    3. Georgetown was the port on the Maryland side of the Potomac and rivaled Alexandria which is on the Virginia side for many years. It became a part of DC when DC was formed. It does not extend all the way up to the Maryland line to the north but is loosely bounded by the Cathedral/Tenleytown neighborhoods of DC to the north, Foggy Bottom/State Dept/Geo Wash Univ to the east, and the American University/Canal Road area to the west. Kinda like defining SoHo! After the Civil War the area was notoriously run down. However in the 20th century it became (and remains) one of the poshest places to live in DC. For example, JFK and Jackie had their townhome in Georgetown as do many old name politicos. There are wondeful shops, restaurants, and the architecture is 18-19th century (still including cobblestone streets which are a bear to drive on!).
