    2. Yes I know. President James Madison, Father of the Constitution is a distant cousin and also the two Lee's that signed the Declaration of Independence plus Gen. Robert E. Lee are cousins. Funny how you go to school and have history classes to find out later you are kin to these people. :) Mariane Dillow ----- Original Message ----- From: "Saundra Brown" <saundra_b_2001@yahoo.com> To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2012 11:43:52 AM Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Henry II to Eltonhead's Barack Obama Descends From Eltonhead Line 22 Dec 08 marianne dillow mdillow31@verizon.net wrote that Barack Obama also descends from Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton through Martha Eltonhead and Edwin Conway, Sr. through their daughter Eltonhead Conway and Henry Thacker, Sr. He descends from Martha Thacker that married Thomas Hickman. Martha is a sister to my Henry Thacker, Jr who married Elizabeth Payne. / This is written?by Gary Boyd Roberts from NEGHS Articles : "The best royal descent for Edward FitzRandolph is from William the Lion, King of Scotland, who died in 1214, via an illegitimate daughter, Isabel of Scotland, who married Magna Charta Surety Robert de Ros. The male line of the FitzRandolph/FitzRandall/ FitzRanulph/FitzRalph family is one of the very few that can be traced before the Norman conquest of 1066. The best royal descent of Martha Eltonhead Conway is almost certainly from Edward I, King of England (died 1307) through the Bohun, FitzAlan, Goushill, Stanley, Savage, Bold, Gerard, and Eltonhead families of medieval and early modern England." As some of the above connections make clear, Senator Obama has a large number of distant notable cousins. The easiest to trace are the FitzRandolph, Duvall, and Eltonhead descendants." "Eltonhead descendants include Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, signers of the Declaration of Independence, Continental Congress President Cyrus Griffin, Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Douglass White, Jr., novelist John Dos Passos, Secretary of State Edward Riley Stettinus, Jr., and the wives of Revolutionary statesman Gouverneur Morris, Francis Scott Key, Edwin McMasters Stanton (Lincoln's Secretary of War), and Senator Harry Flood Byrd. Kinships to living notables are now being traced. Tantalizing possibilities we wish to confirm further include astronaut John Glenn, actor Brad Pitt, filmmaker John Waters, and musicians Justin Timberlake and Loudon and Rufus Wainwright." 1. Re: [MDSTMARY] Henry II to Eltonhead's
    2. Marianne, Yes confirmed 100% your lineage. I have a few variance in names, but the links valid. Good work. I also work Great Britian, for reason of my direct ancestors the de Tattershalls. From my experience by "connecting the dots" one will find Royals within the lines of scads of SMC families. It's really neat to find out how the SMC lineages intermingle with thier famous British kinsmen. Some of my most satisfying moments working Britian was to discover that 3 martyred Cannonized saints were kin to the Tattershalls of Berks. These being directly related to the William Tattershall, Gent of SMC, his sisters Mary who married Lt. Col John Jarboe, and Sarah Pyle, lady Serum, who married John Pyle, Gent. And yes, if you connect the right dots, one finds lineage of the SMC Tattershalls to the Plantagenets as well. > As of today it appears that the professionals that do medieval genealogy > accept this lineage from Henry II to the Eltonhead's  as being true.  > There were questions before on one generation. 3. Barack Obama Descends From Eltonhead Line 22 Dec 08 marianne dillow mdillow31@verizon.net wrote that Barack Obama also descends from Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton through Martha Eltonhead and Edwin Conway, Sr. through their daughter Eltonhead Conway and Henry Thacker, Sr. Tantalizing possibilities we wish to confirm further include astronaut John Glenn, actor Brad Pitt, filmmaker John Waters, and musicians Justin Timberlake and Loudon and Rufus Wainwright." Samuel Cannon, Master. Burthen 25 tons built at Patowmeck River Anno 1735, the said George Boyd owner thereof. (Governor and Council Proceedings, 1726-1739, p. 371, MSA 3164). 9/1/1735:  Thomas and James Abernathy, late of the County of Ardmagh in Ireland, but now of CC have authorized our trusty friend, George Boyd of SMC, merchant to act as our attorney; to enter into all those 3 lots and houses now in the possession of Ann Abernathy in Charles Town in CC after her death and sell or lease the lots and houses and to recover from Mr. Wm. Middleton, Gent. all debts, contracts, etc. now due to Thomas and James Abernathy.  Wit: Richard Pierey, George Hebb.  (CC Land Rec.). 8/13/1739:  Power of attorney given to Mr. George Boyd of SMC, merchant on 9/1/1735 is revoked by James Eburnathey of the County of Armagh in the Kingdom of Ireland.  (CC Land Rec.). George Boyd, living at Chaptico, SMC reports a runaway Irish servant man named John Barker, aged about 22, a sailor.  (The Maryland Gazette, 6/14/1745). Admin. accts. of George Boyd, SMC, 12/3/1745 and 3/4/1745; next of kin was Philip Boyd; Adm., Margaret Boyd and James Dixon (Skinner). Admin. accts. of George Boyd, SMC 10/6/1746.  Sureties: Capt. Gilbert Ireland, Mr. Richard Ward Key.  Adm. (only transacting): James Dixon. In corresponding with Ethen Cooke in 2004, I told him then that I thought there was a good possibility that Robert Cooke was a brother or other relative of Dr. Richard Cooke.  He was living in the Chaptico area as early as 1735, later moved to Frederick Co., MD, and then moved to Granville Co., NC (with his son, Richard Donaldson Cooke) where he died in 1785. Dr. Richard Cooke, 1695-1765.  Dr. Richard Cooke married Mary Magdalene Donaldson of Chaptico, SMC, dau. of Rev. John Donaldson (d. 1748) and his wife, Elizabeth (d. 1756).  On 8/20/1745, Dr. Cooke leased 103 ac. in Chaptico on the lives of Dr. Richard Cooke, age 50 and Mary Magdalene Stoddert, age 20.  The property was sold to Philip Briscoe.  In His Lordship's Manor of Monococy in Frederick Co., MD in March of 1754, Dr. Richard Cooke leased 183 ac. on the lives of Richard Cooke, 50 (was this 58 since he gave his as as 50 in 1745--LDR); Mary Magdalene, 46 (crossed out); and Richard Donaldson Cooke, age 20.  On 6/13/1754, Dr. Cooke advertised in the Maryland Gazette that he had a stray horse on his plantation in Frederick County.  (Doctors of SMC, Margaret Fresco). Linda Reno -----Original Message----- From: mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdstmary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Cook Sent: Monday, September 17, 2012 7:02 AM To: mdstmary@rootsweb.com Subject: [MDSTMARY] Sarah Fielding, Cooke, Melton. ?? Periodically, I grow curious to learn more about my 7th great grandmother, Sarah Fielding, whom married Robert Cooke. Below, I list all the factual information which I have. I hope that someone will have more, or at least some ideas. ? 1. The earliest mention of Sarah, is when, on March 3rd, 1729, she signs her name, " Sarah Cooke ", at the end of her dead husband Robert Cooke's inventory, in St. Mary's County. ? 2. On August 4, 1731, Sarah, now the wife of Richard Melton, is present at the final settlement of Robert Cooke's accounts. ? 3.? In a letter from February 10, 1827, Robert Fielding Cooke, a grandson of Robert and Sarah, writes the following about Sarah to his nephew, William Henry Cooke: " married a Roman man, Richard Melton, a man of very rough manners = her two sons, John & Alexander, were raised without education... ". ? 4. In 1829, Robert Fielding Cooke wrote another letter, in? which he states that Robert Cooke and Sarah Fielding were merely working in the household of a " Mr. Boyd ". On May 24, 1876, the letter was copied by a great grandson of? Robert Fielding Cooke. At the end of his copy, he added the following: ? ???? "? In the foregoing letter to my uncle, the old gentleman did not tell?as he knew about our parents who came from Europe. Afterwards, my father asked him why he did not. He replied, that since the family had got up in the world, they would not like to know that their progenitors had been in bondage. ? ???? The following? are substantially the facts as related to me by my father. ? ????? Robert Cooke was of a respectful, but very poor Scotch family, and wishing to emigrate to America, he went to Liverpool and contracted with an emigrant ship captain to bring him to America and sell him for a certain time to some planter to work out his ship fare across the Atlantic, and on arriving, a Mr. Boyd bought him. In about one month afterwards, Mr. Boyd also bought Sarah Fielding who became Robert Cooke's wife. In the evening of the day in which he bought Miss. Fielding, he said to Mr. Cooke " Well Bob, I've bought you a wife. " She was from Devonshire England. She was of a wealthy family and highly educated and accomplished. Having a love affair with a gentleman not liked by her parents, they confined her for months in an upper chamber to prevent her meeting him clandestinely. Finally, making her escape, she ran away to Liverpool, embarked on the first ship starting, which happened to be coming to America. They served one year for their fare. Truth is stranger than fiction. Wm. H. Cooke. " ? 5. Finally, an old typed sheet, from the family of? Reverend John Cooke of Hanover Virginia ( a son of James Cooke, and great grandson of Robert and Sarah ), states that Sarah Fielding was a cousin of the writer Henry Fielding, and also a granddaughter of the Earl of Denbigh. ? ????? That is all. Everything else which I've read about Sarah Fielding has been merely speculation. ? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????? 1. [MDSTMARY] Is Thomas Connery a Conway, William Eltonhead
    2. I have posted many times that Edwin Conway, Sr and Martha Eltonhead are my 9th great grandarents. I have posted before on a Thomas Connery wondering if he was a Conway or not. There is a Thomas Connery that died 1654 in the Maryland Court that ordered the Estate of Thomas Connery to pay William Eltonhead 304 pounds of tobacco and casks'due by Specialty produced in Court. In 1656 the court records show that Richard Collett produced a letter of Administration on the Estate of Thomas Connery and Mrs. Eltonhead in whose hands the said Estate is, Shall deliver the Estate of the said Connery upon Oath to the Said Collett Administrate of the said Connery. Thomas Connery had a warrent dated Dec 1650 for land "between Tu Halfhead and Francis Lavender or elsewhere." He had 200 acres called Connery's Neck. On the 1705 rent rolls of St. Mary's county the 200 acre tract land lay in Resurrection Hundred on the border of St. Mary's Hundred. On 17 Jan 1652/3 Thomas Connery appointed Friendship Tounge as his attorney to recover a debt. Cuthbert Fenwick was a witness to the transaction and he married my Martha Eltonhead's sister Jane Eltonhead. A Edward Connery/Conway? of St. Clement's Manor in St. Mary's County was a servant of Richard Foster. Foster was originally from Lower Norfolk, Va in 1652. Foster became constable in Oct 1661 in St. Mary's County.. There was a John Foster that gave a deposition on behalf of my Edwin Conway in Northampton Co., Va. And a Thomas Conway was in a dispute with a Achilles Foster and in 1786 George Foster married Sarah Conway , both events in Fauquier Co., Va. Could this Thomas Connery be kin to my Edwin Conway, Sr . ? Sources: Archives of Maryland Vol 10, Judicial and Testamentary Business of the Provincial Court.. 1649-1657. p 334 and 449.
