Richard Oakley Hi Linda, Source for dau. Mamie, Fresco, P. 428. Source for DOB and DOD for Violetta and the DOD for W. Richard Oakley - This info is from a Higgs family bible. This bible is in the possession of a descendant of Sophia E. Higgs. It was looked at by a cousin who transcribed the information. The bible is badly damaged and some info was not readable. The bible includes a death notice for "W Richard Oakley, died 2 Oct 1833 in the 52 year of his age, funeral 31 Oct." and the birth and death dates for Violetta Oakley. This is newly obtained info for me and I am going to try and get photos of the pages. Another interesting tidbit I have recently uncovered.... Sophia E. Higgs, wife of John Tracy, was born 29 Jul 1829 and died 20 Feb 1859. She is burried at Christ Church Cementary, Chaptico. John Tracy's first wife and mother of his daughter Caroline, is Mary Eleanor ______ Tracy, who is also buried at Christ Church, died Feb 1850. This info comes from descendants of Emily Tracy, daughter of John Tracy and Sophia Higgs. I have 2 separate sources for this info and both are identical. Again, I have asked for copies of the bible pages. Once I have confirmed the info for Sophia E. Higgs, this will pretty much solve the mystery of her being the widow of Wilson Higgs because she would have been too young to be his wife or the mother of Alfred Turner Higgs, who was born in July 1842. Do you have any info for the parents of W. Richard Oakley and his siblings? 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Samuel Norris - Son of Edmund Norris, Jr.
    2. Linda Reno
    3. Randy, According to my files: Samuel Norris died in 1830. His wife was Ann Harriett Norris, b. 1789 and she was the daughter of Mark Norris and his first wife, Elizabeth (she may have been a Woodward). Ann Harriett Norris m. first, Joseph Wheatley on 9/21/1811 at St. Francis Xavier RCC. Joseph Wheatley died 5/14/1817. You say Ann Harriett died before 1850 but I show her living as late as 1867 when she applied for a pension based on the service of Joseph Wheatley during the War of 1812. In 1850, she was living with her sister, Anastasia (Wheatley) Peake. Will of Samuel Norris, SMC, 9/2/1829-10/30/1830 (EJM #1, fol. 155). Wife: Ann Norris, all of the property that I have which includes one black horse; one yoke of oxen; two cows; two heifers; 13 hogs; and my household and kitchen furniture. Executor: Wife, Ann Norris. Witnesses: Raphael Combs, Joseph Heard, Clement Norris (of Joseph). NOTE: Joseph Heard, one of the near relations of Samuel Norris, was present on the date of probate and made no objection to the will being probated. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1821-1835 by Linda Reno). 3. 1850 Census Granville Co., NC is a Wesley Suit 55 blacksmith. Living with him is a wife, 7 children including Susan 17 and a Tinsley Oakley 22, wheelwright. There are 5 other Oakley households in Granville Co. & 25 in Person Co., NC. I see 28 Oakley/Oakly marriages in Granville between 1785-1867 and 35 marriages in Person 1800-1867. There are more in other counties. If you give me which names and/or dates you are interested in I wll see what I can find. 3. Maybe Joseph Fogle & Joseph Clarke went to the county seat & posted bond in April but it might have been December before the traveling priest came by & formalized the marriage. Thats why sometimes you will see several marriages & baptisms on the same date, in the early years. When did S.T. Badin come to this area? I think the priests from Louisville served that area early on then St. Clare in Hardin Co. began serving them about 1830. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 8:03 AM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Margaret Clark > Checked the register and it does list the marriage as 14 December 1801, > however you should be aware that the register was created in the mid > 1800's > and was compiled from the slips of paper that the ministers returned to > the > clerk. Checked the register and it does list the marriage as 14 December 1801, however you should be aware that the register was created in the mid 1800's and was compiled from the slips of paper that the ministers returned to the clerk. 1. [MDSTMARY] Question on "State of His Lordship's Manors" & more Howards
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GayleLonderee Surnames: Howard, Ford Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.maryland.counties.stmarys/4526/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a question about how to interpret the listings in the "State of His Lordship's Manors 1766-1768" in the book Catholic Families of Southern Maryland. For example this one from Beaverdam: 45. (Date of Lease)Dec. 25, 1741: (To Whom Leased) Thomas Howard; (No. of Acres) 80 1/4; (Tenant in Possession) Athanatius Ford; (Annual Rent) 0-8-9; (Alienation Fine/Fines Due) 1-14-0; ("On what Lives or terms of Years" "now held") William Howard, Thomas Howard, Nicholas Howard; (Ages of the Persons mentioned in the Lease and other remarks) William 40, Thomas 28, Nicholas 30. Does this mean that the original lease was made to a Thomas Howard in 1741, that his heirs would be William, Thomas and Nicholas? But the person actually working the farm was Athanatius Ford? I notice that Athanatius Ford was also the tenant in possession in three other neighboring tracts, one of which he had leased himself in 1762. I noticed in the archives in 2005 that there was a speculation that this Thomas Howard would be the right age to be the one who went to Kentucky. Has anyone come up with an alternate Thomas? This William may also be a possibility for my "Unknown William Howard" records. 1760 (Chronicles of St. Mary's, 30 Jan 2001, page 97, Papist Lands Tax)[although I think this is probably still the estate of William Howard who died in 1753] - William Howard.............. D.* To pomphrey Fields.............................100 1760 - Maryland Catholic Subscribers to Boston Relief-1760 - William Howard appears on list 11 Sep 1765 - William Howard is mentioned in Administrative Accounts of Edward Cole 1765 - William Howard is mentioned in Administrative Accounts of Edward Burch 26 Feb 1767 - William Howard is mentioned in Administrative Accounts of John Dant 9 Dec 1769 - William Howard is on the List of Debts for Philip Key 9 March 1775 - William Howard of St. Mary's Cty.: Bond of William Dunlap as administrator of estate of William Howard, late of St. Mary's Cty. 3. Hi Linda, Source for dau. 3. Randy, A couple of questions, please: Source for exact dob and death for Violetta? What record did you find for the death of W. Richard Oakley? I have Philip Melton born about 1793, this is based on census records and also that he served in the War of 1812. I have him buried March 15, 1864. Did find a couple of deeds in Charles County this morning (they give Violetta's middle name): 1/13/1843: Deed fom Henry Bradford Goodwin and his wife, Susan Ann Goodwin of Charles Co. to Violetta Thompson Oakley of Charles Co. for $40 pt. of "Mount Pleasant", no acreage given but described metes and bounds, mentioned was the division line between John Parnham and John Knott. (Charles County Deeds, JB 25, 265). 4/27/1852: Deed from Philip Melton and his wife, Violetta Thompson Melton of St. Mary's Co. to Henry Bradford Goodwin of Charles Co. for $250 pt. of "Mount Pleasant", no acreage given but described metes and bounds, mentioned was the division line between John Parnham and John Knott. 3. Tom, Thanks for the info. I do not have Bennet Stone married to Teresa Simms either. The deed, JFF12-463, as I abstracted it says: "This land was conveyed to William Hayden by Bennent Stone and wife and Teresa Simms (JH11-479), 12 Nov 1839, where William Stephen Hayden currently resides." So, Bennet and his wife conveyed the land along with Teresa Simms to William Hayden. Not sure why Teresa was included in the deed since she was not the reason I was looking at this and I did not go pull the referenced deed, JH11-479, to figure out why. But seeing that John Simms was involved, Teresa's father, as shown in your abstract, I can now understand why. I was actually trying to figure out why William S. and Charlotte E. A. Hayden would convey land to the children of James Robert Higgs. Perhaps they were just good friends since I have not found any relationship between them. I had a Charlotte Hayden in my files but did not have her listed as Charlotte E. A. so I was a little confused. Linda srtaighted me out on that one.
