I connect to the Greenfield line thru Ann Greenfield, dau of Thomas Greenfield and Martha Truman, via her marriage to Jhn Wight. Their daughter, Ann Wight, married my grgrgrgrUncle, David Burnes. Ann Greenfield died in Nottingham, Prince George's Co., 1742. There seems to be very close ties between my Burnes family and the Greenfield's and Trumans as many generations of the Burnes family have named their sons Truman. Also, Burnes family legend states that when they came to the US, they used the name Greenfield--this is unproven, but several of us researchers have heard of this, I'd sure like to know more! Also, Ann Wight and her husband, David Burnes, lived on the land that encompasses the southern grounds of the White House, the Treasury, the Mall, the Jefferson Memorial, the Old Navy Shipyard and more! They lived in a house built by David's grandfather, David Burnes I, around 1748--it was located on what is now 17th St. and Constitution Ave and was standing until 1894 when it was demolished to make way for the Columbia Athletic Club, and is now occupied by the Pan American Building. I have lots of info on this and I would appreciate and info on the Greenfield/Burnes connection. Barb Price 6th Great Grandaughter of David Burnes I
I haven't heard anything for awhile. Does anyone have any info on TASKERS or SIMMONS they could share with me? I will exchange info. Especially on a Rebecca Catherine SIMMONS born in Randolph CO in 8/1879!! Shirley
Bill, Thanks for the Lowe line , you filled in a lot for me, I am adding the following info and corrections: Gen I : Rebecca Giles married first -------Wright, second John Lowe and third Thomas Mudd. Isaac GILES of Virginia, Bachelor, made his sister Rebecca wife of John Lowe and next of kin the administrator of his estate. ENGLISH ESTATES OF AMERICAN COLONISTS by Peter Coldham Genealogical Publishing Co Balt MD. Major John Lowe's Will was filed in St Marys Cty. Gen 3: Not positive that Mary Ann Hawkins was the daughter of Elizabeth (Holland) Wyne, she could have been from his first wife Elianor-------. Elizabeth Hawkins does not name Mary Ann as a beneficiary in her will. Elizabeth Lowe and Thomas Dawson's first son was BENONI and their son ROBERT DOYNE married first Sarah Newton Chiswell and had 11 children before he married Hennrietta Lowe and had 3 more. George Dawson who married Eleanor Lowe was born in PG Cty MD in order to be close to his mother. Brooke County VA is now in WVA. He died in Fayette, Cty PA -I will be interested in seeing your sources too. I am descended from both Benoni and Rebecca children of Thomas and Elizabeth Dawson and have much on the entire line. All these Nottingham posts are wonderful! Do any of you who have folks owning tracts there, find references to the HARBIN or HARVIN name? I have a Thomas & an Elisha HARVIN on the 1820 census in Nottingham. Both hd families. Then I have a 54-year-old woman named HARBIN living with the ?LITTLEFORD family in Nottingham in 1850. Don't know who any of them are and would love to get any information about them. Joan Marie in Oregon
I'm new to this list. I've been told that the lineage for Priscilla, daughter of Thomas and Priscilla Francis, shows up in a family history printed in the Pr. George's Genealogical Society Bulletin, Vol. 21 #1, Sept. 1985, lineage of Lillian M. Grove. Does anyone have a copy of this issue or should I contact the Genealogical Society with a request? Can they be contacted by email? Thanks for any help. Ruth in Delaware
Steve My husband (who grew up in Croom, PG, Maryland) says that the area known as Nottingham is about 3 miles south of Croom. He said there was a story on TV this weekend about a church hall that burned Friday night on Brooks Church Road, in Nottingham. I, of course, was doing our taxes and didn't see the story. He states that Brooks Church Road intersects Croom Rd (Rt. 382) just across from Tanyard Road. Croom is SE of Upper Marlboro on Croom Road (take 301 south and make a left onto Croom Rd). John also said that Nottingham is near Naylor on Croom Road. Hope this is of some help. Barbara
Have included a "draft lineage" of Major John and Rebecca (Wright/Wight) Lowe adding children and grandchildren that I have pieced together with information from ggggreat grandchildren and Prince Georges County, MD. records... These include the Mudds, Dawsons, Stonestreets, Tolsons, Lindsays, Riddles, Pickerills, Bayne, Magruders, Wades, and other PG.,MD families... Would like some help with this lineage if you have allied lines that married these LOWES.... Can provide a GEDCOM of this draft LOWE lineage if you are interested beyond the 4 generations provided here........ My best guess from looking at the Microsoft Streets computer map is that most of Marsham's Rest is in the Patuxent River Park, and the point of the park is His Lordship's Favor. I see Nottingham Road on this map. According to "Prince George's County, a pictorial history," by Alan Virta, p 39, Charles Town at Mount Calvert was established by law in the 1680's and was the only town in PG when it was organized in 1696. In 1706 and 1707 the General Assembly directed the establishment of six more towns in PG: Upper Marlboro, Nottingham, Queen Anne, Mill Town, Piscataway and Aire (or Broad Creek). The first four were on the Patuxent, the last two on the Potomac side. Only Mill Town failed to develop. On page 94 of this book is a map of the March of the British Army from Benedict to Bladensburg, which took them through Nottingham in 1814. The Battle of Bladensburg was a great embarrassment. On August 24, 1814, the British met an untrained and ill-prepared defensive force of about 6000 Maryland and DC militia. After a brief engagement they scattered except 500 regulars under Commodore Joshua Barney. The regulars fought valiantly but with no support and were forced to retreat. The flight left Washington unguarded and the British marched into the city and burned it.
Just a little southeast of the Marsham's Rest tract is the tract of Gedling. The original Gedling is near Sherwood Forest and Nottingham in England. The Greenfield family hailed from there and remembered the poor of Gedling in a will. There is also a Gedling website. The Gedling tract was patented by Thomas Greenfield in 1679 when the land was in Calvert Co. The Greenfield family were prosperous weavers of Gedling, England. I wonder how many other settlers of the area came from Robin Hood country? Alice
Hey, we're neighbors, or rather our ancestors were. The tract Marshams Rest was bounded on the north by Exchange, on the east by His Lordship's Favor (which fitted into a bend on the Patuxent R.) and by the Patuxent R.; on the south by Taylorton and Quick Sale; on the west by Newton and a name I can't quite make out, ending con. My ancestors at one time owned Quick Sale and also Archer's Pasture which is diagonally se of Marshams Rest. Marshams Rest was patented Jan 18, 1663, by Richard Marsham. It was then in Calvert Co. I've visited that area and the name Nottingham kind of struck a bell which is why I looked it up. Alice Davis Cates, Vista, CA
A little bit more -- My ADC PG County map (Map 34, pg. 39) shows Nottingham just north of the Patuxent River NRMA and south of the Merkle Wildlife Management Area. Nottingham is right on the river -- Tanyard and Nottingham Roads (both of which cross Croom Road) end and merge at Nottingham. Hello, Nottingham was most definitely a town in PG County. A number of families made their home there -- several branches of my ancestors the Warings settled there. There is an historical marker about Nottingham at the intersection of (this is approximate!!) Croom Road (Rt. 382) and Bald Eagle School Road. As an example of activity there, here is an excerpt from Mrs. Bowies book "Across the Years in Prince Georges County", from the Waring chapter: Col. John Henry Waring, youngest son of John Waring, Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth Margaret Bowie, was born in Nottingham, Prince Georges County, March 19, 1809 Upon reaching his majority, he received the plantation devised to him by his grandfather Waring [Richard Marsham Waring, Sr.], consisting of thirteen hundred acres lying on the Patuxent River south of Nottingham and known as Marshams Rest, but which name he changed to Bald Eagle Mr. Waring was for many years a vestryman of St. Pauls Episcopal Church and was generally known as Colonel Waring. He was a Southern sympathizer and incurred the hostility of the Federal Government during the War Between the States." Hope this helps!! Looking for information and pictures of a town in Prince George's County, Md. named Nottingham. It had 1500 souls during the Revolution but burned in 1900 and no longer exists. Any leads are welcome. Hi, I am trying to locate information and photos for the family of James McFarlane and Agnes Glover. It is thought that James never went to Maryland, USA nor to Dalry, Ayr, Scotland from County Down Ireland but his wife and their unmarried children Susan ( later Mrs Thomas S Holmes), Thomas and William Glover McFarlane did so about late 1871 or early 1872. An older brother Robert McFarlane and his wife Agnes Longridge and young son also Robert and possibly a baby daughter Susanna may have gone to the USA the year before his mother and siblings as there is no record of them in the the 1871 census in Dalry, Scotland. He went to Barton, Maryland for the first nine years and then to Nebraska for a year nut returned to Maryland to live in Miller Road, Midland until he passed away in 1906. I am particularly looking for information on the Holmes family descendants from Lonaconing and for those of William Glover McFarlane who married Ida Jane Paterson. I am unsure of where they lived but belive that this was also Lonaconing MD. Any help would be gratefully received. Reply to Regina M McLachlan Rothwell, Australia. regina@ecn.net.au
