentioned either and it could be amistake as explained. John Able who married Susannah Morgin July 3 1797 is another I can't find anything on. Robert M Abell who married Brittania S Milbourne July 12 1852 is another. Margt Abell who married John Webb Mar 3 1816 is another.Lucy Abell who married William Hill Aug 13 1813 is another. Susan Abell who married George Read Sept 30 1819 is another. Anne Abell who married James Stuart Mar 13 1786 is another.  There are others but I can't find that page in my stack of Abell's. This list is one of my most enjoyable I belong to. So many knowledgable and helpful folks. Through this list I finally after years broke down my Walker line that lived in Hardin Co., KY and of course my worked goes against the grain of other Walker researchers of the same line so mostly I keep my work at home and hope sometime others can see the light and help porve or disprove my work. 1. [MDSTMARY] LOCKE in SMC & NC vs. LEAKE/LAKE in SO CO MD & SUIT/SUITE in SMC vs. JUETT/DUETT/DUITT/JUET, etc in SO CO MD
    2. My SUITE family is intermarried with LOCK/LOCKE both in Southern MD and Halifax & Granville NC. I was working on the family of James Hulse Locke's son William who had a daughter named Rhoda LOCKE/LOCK, b.aft 1751 prob. St. Mary's Co MD. This LOCKE line moved to Halifax Co NC in the 1760's. I "think" I may have found a weird twist in the spelling of the surnames in Somerset Co MD. I wondered why I couldn't find information on Nathaniel and William Suit in my family. I stumbled onto information of a man named William JUETT who spelled his name as JUET/JUETT/JUITT/DUITT/DUETT etc. so we are not sure who he was. His wife was probably surnamed Whittington. I believe he was the William SUITE in the 1726 deposition in Charles Co MD with a man named Cropper. We also find the Cropper family in Somerset Co MD. This William JUETT and wife Mary (possibly Whittington) had a daughter also named Rhoda around 1750-1760 who lived until 1809. Here is the interesting part in my opinion: Rhoda JUETT married a man named Capt. Henry LEAKE/LAKE, III of Somerset Co MD. (There is apparently a LAKE graveyard there whre they are buried.) I think this Rhoda JUETT's family are possibly a "missing" part of my SUIT/SUITE family from Charles Co MD. The names and marriages all seem to fit! Then, I found the descendants of James Hulse/Hulls Locke/Lock's son, William Locke, from St. Mary's Co MD who removed to Halfax Co NC also named a daughter Rhoda LOCK/LOCKE. This LOCKE family is also quite intermarried with my SUITE/SUIT family!!! LOCKE vs.LAKE/LEAKE/lLEAK/LEAKE are most similar with name & meaning. The name is now apparently LAKE in DO & SO Counties of MD. Capt. Henry Leake/Lake, III was a blacksmith and s/o Henry LEAKE, II, (also a blacksmith) b.ca. 1698-1699, d. 21 Apr 1760, SO CO MD, & his wf, Mary (MNU). He was said to be s/o Henry Leake/Lake, I, (b.abt. 1659-d.abt. 1725) SO CO MD & wife Mary Cooke (b.ca. 1659, d.ca. Bef. 24 Aug 1745). They were both servants of a man named Thos. Cottingham and the y m. 25 Dec 1683 in SO CO MD. He must've lived in Anne Arundel Co MD and when he died, his wife was "Elizabeth". He may have been s/o Henry Leake/Lake, I who had a headright in Accomack VA 1641, but not proven. There is a story about the LAKE family by Carson Gibb PhD entitled ORIGIN OF THE LAKES OF DORCHESTER COUNTY MD By Carson Gibb, PhD. & Dr. Gibb said he couldn't find probate reocrds for Henry II, but I think he was probably the one in AA CO MD. It is something to think about "IF" this Henry Leak/Lake family is part of the same family as Philip Locke. Especially "IF" the Philip line came from NJ as the DNA is suggesting. I have no proof, but it is something interesting to wonder if the LEAKE/LAKE folks ont the Eastern Shore of MD are the same family as LOCKE/LOCK on the Western Shore of MD. And if the JUETT/DUETT (etc.) family on the Eastern Shore is not perhaps the same family as SUIT/SUITE on the Western Shore. My family has all the same first names, especially Nathaniell. Weathrington is near my SUIT family in St. Mary's Co. and Whittington is part of the SO CO family. Rebecca Mister married his son Nathaniel Juett. My SUITE family is also intermarried with Mister from Calvert Co. And the LEAKE marriage with JUETT vs. LOCK/LOCKE marriages (several) with SUITE/SUIT in MD & NC makes me wonder. Just something to consider... Bonnie Treon

This consent was filed by mother of bride Margaret Higgeuns. Peter Abell's Nelson Co. will of 1785 names 12 children. I show Ann Abell who married Jacob King dau. of Pvt. George Abell and Elizabeth Crawford. His Nelson County will dated 9 Apr 1804. Robert Monroe Abell b. 1827, m. Of the Philip of Cuthbert and Mary Clarke Abell I show his marriage at St Paul's Parish, Baltimore Co., p371 13 May 1799 to Priscilla Freeman. (my last confirmed record). 1. [MDSTMARY] William LOCK/LOCKE & Eleanor.
    2. 2. He m. 2nd to Elizabeth "Betty" Unknown in 1774. May be the one who went to KY? 3. Philip LOCKE, b.1723-1730 SMC to d. unknown. Went to Halifax Co NC with family. Moved to Stokes Co NC. 4. William LOCKE/LOCK, b.ca. 1730 SMC to d. Bet. 20 Apr 1793 - Aug 1803 either in Halifax or Granville Co NC, m. Eleanor LNU who was b.ca. 1730, prob. 3. I should have said the precursor convent bldg begun in 1808 by Father Nerinckx next to St. Stephens, burned. Little Loretto est 1812-1821 was moved to the Motherhouse est 1824. St. Ann's, Holy Cross, St. Michael's, all est. bef. 1800 and early registers of priests prior to 1807 are the missing baptisms that may have been lost. Motherhouse received misc records from churches as late as 1874. See 2008 Guide. -----Original Message----- From: Jackie King <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2011 3:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Abell in Nelson Co., KY I can't find the date right now ...but the motherhouse wasn't even built until after 1812 when the first of the sisters took their vows and the sisters of Loretto order was founded. The archives of Notre Dame have some Catholic records from the area including some letters of Father Badin. I do know that among the records lost in the fire were many of the records and artifacts from the foundresses and early sisters of the order. Jackie On 1/16/2011 11:57 AM, K. 3. Yes, several years ago I contacted the Motherhouse and that is where the baptismal records of the first several births of my ancestors children were found.. They may have lived in Washington Co for a while because his wife came from there but I have not found anything to tie them there except the baptismal records. Census records show them in Green Co till abt 1834 .Plus my ancestors baptismal an his being converted to Catholicism after a daughter was born and we think she may have died and that was when he converted. That helped me prove that his line was not always Catholic and it was his wife who was the Catholic and he was the convert. ----- Original Message ----- From: "K.
