Thanks Linda! I didn't know that Susannah Walters who married HGS Cartwright had SMC roots as well. Also >Joseph Harrison, husband of Mary Chappelear, was the son of Nathan Harrison > and his wife, Sarah ____. Note: They had a son named John Chappelear > Harrison who married Penelope Harrison--daughter of Joseph and Victoria! > They also had a daughter named Mary Ann Harrison who married James > Harrison, > son of John Harrison and _____Edwards, of St. Mary's County. I believe the Edwards who married the John Harrison above on 6Jan1843, was Sarah Ann Edwards(7Sept1814-19jan 1892) dau of Elkanah Edwards and Elizabeth Chappelear. >From Elkanah's will written in 1847, probated 1856: my daughter Sarah Ann Harrison wife of John Harrison, one half of all my real estate, I had this John Harrison as the son of Thomas Edwards Harrison and Cecelia Dent. So there maybe 2 John Harrisons, both married to Edwards, that are confusing me. The William Cartwright who was guardian to Julia and HGS Cartwright was not their brother, but the Wm who was married to Elizabeth, as Elizabeth the widow of Wm asks for money from the estate of HGS Cartwright later on, and the William their brother didn't mention a wife in his will, only his siblings. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Nov 1859 New Haven, Nelson, Kentucky) and Ann Clarke contacted me concerning my family tree on Rootsweb. After comparing notes he agreed to take a yDNA test. He has received preliminary results back. He is also haplogroup E1b1b, as are the descendants of my ancestor James Howard (b. abt. 1758 St. Mary's - d. 1802 Washington county, KY). As I've noted before, the Howards of Baltimore, Ann Arundel and Charles county test haplogroup R1b. The tree of this descendant is as follows: William Howard (1771-1859) & Ann Clarke Joseph Edward Howard (1799-1879) & Elizabeth "Betsy" Greenwell William Howard (1833-1863) & Cordelia Frances Coomes George Washington Howard (1860-1937) & Mary F Metcalf John Bernard Howard (1888 - 1930) & Edna Browning Booher The last was his grandfather. My current theory is that William Howard was the brother of James Howard of Hardin Creek, and that they were somehow related to the Edward Howard who died around 1810 in Springfield, and the Thomas Howard, son of Edward, who married Ann Gough. I also think all the St. Mary's Howards are descended from Thomas Howard, born around 1625 in England, who immmigrated to St. Mary's in 1647. Any help in establishing these connections is appreciated. Gayle Howard Londeree [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Good morning, William Cartwright, Henry Greenfield Sothoron Cartwright, and Julia Ann Cartwright were the children of John Cartwright and Margaret Cartwright (her maiden name) who were first cousins. Guardians to the Cartwright children: William Cartwright, their brother who died 1797 in Montgomery County. John Cartwright Ashcom, their half brother (son of their mother, Margaret Cartwright by her first marriage to Charles Ashcom). Nathaniel Ewing, their uncle by marriage as he married Catherine Cartwright, Margaret's sister (Catherine had married first, John Reeder). Catherine (Cartwright) Reeder/Ewing was deceased prior to 1807 when Nathaniel Ewing married second (are you ready for this?) Elizabeth, widow of another William Cartwright. This William Cartwright died in 1799 and I believe he was brother of Margaret Cartwright. 11/8/1799: William Cartwright, SMC, to sell lot of 30 ac. adj. the Cool Springs. (Abstracts of the Newspapers of Georgetown and the Federal City, 1789-1799 by F. Edward Wright). 12/6/1799: Died Sunday last at his res. nr. Benedict, William Cartwright of SMC. (Abstracts of the Newspapers of Georgetown and the Federal City, 1789-1799 by F. Edward Wright). 1/1801: Petition of Elizabeth Cartwright, admin. of Wm. Cartwright stating that a certain William Baker has a claim against the dec'd and wishes it to be referred to the decision of Walter Mackall and Reuben Craig (granted). (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick). Benjamin Suite wouldn't have been picked at random to be guardian of the Cartwright children. There was a relationship somewhere along the line. It's entirely possible that the connection was by the first wife of Benjamin Suite whom we haven't discovered yet. Susanna Walters, the wife of Henry Greenfield Sothoron Cartwright, was also from St. Mary's County. She was the daughter of Lawrence B. Walters who died 1833 in Frederick Co., VA (son of John Walters, d. 1760 in St. Mary's Co.). Now for the Harrison bunch. Joseph Harrison, husband of Victoria Suite, was the son of Robert Harrison and Margaret Burroughs. Joseph Harrison, husband of Mary Chappelear, was the son of Nathan Harrison and his wife, Sarah ____. Note: They had a son named John Chappelear Harrison who married Penelope Harrison--daughter of Joseph and Victoria! They also had a daughter named Mary Ann Harrison who married James Harrison, son of John Harrison and _____Edwards, of St. Mary's County. I don't know Nathan Harrison's parents, but they're sure to have been related to Robert Harrison. My notes on Nathan Harrison: Will of Mary Bright, SMC, 9/12/1781-11/3/1784. Cousin: John Dent Suit, son of Dent Suit, Jr., one feather bed and furniture which stands in the back part of my house; one cow and calf; one sow and pigs; one pewter dish; two plates; and one basin. Cousin: Mary Suit, daughter of Dent Suit, Jr., one feather bed and furniture which stands in my outroom; one large chest; one looking glass; one small trunk; one black walnut table; one iron pot; one dutch oven; and all of the remainder of my pewter. Cousins: Mary Suit and Elizabeth Suit, daughters of Dent Suit, Jr., and Joseph Harrison, son of Nathan Harrison, are to receive the proceeds from the sale of the balance of my estate. Exec.: Friend, Nathan Harrison. Wit.: Peter Carnes, Richard Carnes, John Monarch. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1776-1791 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). 10/10/1785: Admin. accts. of Mary Bright by Nathan Harrison, Exec. Beneficiaries: John Dent Suit, Mary Suit. Bonnie I too have wondered about HG Sothoron, so thanks to Linda for that. The HGS Cartwright was b about 1786 (64 in 1850 Wood Co Va with wife Susan and living with son John) and was the son of John Cartwright who died between Apr 1791 and Apr 1794. He had a brother William who died in Montgomery Co before 6 Mar 1797, and a sister Julia. In one document he is referred to as Henry Greenfield Sothoron Cartwright. Guardian Bonds 1779-1796 SMC P135 wherein William Cartwright, Nathaniel Ewing and John Cartwright Ashcome of SMC are appointed as guardians to him 18th day of April 1794. On the same page these same three men also are bound as guardians to Julia Cartwright, Henry's sister, on the same date. ---------------- His first guardian was William Cartwright who died 1800 and was replaced by John Cartwright Aschome in 1800 and then in 1803 Benjamin Suit was appointed. Elizabeth Cartwright widow of Wm Cartwright who was guardian to Henry G asks for money from estate of Henry GS Cartwright in Aug 1802. There are marriage banns which I think are he and his sister: In Virginia, a Henry G Cartwright marr Susannah Walters 15 Feb, 1804 in Frederick Co.,Va also in the same county a Julia Cartwright marr Lewis Mahany 8 Dec 1812 in Frederick Co, Va. I have never found any family connection between Benjamin Suite or why he would be appointed guardian to HGS Cartwright. Linda or Bonnie-Is the Joseph Harrison mentioned as adm in Benjamin Suites estate the Joseph Harrison, son of Nathan, who married Mary Chappelear? For the Alexander Suit who m. Anges Benfield in Greene Co TN who was proabably the correct Alexnder Suit. who was s/o Benjamin Suit and an earlier wife-- His 2 sureties for his wedding were named Shadrach S. Morris and Gideon Y Morris. I had looked through a bunch of old rootsweb.com archives for a possibly now defunct list called Drury-morris to try to shed some light on these Morris guys but found no definite answer. Then, when looking through the inventory link from the Maryland ARchives for the period when Benjamin Suit died trying find his inventory, I accidentally found the list of debts for Stourton Edwards and it named Joseph True, James Herbert (BOTH connected to James Suit) and this man named ***Gideon MORRIS*** (among many other names). Now I am realy feeling certain the Gideon S. MORRIS who was one of the 2 sureties for Alexander Suit (no. 1)'s wedding in 1784 most probably connects to SMC.
This just hit me!!! One of Jesse Carter's 3 wives was ALSO a BROWN!!! She was Sarah "Sallie" Brown(e), Brown b. ca. 1773 and d/o John Edmonds Brown and an Ann Bedford. Was that [artoci;ar John Edmonds Brown part of the family of Dr. Gustavus Brown and descendants? I have in my FTM that he lived in Halifax co VA. This has to be a huge clue why Benjamin Suit connects to all these people. A long time ago,, a relative sent me information that my grandmther Suite's brother was named William Brown Suit. I know others say he was William Beanss Suit You can't clearly see on ancestry.com and I tried to send for the record so I could tell what it really says--but they said they couldn't find his records. But the cousin who sen this was also a granddaughter of Norris and her family has him as William Brown Suit. Then, my James Suit had a son named William B. Suit who d. 1826. I am really wondering now about the "B". It could be for Banner also. But I wonder why the cousin's line has him as Wm. Brown Suit. ------------------ > Bless you for filling in some of my blanks. > > CLUE: > > Also, I am fairly sure Clarissa Bond Key married Col. John Haynes/Hanes, > b. bef 1800 in Coffee Co AL. No. There were 2 SEPARATE men named Joseph Harrison tht were probably cousins or related closely "somehow" BECAUSE Joseph Harrison, s/o Matthew, who married Victoria Suite had a daughter named Penelope who married John Chappalear Harrison who s/o the "other" man named Joseph Harrison who was s/o Nathan. **** That tells me there was a likely connection. Was Matthew Harrison, father of Jos. Harrison who m. Victoria Suit POSSIBLY the BROTHER of Nathan Harrison who was father of Joseph Harrison who was father of John Chappalear Harrison who married Victoria Suite Harrison & husb. Jos.'s daughter Penelope? **** I also believe this because of the following relationship of William Suit who was brother or son of Benjamin Suit and who was living in Caswell Co. NC in the earliest 1800's: Jesse Carter of Caswell Co NC (formerly of Lnacaster Co VA) was guardian to Robert L. Harrison in the earliest 1800's timeframe--this Robert L. Harrison was s/o a man named John Harrison whose wife was a Jordan and this John Harrison was s/o Nathan-- I think the same guy--but no proof. It makes sense and does connect Benjamin Suit. I am not sure if William was his son or brother. I haven't read the estate link yetfor Benjamin Suit . Will do that now. --- Another connetion: ELKANAH EDWARDS, Sr. was husband of Margaret Harrison who was d/o Nathan Harrison. I have that he also married 2 Chappelear women. Margaret Harrison was sister of the Joseph Harrison who m. Mary Cahppelear and they sere childen of Nathan & wife, SArah MNU. Victoria Suite Harrison & husb. Joseph Harrison named a son Elkanah Mikel Harrison. I am sure that was not by coincidence. ***** Also, I apologize that my emails are coming through 2x. I am not sure why and have ran my anti-virus and anti-malware andd they are still coming through twice. The will of Nathan Chappelear mentions a sister Mary, wife of Joseph Harrison. The father of Nathan, James, died the next year. I don't have a marr date for this Joseph Harrison/ Mary Chappelear or know if he is the Joseph Harrison of the Benjamin Suite estate. Note that James Chappelears daughter Mary Harrison was living in Va at the time of his will so that John Chappelear Harrison who married in Va interests me. Thanks so much for the info on HGSC. I am working on this relationship as there has to be a connection. About your question-- > Linda or Bonnie-Is the Joseph Harrison mentioned as adm in Benjamin Suites > estate the Joseph Harrison, son of Nathan, who married Mary Chappelear? > Mike > Linda can probably answer this better than I can--but there IS a connection somewhere. Benjamin Suite had a daughter named Victoria Suite. She married a man named Joseph Harrison, so Matthew (?) They had a daughter named Penelope Harrison, b. 1801, who married another Harrison (maybe first cousin?) named John Chappalear Harrison, b. abt. 1794. They married 16 May 1837 in Hampshire Co. WV. He was son of another Joseph Harrison who was son of Nathan. Wash't he the one in the will of Mary Bright who was 1/2 sister of Dent Suite and would've been 1/2 aunt to Benjamin Suite. This other Joseph Harrison, s/o Nathan's mother wsa mary Chappalear. This is significant to me because I am researaching Benjamin Suite who I believe was either father or brother of my James Suite due to recent findings. Benjamin Suit was in an estate sale in 1803 in CAswell Co NC where another man who was also named Suit was living. He was William Suit. He is the Wm. Suit who owed $$ to the estate of Jesse Carter of Caswell Co NC but who was originally from the big Carter family in Lancaster Co VA where someone had posted on Genforum that Benjamin Suit had once lived. Also probably the same Wm. Suit who had debt and had to sell his NC land to a man named Dupre who was quite possibly the brother of Aurelia Dupre' who married Charles Hall, Sr. father of Charles Hall, Jr who is connected to Sothoron, Key, Brown, and maybe Suit of SMC. But this same Jesse Caerter was guardian to a young man nammed Robert L. Harrison, grandson of Nathan. (Same Nathan?) His parents were John Harrison and his mother was a Jordan. (We have a bunch of Jordan Suit men we cannot yet place) So Benjamin connects to all these people, but it is still a mess figuring out how. I am starting to really believe he is the SUIT man who married Rebecca Harrison as opposed to James. Margaret Harrison Gober in NC named her children Harrison for middle names. She has named some of them the same names as Victoria Suit Harrison named hers such as Orpha which seems unusual to me. I blieve she was Vicotira;s sister due to the names and Margaret was b. ca. 1774 supposedly in Granville Co NC. Vicotoria was b. ca. 1776. It could be. I have to look at the link to Benjamin's estate that Linda found and see what that says, but as of now--that is where I am:) > Bonnie > I too have wondered about HG Sothoron, so thanks to Linda for that. > The HGS Cartwright was b about 1786 (64 in 1850 Wood Co Va with wife > Susan > and living with son John) and was the son of John Cartwright who died > between Apr 1791 and Apr 1794. > He had a brother William who died in Montgomery Co before 6 Mar 1797, and > a > sister Julia. > > In one document he is referred to as Henry Greenfield Sothoron Cartwright. > Guardian Bonds 1779-1796 SMC P135 wherein William Cartwright, Nathaniel > Ewing and John Cartwright Ashcome of SMC are appointed as guardians to him > 18th day of April 1794. Bless you for filling in some of my blanks. CLUE: Also, I am fairly sure Clarissa Bond Key married Col. John Haynes/Hanes, b. bef 1800 in Coffee Co AL. They m. bef. 1820 in Mobile or Baldwin Co. AL. They had a daughter named Clarissa K. Haynes who married Peter Cornelius Byrne, Sr., b. ca. 1810 Baldwin Co. AL. Their m. date: 24 Feb 1841in Mobile, AL. Peter Cornelius Byrne was brother of the 2 Byrne sisters who married Charles Hall, Jr. who was grandfather of the wife of Robert Morris Key, MD who was s/o Henry Greenfield Sothoron Key!! This is all starting to come together. That is why I wonder "if" Charles Hall, Sr. was not from SMC. But there is more: Joseph Hamilton Hall who was also a son of Charles Hall, Jr. and Mary Byrne & was father of Sarah Josephine Byrne who married Dr. Robert Morris Key, s/o HGSK was married to a woman named Harriet BROWN. This is probably quite significant. She was b. 15 Jan 1811 supposedly in Phila. PA to Wm. P. Brown and Sarah MacCammon of Phila. They m. 2803 in NYC and moved to TUSCALOOSA AL according to family history. I wonder "if" this BROWN family was per chance not the same as the family of Cecelia Brown??? wE KNOW CECELIA was d/o of Gustavus Brown, MD. Robert Morris Key, MD was a doctor as well. His mother-in-law was named Harriet Brown. I do not see a Wm. P. Brown in the Dr. Gustavus Brown family. All I have on this Wm. P. Brown is that he was b. ca. 1771 in PA and lived in Phila. I do not know if he was also a doctor but it EXTREMELY possible. Here is why: Louise Cecelia Hayden Brown(e), Brown is the name of Harriet Brown BYRNE'S SISTER!!!! The family of Charles Hall, Jr. whof Baldwin Co AL--are closely connected to BROWN/BROWNE of Dr. Gustavus and the KEY family of SMC from what I can see. I do not think it was any accident that Benjamin Suit's relative Wm. Suit of Caswell Co NC sold his land to Dupre' (surname of wife of Charles Hall, Sr. of this same family.) Need to work on this connection. Thank you all for the VALUABLE help in determiniting this clue. Thank you Linda. You are a gem!!!! I guess this proves Benjamin Suit was a bit older than I have recently thought-- which means he probably could NOT be a twin of Anne Suit, b. Dec. 1751 who married Charles Neale Jr. That discounts that theory-- but helps place Benjamin's age. Ot a;sp ;eaves tje qusetion open who his mother was. It couldn't be Eleanor or Eunice Dent Kellet if she is the right "Eunice" from the Neale Bible-- but then, why did he name his sons Joseph Dent Suit and Kelita/Kellity? --- About Alex Suit No. 1: The earlier man named Alexander Suit had gone to NC--He was b. bef.1764. He married Agnes Benfield 27 Jan 1784 in what became Greene Co TN but was just a year or so before part of Western NC. His 2 sureties for his wedding were named Shardrach S. Morris and Gideon Y. Morris. They may very well connect to the family of Jacob Morris who lived in MD because of the Lyon connection. Henry Lyon married Anna Morris, d/o Jacob. This may be a clue: A man named Zachariah Lyon was in the SAME militia company in the War of 1812 as the James Suite who d. 1815 who (due to his estaate record--I know his parents now) was son of John Suite and Susannah Locke who are probably from MD and removed to Halifax Co. & Granville Co. NC with the migration/s. Henry Lyon and Anna Morris had a son named Zachariah Lyon and a grandson with that name as well. One of them may be the man in the militia company with that James Suite who d. 1815. (spelled with the "e"). But now we do know that Alex Suit, no. I was most probably the man who was Benjamin's child, not Alex 2 who was born in 1799 & was way too young. I felt he was way too young and I feel better now that you have shed some amazing light on this. Thank you so much. ======================= RE: > Bonnie and List, > > I searched but found no guardianship papers. I did find the inventory for > his estate. There were 2 known men named Alexander Suite connected to Benjamin Suit/Suite who d. in SMC in 1810. One man was b. ca. 1766 and married a woman named Agnes Benfield in the 1780's in Greene Co TN which had previously been part of Western NC. He was either brother of Benjamin and thus, s/o Dent Suite or he was the one who was Benjamin's son. He had gone to NC which became TN. I do not have any further information on him -- or know what became of him after the marriage record. There was a 2nd Alexander Suit who was b. 1799 and also lived in TN. He is written as a son of Benjamin Suit in biographical information about his son, William Riley Suit, II. I question this because if he was not born until 1799 presu8mabley to Benjamin Suit and Mildred (his 3rd?? wife), then why is there no guardian bond or apprenticeship, etc. But that one recod says that Alexander Suit was alegatee who had remved from Maryland before that estate around 1811. He was only maybe 12 years old. Would he not have been a minor in the law at that time? Does anyone know if there were ever any guardianship records for Benjamin's childred such as Kelita, Mildred Ann, and others and maybe this Alexander? It would answer many questions. Hi Linda, Thanks for the correction. I should have caught that before. Thats what I get for trying to think before I had my first cup of coffee. Zachariah Bond must have been married before he married Margaret Neale, whom he married Bet. 06 Mar 1738 and 03 May 1741, because Mary Bond was born on 14 Mar 1736. The source for Sybil Greenfield was Mike Marshall who sources her with "Colonial Families in the United States, Vol. 6". I do not have this book so I can not verify this. I have often wondered if she was really a Jowles and an error was made when the author looked at the will of Henry P. Jowels: "To youngest dau. Sybill and hrs., interest in "Holbidge Town" held jointly with Mr. T. Truman Greenfield, and personalty." Bonnie and List, I searched but found no guardianship papers. I did find the inventory for his estate. See: http://www.msa.md.gov/megafile/msa/coagsere/ce400/ce443/000000/000004/pdf/ce 443-000004.pdf After looking at this again and reviewing the information, I have to believe that Benjamin Suite was married twice and Mildred was the second wife and that he didn't marry her until after 1800. Mildred was born in 1770. She was too young to have been the mother of at least the first four children of Benjamin Suite--maybe more. Mrs. Mildred Suit d. 4/26/1863, aged 92 years, 11 mos., 8 days and Mr. John Suit who died 12/27/1862 at the age of 73, both buried from Trinity Church, Upper Marlboro; buried at an unknown location in Forestville. (Stones and Bones). Here's the family in 1800: 1800 United States Federal Census Name: Benjamin Lint (original reads Suite) County: St Mary's State: Maryland Free White Males 10 to 15: 1 (John Adams Suite, b. abt. 1789, he would have been 11 at that time) Free White Males 16 to 25: 1 (This could be Joseph Dent Suite, b. 1776-1780) Free White Males 45 and Over : 1 (Benjamin Suite) Free White Females 10 to 15 : 1 (Not sure who this would be--I wouldn't think it was Mildred Ann) Free White Females 45 and Over : 1 (This must be the first wife as Mildred was only 30 in 1800) Number of Slaves: 5 Here's Mildred in 1810: 1810: 1M -10 (Kelita, b. 1806); 1M -10 (Benjamin); 1F 26-44 (Mildred); 5 slaves. I would have to think these were Mildred's only children by Benjamin Suite. The others were by the first wife who died between 1800-1805 and probably went to live with their siblings. 6/8/1814: SMC Ct., March Term, 1814. Petition of Jos. Harrison and others, reps. of Benjamin Suit, late of sd. co., dec'd; division of real estate was denied. William Scott and Elizabeth, his wife; Joseph D. Suit; and Alexander Suit, three of the reps. aforesaid, do not reside in Md. (National Intelligencer Abstracts, 1814-1817). 7/27/1814, Daily National Intelligencer: St. Mary's County Court, March Term, 1814. Whereas the Commissioners appointed on the petition of Joseph Harrison and others, representatives of Benjamin Suit, late of said county, deceased, praying that a commission might issue to ascertain whether the real estate of the said Benjamin Suit, deceased would admit of a division without injury to his representatives, having made a report to St. Mary's County court, stating that the real estate would not admit of a division--without loss and injury to all the parties entitled; and whereas it is represented to the said court that William Scott and Elizabeth, his wife, Joseph D. Suit and Alexander Suit, three of the representatives aforesaid, do not reside in the state of Maryland. It is therefore ordered and adjudged that by causing a copy of this order to be inserted in the National Intelligencer once a week for six weeks before the first Monday of August next. Notice to be given to the said Scott and Elizabeth, his wife, Joseph D. Suit and Alexander Suit to be and appear before St. Mary's County court aforesaid, to be held at Leonard Town on the said first Monday of August next, to shew cause, if any they have, why the report aforesaid should not be satisfied. Giving under my hand the 30th day of August, 1814. Jo: Harris, Clk., St. Mary's County Court. June 7. >From these notices, you would have to assume that Alexander Suite was at least 21. Thank You Cheryl. Google earth brought up the island in St. Leonard Creek. It is a small island with no houses, I think. Brooms Island 1, Solomons Island, MD 20685 Google maps brought up the town Broom's Island on Rt 264, it does have its own post office and zip code, 20615, and the feature Broom's island below it. So I guess there are two Broom's Island Maryland. LOL) Brooms Island is on the western shore of the Calvert County peninsula and is located between Island Creek and the Patuxent River. You can Google it and the internet will map it for you. The place still exists here. BTW, there are tons of houses here and the place has a small Genealogy library. The courthouse burnt down, so some records were lost, but I'm sure you could find information on the family there. Bradburn is still a local name in the area. I work with one!
