You folks are really great ! I am going to call her {wife #2} a Thompson, but note that some sources show her as an Abell. That way, a future researcher should be alerted to the potential conflict of information. I have only one more First Lady Lady item on tap for our series in the "Generator" on the 3 First Ladies w/ Southern Maryland ancestry: the connection between General "Dick" Taylor's daughter to the McIlhenny Tobasco sauce people at Avery Island, Louisiana. The 3 First Ladies have been: Mrs. General U. S. Grant; Mrs. John Quincy Adams; & Mrs. General Zachary Taylor. We carried the Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams line the farthest - to her uncle Gov. Thomas Johnson of Maryland & down to the line to historian Henry Adams, who spoke of his "quarter taint" of Maryland blood. If there are any others, please let me know. "Famous People" series - I am starting with Archbishop Spalding; I am planning on including Don Mattingly, Paris Hilton, Roy Rogers, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, Bishop Fenwick of Boston, Barton W. Stone {a founder of the Disciples of Christ/Christian Church} .... who else would you suggest ? Who am I missing ? I'm looking for people w/ roots in St. Mary's County - or Charles &/or Calvert - but would like at least some connection to St. Mary's. Again, the commercial ! Hi David, I had this notation. The following article was copied from Our Faith and Its Defendes by John Gilmary Shea, LL.D., page 77, 1872, Kentucky: Most Rev. Martin John Spalding, Second Bishop of Louisville, Seventh Archbishop of Baltimore. Martin John Spalding was born May 23 1810, on the Rolling Fork, Kentucky, where his grandfather, Benedict Spalding, had settled in 1790 when he came from St. Mary's County, Maryland. Both his parents, Richard Spalding and Henrietta Hamilton, were natives of that old Catholic county. THANKS to everyone who answered or suggested an answer to my query on Richard Spalding's 2nd wife. If you are not a member of the St. Mary's County Genealogical Society, please consider joining us & contributing to the "Generator." Thanks again, everybody ! http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=46316368 This should get you to Mary Spalding, Richard's 3rd wife. The notes Mrs. Wathen posted indicate that she was a Mrs. Adams when she married Richard. I assume a widow - Richard now had been widowed twice. David
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=46301779 This should get you to "Henny" - wife #2 of Richard Spalding & 1st step-mother of Archbishop Spalding. Mrs. Wathen states she was born in Charles County & gives her parents. Do you all agree ? The Abell link didn't give her any parents, but stated she was an Abell born in St. Mary's. If her father was a Thompson, she wasn't a Miss Abell who had married a Thompson before she m. the widower Richard Spalding in 1817. David
