    3. Hi, I received this from another e-mail list & thought it might help someone trying to read an "old stone." Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) I have been ask to list my method of reading old cemetery stones. I use corn starch in an old thin men's sock. I fill the sock, then tap it along the face of the stone. It works great & does not damage the stone, the first rain washes it away. I keep it in a plastic bag & in a small box. But remember the George Washington Masonic Memorial has an extensive library and it is open to the public. Call first to ensure that someone will be there. There is also a very, very large library at the Scottish Rite House of the Temple in Washington, DC. They have the library staffed daily, but I believe that they prefer reservations for researchers. They sent me a letter, courtesy copying the local representative in PA., and stated my gg grandfather's records would be stored in the state/locale where he was a member. The man's name is Brad Buchanan and he did write and let me know that he would look for the records when he could. That was 2 years ago.     3. David, I have a little information about John W. Hayden of Co.K . He was my great-granduncle. John Wesley Hayden was the eldest son of Charles E. Hayden of Delaware and Mary Rebecca Bossee of Kent Co. Maryland. John was born in 1844. He was 18 years old and resided in Queen Anne Co. Maryland when he mustered in on Aug. 21, 1862. His occupation was listed as farmer. He was present at all roll calls except for Feb 5,1865 when he was attended for an incised wound and in Mar. 1 to 9, 1865 when he was diagnosed with a fractured wound. He returned to duty after both incidents. During the civil war, his father, Charles E. Hayden, also in the union army, served with Co. F, 1 Reg't Potomic Home Brigade, Maryland Cavalry, also known as "Cole's Brigade." After the civil war, John married Elizabeth M. Stinson, on March 12, 1872, in Smyrna, Delaware. They had at least three children, Charles E., Herman, and John H. Hayden. John W. also lived in Wilmington, De. where he worked as a carpenter. He was in Wilmington when he died of pneumonia on March 26, 1912 and was buried in Riverview cemetery. All the civil war information listed above was obtained from his pension record xc2685-639.
