Mike: By now you ought to have the Summer 2011 "Generator." Do you share any lines with Archbishop Spalding ? {A'bishop of Baltimore: 1864-1872} I'm hoping to get some info on his MacAtee lines in Charles County for a future "Generator." The new Bishop in Evansville sure sounds like he has roots back here in Southern Maryland. Wade: Any ideas on this ? I understand that the new Episcopal bishop for the Washington Diocese {includes Prince George's, Charles, & St. Mary's} will be a woman. Keep us posted with what you find out, Mike. Dear Dave, In my working files, I see that the Richard Spalding (16 April 1777 - 7 Sept. 1850) who was father of Martin J. Spalding, Archbishop of Baltimore Maryland married Henrietta "Henny" Thompson 20 Jan. 1817 at the Holy Name of Mary Church, Marion Co., KY ( Washington County Marriage Records: Spalding; Richard to Henny Thompson 1/17/1817). Richard Spalding's daughter Julia Ann Spalding became a nun, Mother Julia ( I do not have proof of the order) but I did find the following which offer clues to McAtee and Thompson relationships to Archbishop Spalding: Holy Name Of Mary Church Records: p.21 Martin John Spalding, Calvary's best known native, was born May 23, 1810; the same year that the Spalding home on Lover's Lane was built. His father Richard, eldest son of Benedict Spalding, who came here from Maryland and settled on the Rolling Fork in 1790. His mother was Henrietta Hamilton, daughter of Leonard Hamilton, likewise from Maryland, who came to Kentucky in 1791. His mother died when he was just six years old.... in 1850 Martin John became Bishop of Louisville. SPALDING, RICHARD AUGUSTINE & HENRIETTA HAMILTON (son of Benedict Joseph Spalding, Jr. & Alethaire Abell)(daughter of Leonard Hamilton & Ann "Nancy"McAtee)(married 7-28-1801 at Holy Name of Mary Church) Baptized Martin Spalding, 6-04-1810, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Birth date not given. Sponsors, Martin Heutz and Mary Ford. Father Spalding became Bishop of Louisville in 1850, & Archbishop of Baltimore in 1864. Two of Bishop Spalding's sister became nuns. His younger brother, Benedict Joseph & his nephew, John Lancaster Spalding both became priests. A cousin Catharine Spalding, was Mother Superior of the Sisters of Nazareth in nearby Nelson County. Hi Will, Son of Peter Cartwright and Judith Sye: MATTHEW CARTWRIGHT, b. Bet. 1708 - 1713, St. Mary's Co., MD; d. 1772, Fairfax Co., VA; m. MARY CARTER, Bef. 1733, MD; b. Does your bounce list the reason as it was blocked by SORBS? It's a spam company that sometimes gets over agressive in blocking submissions to all rootsweb mail lists, sometimes blocking whole ISPs. It usually only lasts for a few hours to a day, so you have to just keep resending until SORBS lifts the block. I've had it happen on and off on various rootsweb lists for the past couple years. Thanks Linda and List. I am just beginning to put together the family of William Higgs and am starting to believe that he is the progenitor of the Higgs family in SMC but still have too many unanswered questions to prove it. I do not show 3 chrildren for John Higgs (b. 1703). I show Samuel Higgs Sr. born about 1708, so, he could not be the son of John Higgs (b. 1703). I also show Zachariah Higgs, Sr. born abt. 1734. So, for John Higgs (b. 1703) I have his child as Zachariah Higgs, Sr. and I show Samuel Higgs, Sr (b. abt 1708) and John Higgs (b. 1703) as brothers. Additionally, I now have William Higgs, Jr. (b. abt 1701). I will followup on this in a new thread so that I can keep things straight. In the inventory of Richard Southorn, 9/8/1702, its says that William had 4 months of service remaining. Mary Palmer also had 4 months remaining so, they were most likely transported together. In fact, I wonder if these 2 married soon after this. Question: How many years of service were typical for transported servants? Randy PS. I show Issac Shemwell married to Elizabeth Thorn, dau. of William Thorn Sr., married bef 1737. Randy In Sarah Carters will written in 1733 she names Mary and Matthew Cartwright as her children. Your version does not account for these Cartwright children. She names Mary Cartwright admx, who later becomes Mary Wilks in later accountings. A Sarah Cartwright was admx of the will of John Cartwright and filed July 1710, not Margaret. As far as I know John Cartwright and wife Margaret Burroughs were alive after 1758. The inventory of the Matthew who married Elizabeth Dyson seems to show he was the Matthew Cartwright in Sarah Carters will, so he was not the child of Margaret as she was still alive in 1758, but not involved in his inventory. Randy, The earliest Higgs for whom I have a record is William Higgs who appears to have been transported by Richard Sothoron (the progenitor of the Sothoron family). 9/8/1702: Inventories & Accounts 23:173, 1702.09.08, St. Mary's County, MD. Inventory of estate of Capt. Richard Southeron, includes: Four indentured servants (Wm. Higgs, Wm. Fox, George Carter, Mary Palmer). Old negro woman Sarah. 9 cattle, 7 horses, 36 hogs, old books. Value £106.15.10. Appraised by Jacob Moorland, Henry Fowler. (Haddox Sothoron). 6/7/1715: Admin. accts. of William Summerhill, SMC. Payments to: William Thorne, John Adams, Mr. Philip Briscoe, Sr., James Summerhill, Mr. Henry Lowe, Mr. Samuel Williamson, Edward Barber, Mary Hilton, William Higgs, William Bladen, Esq., and Col. William Aisquith. Admin.: James Summerhill. William Higgs was probably the progenitor and the father of John Higgs. No direct proof, but John is associating with the same folks as William and living in the same area. John Higgs was born in 1703. 1738: Charles County Court Records, March 1738/9 Court, Liber T#2, Page 533. Pursuant to the order of last Jun CC Court, Commission issued to John Briscoe, John Chunn, Andrew Chunn, and Jno Winter, Gent, to examine witnesses touching the bounds of a tract of land lying in CC called the Desart, in possession of Jno Thorne. The Commissioners are not being any way related to the Petitioner, contiguous Proprietor, nor interested in the sd land. Signed Jun 16, 1738 - Saml Hanson, Clerk. And now here, John Chunn and Andrew Chunn return the Commission afd with the following certificate thereon endorsed and the subsequent depositions thereto annexed: We hereby certify that we took the examination of all witnesses that were nominated to us by the petitioner. Signed Feb 20, 1738 - John Chunn, Andrew Chunn. CC. The deposition of Jno Higgs, age about 33, who declares that about the year 1736, being at the house of William Thorne, decd, he, the sd Thorne, told him that he marked a hickory tree by the path leading to Thomas Swann's to know where his last bound tree of his land he lived on stood, and that there or thereabout his last bound tree stood, but was down & rotten. Signed - John (J his mark) Higgs. CC. The deposition of Elizabeth Hall, age about 27, who declares that being with William Thorn, decd, at the place where she now stands, in CC in East Newport Hundred, by a path leading to Thos: Swann's, about the year 1736, that she saw a marked hickory, and whilst sd Thorne and this deponent were by sd hickory, she heard him say that he marked the afd hickory in memorandum of his bound tree. Signed - Eliza: (E her mark) Hall. Feb 20, 1738. I have three children for John Higgs: Samuel Higgs who married Elizabeth ____. He died about 1758. 12/6/1758: Admin. accts. of Samuel Higgs, SMC. NOK: John Higgs and Zacharias Higgs. Admx.: Elizabeth Higgs. 8/7/1759: Admin. accts. of Samuel Higgs, SMC. Sureties: Isaac Shamwell, Zachariah Higgs. Received from: Isaac Shamwell, Jeremiah Higgs, John Watson. Payments to: Richard Cook, Alexander McFarlane, Samuel Briscoe, Samuel Suite, Samuel Swann, Robert Horner, James Scroggin. Distribution to: Widow, 1/3. Residue to (orphans): Susanna Higgs (at age); Eleanor Higgs (at age); Elizabeth Higgs (at age); Mary Higgs (at age); Samuel Higgs (age 16); Sarah Higgs (age 13); Jonathan Higgs (age 12); Mary Ann Higgs (age 10); Chloe Higgs (age 7). Admx.: Elizabeth Higgs. (Admin. accts. of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers, 37-45, 1754-1760 by V. L. Skinner, Jr.). NOTE: This record is not on CD #206. Zachariah (Zacharias Higgs) who married Elizabeth Clarke (her mother was Mary Sothoron, granddaughter of Richard Sothoron) and moved to Granville Co., NC. A daughter who married _____Shemwell. This girl may have been a daughter of William vs. John but the Higgs were related to the Shemwells, of that I have no doubt. Isaac Shemwell either married second, a daughter of William Thorne or he had a son, also named Isaac who did. Will of William Thorn, Charles Co., 11/22/1737; 12/15/1737, Chas. Co. Daughter: Elizabeth, my own bed and all its furniture, a set of curtains and valyons, a young mare, cow yearling, one chest, her choice of pewter dishes, a large pewter basin and her choice of iron pots. My reasoning is that this is based partly on bad information that has been arround for many, many, many years. The following is a little long winded, sorry.... Many researchers, including myself, show the following for this early Higgs family: === 1. JOHN1 HIGGS was born before 1684 in Charles County, Maryland. He died after 1706 in Charles County, Maryland. John Higgs had the following children: i. JOHN2 HIGGS was born in 1706 in Charles County, Maryland. He died after 1768 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. ii. SAMUEL HIGGS SR. was born about 1708 in Charles County, Maryland. He died before 06 Dec 1758 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He married ELIZABETH "ELIZA" HIGGS before 18 Jun 1735 in Charles County, Maryland. She was born before 1718 in Charles County, Maryland. She died after Aug 1759 in Charles County, Maryland. Note: Many say that Eliza is the widow of Richard Melton. Can this really be true? Where are Richard's children? Generation 2 2. JOHN2 HIGGS (John1) was born in 1706 in Charles County, Maryland. He died after 1768 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. John Higgs had the following child: i. ZACHARIAH3 HIGGS was born in 1734 in Charles County, Maryland. He died in Aug 1797 in Granville, North Carolina, United States. He married ELIZABETH CLARKE about 1755 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, daughter of Leonard Clarke and Mary Sothoron. She was born about 1739 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. She died in 1772 in Granville Country, North Carolina. === Part of the reason that we say John1 Higgs was the father of John2 Higgs and Samuel Higgs are these 2 land records which occur before John2 Higgs was born: === Wednesdays Project, 98 Acres; Certificate Developer/Owner: Higgs, John 1704 Patent Record EI 5, p. 13 0 0 MSA S 1598-3877 Wednesdays Project, 98 Acres; Patent Developer/Owner: Higgs, John 1704 Patent Record EI 2, p. 165 0 0 MSA S 1598-387 === These 2 records are WRONG! I went to MSA and looked are them. They were really recorded in 1734 when Patent 691 was issued. Apparently when the 2 books were indexed a typo was made. This error is also reflected in Peter Coldham's book, which may have been the original source of the error. MSA has since changed the dates from 1704 to 1734 based on my research. Patent 691 shows: 1. By virture of a Special Warrant Deed issued on 25 October 1727 in the name of John Higgs for 100A, the St. Mary's County Surveyer was orderd to lay out 100A of "Vacant" land for John Higgs. on 28 Feb 1728 the surveyor laid out the meets and bounds for Wednesdays Project. Note that the Surveyer was orderd to lay out 100A of either Cultivated or non-Cultivated land. So, at this point in time he had no knowledge of the land or its contents. This brings into mind the question, "Why was John Higss issued a Special Warranty Deed for 100A" ? 2. The land was surveyed on 26 Feb 1728 and a Certificate of Survey issued on 10 May 1729. 3. John Higgs received Patent number 691 for 98A located on Chaptico Bay, in Chaptico Manor part of Chaptico Hundred, on 12 Jun 1734. Note that the Patent record descibes the land as being Cultivated. It has a house in "Sorry" condition along with 2 tobaco barns, a corn field fenced, in and a small orchid field containing about 30 apple trees. The land sits next to the land owned by Thomas Notley Goldsmith, named Hepworth (Hepwork). So, John2 Higgs was born before 1706. There are no land records for John1 Higgs. So is there really a John1 Higgs? It is my understanding that land was no longer given to those who were transported or immigrated after about 1680. If so, why would John2 Higgs be given 100A of land? Does anyone have any other proof that John1 Higgs was the father of John2 Higgs and Samuel? Lots of questions and any help is appreciated. I have been looking for several years for information on a William Edwards, Born in 1818 or there about. Supposed to have been in St Mary's Md. My records say He married a Woman Named Elizabeth and they had six children Margaret 1839, Jonathan 1842, George 1845, Marion Frances 1846-1923, Fletcher 1849, and Mary A 1852, I know they moved to Georgia and then on the Missouri then Texas what I am missing is the information before that parents, siblings etc. I do know that his daughter Margaret married a John Edwards that may have been a cousin but I have no parental info on him except that his Father was likely John as well because the younger uses Jr after his name.I would greatly appreciate any help. Hello. I don't know what is going on with the list but my last 6 emails have NOW BOUNCED. I have written to Linda to get this fixed. I even tried re-subscribing! But anyway-- here is my reply: Benjamin Suit witnessed that Edwards' 1784 will and was DEFINITELY connected to Carter, especially Jesse Carter of Caswell Co NC who was part of the large Carter family in Lancaster Co VA. But the exact connection has not been proven. Was one of his wives a Carter? Was his mother related to the Carters? etc. But we know from Thomas Suit's will that his aunt did marry a Joseph Edwards:Bet. 16 Oct 1765 - 04 Nov 1771 Linda had sent: Suite, Thomas Thomas Suite, SMC 10/16/1765-11/4/1771. Some descendants on genforum have stated he lived there for a while but I do not know where they got that information. However, he was probably the father of the Willliam Suite who owed Jesse Carter's estate money in Caswell Co NC I think it was abt. 1815 approx. William Suite & Jesse Carter were also in the 1802 estate sale of a man named Diavid Shelton in Caswell Co NC. Jesse Carter was from the Carter family of Lancaster Co. VA but had removed to Cawell Co NC where he died. The point is-- it is probably NOT a coincidence that Benjamin Suit witnessed this Edwards' will and that he is kin to the Carter family. It just has not been determined how at this point. The HARRISON familiy is also very connected to this same Jesse Carter and he was guardian to Robert L. Harrison, orphan of John. There are many missing pieces to this puzzle. I also am not entirely sure that Mary Ann Higgs was the wife of the Joseph Edwards who died in Halifax Co NC. Richard Suite witnessed his will and she may have been his daughter. These families were all intermarried and close. Unfortunately, Richard died in 1801 and his will doesn't name any of his children-- only mentions his wife Rebecca (was spelled differently) and to take care of his mother and sister who were still living. Who were they? I am going to try to get up to the NC Archives to get more information. I sent for Richard's will and estate, but the will doesn't name chldren and the estate records were weird and I don't think the ones they sent me match the Richard who died 1801. But I am keeping an open mind on the Joseph who died in Halifax for now. It is very possible she was Higgs, but the truth is we really don't know either way. Bonnie Treon

Hi List, I wonder if the father of John Higgs (b. bef 1706) and Samuel Sr. was really John Higgs. TIA Randy

Hi Folks, Sorry for the confusion. When I found that old posting in the Achieves, I was questioning my own data for Sarah Carter who married John Edwards (d. 1761). The interesting thing was the link to the Edwards Newsletter, vol. 11, where the article says that John Edwards (b. 1716 d. 1761) was the son of William Edwards, Jr. While this William did have a son named John, I do not believe they are the same. But the article does sound pretty convincing. I will leave that to the Edwards researchers. Now, back to the reason I am looking at the John Edwards (d. 1784). His father, Joseph Edwards, Sr. (d. 1746) left him a tract of land called "Edwards Backland". In the will of John Edwards (d. 1784) he leaves this tract to his wife, Sarah, along with 2 others, Wednesdays Project and Higgs His Purchase. Since these 2 tracts are not mentioned in his fathers will, I assume he aquired them some other way. I believe that John Edwards (d. 1784) married Sarah Higgs, dau. of Samuel Higgs, Sr. (d. 1758). His brother, Joseph Jr., married Mary Ann Higgs, Sarah's sister, it is not uncommon that 2 brothers married sisters. Joseph Jr. moved to NC where he died. These 2 tracts were patented to John Higgs in 1734 and 1744 respectively and were next to each other. I believe that this is the John Higgs (b. 1706) who was the father of Zachariah and the brother of Samuel Sr. (d. 1758) Zachariah packed up his family and moved to NC where many of his children married and died. So, when his father died (aft. 1768), only Samuel Jr. and some of his sisters along with his brother Jonathan were still in the county. The best I can tell, is that Samuel Jr was living on lot 20, Chaptico Manor. His sister Elizabeth was living on lot 22. The 2 tracts of land in question were part of lot 8. Peter Dent purchased these properties from John Edwards, the son, on 11 Jan 1806. So, is Sarah Higgs be the wife of John Edwards (d. 1784)? Anyone have any thoghts on this?
