Shrewsbury South Sassafras Parish, Kent Co.: William Thompson son of Dr. Samuel & Elizabeth Thompson b. 11/30/1754 Shrewsbury Parish 16 Apr 1770 Samuel Thompson elected vestryman. Does anyone have any information on William Thompson s/o Dr. Samuel & Elizabeth Thompson? I am trying to find the parents of Capt. James H. Thompson of Kent Co., MD. James H. Thompson b. 19 Dec 1813, Piney Neck, Kent Co., MD. d. 21 Mar 1908 Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. married 23 Nov 1840, Kent Co., MD to Martha A. Ashley (1814-1892). According to the death cert. for James H. Thompson his father was William Thompson. I do find a William Thompson listed in the 1783 Tax Assessment Index for Kent Co. I also find William Thompson in the 1790 Kent County census showing 1 male age 16+ and 2 males under 16 and 2 females. Today I found an account book of James Hyland, Jr. Blacksmith of Kent county, which showed a receipt paid by William Thompson 11 Feb 1817. Another entry in this account book is for Temperance Thompson for 1826 thru Aug 29, 1828, referencing her son, James and also a ref: July 1827 to cash pd you by William in Baltimore $3.26. Another entry about James passage to Baltimore. Capt. James H. Thompson operated a Packet and then Steamboat line from Chestertown to Baltimore. At the time of his death he was survived by 4 sons: one son being Capt. Joseph W. Thompson, a prominent businessman of Philadelphia. When James Hyland, Jr. died in 1824 he left a wife and children. His wife, Rhoda remarried in 1833 to a James Collins. Rhoda Hyland Collins died in 1838 and a Chancery Record found in 1839 shows the court appointing James H. Thompson as guardian to the (2) minor daughters, Kesiah Hyland and Ann Marie Hyland. I have a letter written in 1901 stating that Capt. James H. Thompson was the grandson of the late James Hyland, Sr. of Kent County. Putting all this information together tells me it is possible that James Hyland, Sr. had a daughter, Temperance Hyland who married William Thompson and James H. Thompson was their son. This is only a guess, but it makes sense. Any help is appreciated. Thank you Sharon
