    1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Aloysius Benedict Wathen & Mary Olive Jenkins

    3. Mike, I don't know that I can help you with your question, but I would like to know more about Mary Olive Jenkins. I have been doing some research for a family member on the Jenkins family who were around the time of your gg-grandparents marriage living in Charles County probably what likely was near the Roman Catholic, Mattawoman, Charles County. Have you heard of Llewelyn Jenkins married 1st to Lucinda and second to Mary M Freeman. Llewellyn Jenkins believed to be the son of William E Jenkins and Eleanor Wilcox. Any of these names ring a bell? Now, for the little bit I know about the churches of Charles County. When it says Mattawoman, that could conceivable cover a large area. What we have now is called the Mattawoman and covers a good part of the county. So, do you have any idea where they lived, possibilities could be Waldorf, Middleton, Bryantown to name a few. There is a church at Bryantown, Charles County, MD that was Roman Catholic and would have been around during that time. Unforturnately, if that is the one, the church had a fire in the 1960's I believe and all the records were destroyed. That church is now called St Mary's Catholic Church, Bryantown. Then there is another church a little closer to Waldorf called St. Peter's Catholic church that has been around since the 1700's. It is still an active church. I do not know anything about their records. Of course, they could have been married in a church that no longer exists. Don't know if any of this helps but it might give you some leads. 3. Scanned to Word in color, then copy and paste to msg body. Not in printed form, BUT! THE SANDYLAND CHRONICLE THE FORGOTTEN ANIMAL (Author Unknown) (from the 3-31-1938 issue of The Nevada County Picayune) Oh, horse, you are a wonderful brute, No button to push, no horn to toot. You start yourself; no clutch to slip, No sparks to miss, no gears to strip. No license to buy for you every year, No plates to screw on front and rear. No gas bills climbing on you each day To steal the joys of life away. Your inner tubes are all o.k. And thank the Lord, they stay that way. Your spark plugs never miss or fuss, Your motor never makes a cuss. Your frame is good for many a mile, Your body never changes style. You carry the husband, children, and wife, A very safe way to go through life. All you need is com and hay To carry you from day to day. A very slow way, each day of the year, But safe and sound, don't ever fear. Your wants are few and easy met, You've something on the auto yet.

    3. Pat: I don't know if you sent a copy to the St. Mary's County Historical Society or not. You might check w/ them directly. We - the Genealogical Society - publish a list of our new books in the "Generator." Our books are available to the public at the Leonardtown Branch, St. Mary's County Memorial Library - six days a weeks - whenever the Library is open. I believe Sarah Fitzgerald received an up-date of our new books from our Librarian {Joan} & we will be printing that on Thursday, when this issue of the "Generator" is put together. I'll let you know after Thursday if you have sent us - the St. Mary's County Genealogical Society - any of your books since we published Joan's previous list in the Fall "Generator." None of your books were listed in the Fall issue - printed in September - for items received over the Spring & Summer. If you haven't sent us copies, I am sure we would appreciate receiving them - and so would the users at the Leonardtown Library. 3. Thanks again Linda. I knew you had a source, I just didn't know what it was. I can't figure out why Susan Milburn Howard wasn't in the 1870 census either. I don't see her listed at all. But then my own father and his family were missed entirely in the 1930 census, so I know the census takers weren't infallible. The most recent records I can find on Ancestry for any descendant of this family is the World War II draft card for Felix Alfred Howard (born 30 Apr 1879, son of Leonard Joseph Howard & Susan M Milburn) in 1942, and the SS death record for Felix Alfred's daughter Myra Rebstock in Jan 1987 in Baltimore. In the 1840 census he and Jane Maryman had 2 hildren, a boy and a girl, both born between 1831-1835. 3. Death of Leonard Howard, Jr.: Washington, D.C. Estate Records, 1801-1862 (Pippinger); estate of Leonard Howard dated 4/15/1817. 1/8/1823: Admin. accts. of Leonard Howard, SMC. Admin.: William B. Scott. Widow: Eleanor Wimsatt, wife of Lewis Wimsatt. Residue: Brother, Joseph. (SMC Balances and Distributions). Joseph William Howard was living with his brother, Leonard Joseph Howard in 1860 (St. Mary's Co.). No idea why his name was given as Leonard R. Howard and an even better question is why wasn't Susan Milburn (his wife) and the children listed with Leonard Joseph Howard in 1870--but they weren't. Below are the only children I have for Joseph A. Howard and Jane Maryman. Linda Reno Descendants of Joseph A. Howard Generation No. 1 1. JOSEPH A.7 HOWARD (LEONARD6, GEORGE5, IGNATIUS4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born 1808 in St. Mary's Co., MD, and died Aft. 1850 in St. Mary's Co., MD. He married (1) ELIZABETH FENWICK 20 Feb 1827 in St. Mary's Co., MD. She was born Bet. 1808 - 1812 in St. Mary's Co., MD, and died 10 Mar 1827 in St. Mary's Co., MD. He married (2) JANE MARYMAN 10 Feb 1831 in St. Fr. Xav. RCC, Compton, St. Mary's Co., MD, daughter of JOSEPH MARYMAN and SUSANNA MORGAN. She was born 1814 in St. Mary's Co., MD, and died Aft. 1850. Children of JOSEPH HOWARD and JANE MARYMAN are: i. LEONARD JOSEPH8 HOWARD, b. 23 Jun 1833, St. Mary's Co., MD; d. 23 Oct 1878, St. Mary's Co., MD; m. SUSAN M. How was the date of death arrived at? I was looking this morning at census records for Joseph A Howard, the son of Leonard Howard Sr. & Ann Steel. In the 1840 census he and Jane Maryman had 2 children, a boy and a girl, both born between 1831-1835. In the 1850 census he lists his occupation as sailor, and they had 3 children: Jane A born 1836, Albert born 1843 and Joseph born 1846. The family doesn't appear in the 1860 census, but it looks like the youngest son Joseph is living with a Leonard R Howard, age 26, and his wife. 1. [MDSTMARY] More Payne Genealogy
    2. Since we were discussing the Payne line and I descend from the Virginia Payne's through John Payne and his wife Margaret Robinson/Jennings through their son John, Jr that married Anne Walker, daughter of Col. John Walker by his first wife wife who is unknown. This article also mentions Edwin Conway and Martha Eltonhead and Henry Thacker who are also my grandparents but also mentions connections to other Paynes. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/th/read/PAYNE/2000-03/0953827484 Patrick Payne has mentioned primary records of Sir Robert Payne of St. Noet's, Hunts, that purchased his land there in 1590 from Sir Henry Darcy and his wife Catherine (nee Fermor) widow of Michael Paultney of Leicestershire. Michael Paultney was also the father of Margaret wife of Sir Thomas Payne from whom the Payne's of Suffolk are known to be descended. Marianne Dillow Illinois

I have a daughter Appalonia for him. >From the Carberry case, which has a transcription of Peter Carberry's will, the above Leonard Howard is called Leonard Howard Sen. On the date of the case in 1815 "a certain" Leonard Howard had recently married Peter Carberry's daughter Eleanor. In Peter's will of 1811 Eleanor was not yet 16. So I'm assuming this Leonard Howard was probably the son of Leonard Howard Sen. and Appalonia Brown. Is this correct? Did Leonard & Appalonia have other children? 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Payne Genealogy
    2. Hi Patricia, I believe 2004 is the last big witeup I have seen of Patrick Payne's work and it has been awhile since I was in touch with him. I am thinking he might have taken leave from the Payne DNA testing also. I don't know if this link will work or not. If not google Patrick Payne and Suffolk Payne's, This specific PDF is entitled 'An Argument in Support of Family Traditon" if you can't open it on this site. http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:wW8M14yj4qgJ:home.earthlink.net/~ppayne1203/old%2520site/patrick-payne.doc+Patrick+Payne+and+Suffolk+Paynes+v&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESi374G6ilvjqgJBtyDlctglw_nPTUmyEpfT1AFBv-AaW6hqlplgIVzqPT3sBSzWxbPREHO7uaAyeTwJz6GBED9RQwYjFQuxNJVC3jH_01wnT9_sjPFPu0lMjpSG_UHbkLx4n9eH&sig=AHIEtbS-WvzanYqea1JW8q_iuaznJl4GuQ. 1. [MDSTMARY] Payne Genealogy
    2. I descend from grandparents John Payne of Red House known as the 1st generation of The Paynes of Virginia by Brooke Payne and his wife Martha Robinson/Jennings and also Martha Eltonhead that married Edwin Conway, Sr. Patrick Payne is my source and has shared his work with many of us through routine genealogy research and DNA testing. His conclusions are as follows that he has shared with us in the past . The last I have saw was in 2004. : New Evidence that John Payne (ca 1615-1689/90) of Westmoreland Co., Va descended from the Huntingdonshire Payne Family. Robert Payne, Salter and Citizen of London, in his will of 1622 mentions his brother Florentine Payne. Also his nephew's son, John Withers. John Withers is closely associated with my grandfather John Payne of Red House. John Payne had close ties to the Lee's of Virginia. Richard Lee I was in partnership with Florentine Payne who was a Burgess in Elizabeth City, Va. The John & Dorothy in 1635 sailed from London to Va, John Payne of Red House as Commannder. He had transported goods to Adam and Sir John Thourogood, guardian of Anne Constable. She became the wife of Florentine Payne, a business partner of Richard Lee I. John Payne of the John & Dorothy was also known as a partner of the brothers Joseph and Nathaniel Hawes of London. Their brother-in-law was Capt. George Payne who married Rachel Hawes. George was also a partner of the Hawes brothers and ended up bailing John Payne out of his 1635 voyage by buying the ship so John could pay the crews wages. There is a will 1662/3 of George Payne of London that mentions his cousins , Robert and John Payne of St. Noets, Huntingdonshre, England. On 20 Feb 1662, two years before the death of Richard Lee I, John Paine , patented 88 acres along Dividing Creek , and on 1 June 1664 , he patented 406 acres in Northumnbeland Co., Va, bordering Richard Lee I. John Payne was the father of William Payne who married (2nd) to Elizabeth Pope and in his will 31 Jan 1697/8 appointed Richard Lee guardian to my children. This was Richard Lee II. Now enters the Eltonhead's. Richard Lee II married Lettice, dau of Henry Corbin and Alice Eltonhead (sister to my grandmother Martha Eltonhead) These lines in England leads from the Corbins to Sir John Paultney. The Paultney's were cousins of the Suffolk Payne family to which William Payne died 1660 of Boston belonged. That leads to Col. John Washington and the Pope's and the Gerard's. Our Eltonhead line has Gerard grandparents in England with descendants coming to Maryland. Alice Eltonhead, kin to William Eltonhead that died 1655 offer some paths to the Sufolk Paynes in England. Before moving to moving to St. Mary's Co., Md. the Eltonhead's had lived on Virginia's Eastern shore in Northanpton Co., Va where Col. Edmund Scarburgh stood as security for the personal appearance of William Eltonhead at court . William failed to appear and Col. Scarburgh paid 909 lbs of tobacco. On 22 July 1653, William Eltonhead witnessed an indenture between Argol Yeardley (Adam Thouogood's father-inlaw).. The Suffolk Payne's have connections here. There is so much more but the will of Robert Payne, the Salter, in 1622 names Florentine Payne, my brother, John Withers, my sister's son, William Paine, my brother's son, brother Thomas and his son John, cosen Agnes Thourogood, brother Thomas, George Payne, John, , my mother-in-law Anne Payne, etc. Credit given to Chuck Owens a John Payne descendant from Virginia: " There is a possibility that John Payne was descended from or was connected to The Hampshire Payne family since Robert Payne the Salter mentioned in his 1622 will, the town of Basingstoke which is in county Hampshire and left a considerable sum to that town. he also mentioned his brother Florentine Payne which is associated with that family. There could be a connection between St. Noet's , Huntingdonshire since it was 100 miles north, perhaps there was a connection between the Hampshire and Huntingdonshire families. Florentine Payne had connections with the Lee family in Virginia just as John Payne of Virginia did." A lot of connections here to think about. Marianne Dillow Illinois
