Hi list, Not sure we should count Lord William Baldridge as a sheriff of St. Mary's county since he served on Kent Island under that scourge of Maryland, the infamous William Claiborne, as a Virginian. We all know that the "real" Maryland Provence began with the Ark and Dove Adventurers and those Kent Island people were the bad guys. See http://www.queenannessheriff.org/history-of-agency.html There is a nice account of the Baldridge brothers James and Thomas in Harry Wright Newman's "The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate", p168 and on. Nice job Betty! Justinian Tennison Justinian TENNIS the elder was in Northumberland County, Virginia by 1650, at which time John MOTTROM patented 250 acres who had the rights on assignment from Justinian TENNIS who transported 5 persons into the colony. Justinian TENNIS is last found in Northumberland Co. on 10 April 1666 when he was appointed a constable. In Sep. 1668 Justinian DENNIS of St. Mary's County, Maryland demanded a warrant for 350 acres for having transported himself, Katherine his wife, Jane/Jean (spelled both ways), Barbara, Justinian, and Mary his children and William SOMERSETT his servant into the province. http://home.netcom/~fzsaund/tennison.html Source: Fredric Z. Several men ended up (or were already in) what would eventually become Charles County. That would include William Boarman, Joshua Doyne and several others. If you have any information or stories on Sheriffs and would be willing to share, I'd love to have it. Also, we're looking for portraits and/or pictures, diaries, any memorabilia. I do have a list of the Sheriffs if you'd like to have it. As you know, there are no attachments allowed on the lists, so contact me and I'll send. Thanks for any help! My 5th great grandfather was Robert Fielding Cooke, born in St. Mary's county. One of his brothers was James Cooke, who remained in St. Mary's county. In a letter from 1827, Robert F. Cooke, in writing to James' son William H. Cooke, writes: " In them days it was the custom of the time to amuse themselves with playing cards; and many that knew nothing of letters -- or the use of the pen could play cards with great dexterity. It so happened that these good friends John McPhearson and Alexander Cooke [ Alexander was the uncle of Robert F. Cooke ] chanced to meet -- perhaps at my father's house, a civil game at cards was propsed for amusement and to pass off the time. This happened to be on the 2nd day of September in the evening, in the year of our Lord 1752, the two lads so pleased with their game they continued at play the whole night. The next day being the first day of the new stile, was the 13th day of September in the first year of my life; I being then not six months old. thus I recollect hearing the old men talk of their long game at cards from the 2nd till the 13 of the month. Mr. McPhearson married Miss. Rachel Evans, had 2 daughters and a son, and then died when your mother was very small; tho the same friendly disposition continued from the Cookes to the Widdow and orphans of their friends, which increased as their children came to the years of maturity. Your father sealed the friendly acquaintance by marrying your mother, ..... " Does anyone have any idea of the name of William H. Cooke's mother? I know quite a bit about the family, but am not yet able to locate it. If anyone wants a scan of the actual letter, which comes from the Maryland Historical Society, I'll be happy to send it by e-mail. John Cook

Barton MATTINGLY was a son of Leonard Bartholomew" Barton" Mattingly and Ann Smith daughter of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth BENDING. I also believe but can prove just yet that John B. Smith who married Elizabeth Dant 4 May 1822, Washington County, KY was also a son of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth BENDING. ….. Linda, and Jerry - I am trying to tie either SAMUEL SMITH and Elizabeth Bending, OR WILLIAM SMITH and Susanna (for sure?) French to my Smith ancestors of Loretto, Marion County. Spending months on this research, I have put together a possible scenario, and would like your opinion. I know these posts were a while ago, but any help or direction is appreciated. So many records were destroyed in the 1800-1840 years in that county, that it is almost impossible to complete the lines. HELP!! These ancestors can provide the clues to prove the parents of my gg-grandparents, William Henry Smith (1824-1883 old Chicago/Loretto area) to two Lancaster sisters (also the Loretto area, parents??) Mary “Polly” c1824-1850 and Rosella/Isabella c1830-?. The son of William Henry and Rosella was William Lancaster Smith (1861-1926) who married Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” Simms of Simmstown, daughter of John “Cutter” Simms and Sarah Cecelia Johnson. These are my gg-grandparents, buried at St. Dominic’s Cemetery in Springfield. My lines are very complete from there on down, and I can also share any Mudd data, as the Mudds of Springfield are my other gg-grandparents. Needless to say – I have not yet tackled the Lancaster connections; the Smiths have been difficult enough! I can’t thank you enough for looking this over and providing any input. Does anyone have any info on a Mildred Greenwell (b. bef 1748 d. aft 1771) who may fit this: "By his own hand, Ethelbert Cissell stated he was the son of John Cissell and Miss (her name was Mary) Newton. Just this year, one of Ethelbert's descendants died and left, via her will, a book called "Memoirs of Myself" written by Ethelbert Cissell. This is now in the hands of the St. Mary's County Historical Society. In this book he also stated that his mother's brother was Joseph Newton who married a Miss Greenwell, who had a small fortune." Mary Newton and Joseph Newton (he m. Mildred Greenwell) were the children of Clement Newton and wife, Elizabeth. Any help greatly appeciated. Thanks Randy
Hi Donn, Looks like our emails crossed paths. Here are a couple of other items to consider: 1. Joseph Newton (b. bef 1741 d. aft 1771) son of Clement Newton Jr (b. 1718 d. 1760). He and his wife Mildred had the following children Catholic Families of Southern Maryland St. Andrews Episcopal - Children of Joseph Newton and Mildred Rhodolph - 13 May 1763 John Shadrach - 1 Jan 1767 James - 11 Feb 1769 Jesuit Missions Baptisims at St. Francis Xavier: 10/12/1771: Baptism of Jeremiah Newton, son of Joseph and Mildred. GP: Richard and Cloe Clarke. (Jesuit Missions). Joseph Newton being the son of Clement Newton. GP Richard and Cloe Clark. I have a problem with Mildred being Mildred Knott daughter of William Knott and Ann Mattingly as Deci states on her web site. This girl was born between 1720 and 1737. I just think that she was a little too old for the children, the last of which was born in 1771. Also, I have this note in my file: By his own hand, Ethelbert Cissell stated he was the son of John Cissell and Miss (her name was Mary) Newton. Just this year, one of Ethelbert's descendants died and left, via her will, a book called "Memoirs of Myself" written by Ethelbert Cissell. This is now in the hands of the St. Mary's County Historical Society. In this book he also stated that his mother's brother was Joseph Newton who married a Miss Greenwell, who had a small fortune. Mary Newton and Joseph Newton (he m. Mildred Greenwell) were the children of Clement Newton and wife, Elizabeth. They had a son named Adelbert or Delbert Newton. So, I believe that Mildred was a Greenwell or maybe a widow Greenwell but I do not know who she is. 2. As for Mary Newton who married John Booth, I stronly feel that she was his second wife and they married shortly after her father wrote his will. My reasons for this are the dates of birth for John Booths children and Thomas Newton Jr.'s will. Will or Thomas Newton, Jr. signed 27 Mar 1772, proved 15 Sep 1772 ......"my three youngest Children, Equally, Viz Elizabeth Newton, Clement Newton and Mary Newton, my will and meaning is that my wife keep with her my three youngest Children till they are able to shift for themselves" Children of John Booth: Births Recorded at St. Andrews for John Booth and Mary: Elizabeth 14 Mar 1762 Jane 14 Aug 1763 Rodolph 30 Nov 1765 John Baptist 10 Mar 1768 Ann 10 Feb 1770 === 12 Jul 1772 - BP St. Francis Xavier - Mathew Booth of John and Mary - GP William Newton anbd Mary Shirley What I am wonder is .... Did Mary Newton marry John, the son of John Booth? Hugh, I've seen your post about living near the old Brogden property "Roedown" and having put together a small book on the family. Do you know the names of Rev. William Brogden's children? Obviously knowledge of some of them is extant, because it seems to be common knowledge that the grandsons lost the property. I've seen a couple of obituaries from the period, which was eloquent about Rev. Brogden's accomplishments, but list his children by number only - 2 girls and 4 boys, etc. Is there any credible source that actually lists the children by name with what became of them? I'm specifically interested in whether the Elizabeth Brogden who married Thomas Walker Jan 22, 1788 (Brumbaugh) or 19 Mar 1778 (Barnes) is the daughter of Rev. William Brogden. Time and place make it possible. Also, in 1801, Thomas William Walker of Anne Arundel Co for $250 sells to William Brogden of Anne Arundel Co 26 slaves as well as other household and farm property. Anything you have that might elaborate on this relationship would be appreciated. Jackson H. Day, D.
