    1. Re: RAY in Maryland
    2. Dear Hugh, Sue and others: I am interested in communicating with anyone regarding the ancestry and descendants of Edward Lanham b. abt 1764 in Prince George's Co., MD that married abt 1786 in the same county to Mildared Harris. Mildared was the daughter of my ancestor Benjamin Harris and Sarah Ann (maiden name unknown but believed to be Douglas). Thank you. Chuck Harris Hugh, In response to your email to the list,  I have a Thomas RAY married Anna Marie ABBEY.   They had Elizabeth Ann RAY and she married James Samuel STEWART who died in 1869. They are tied into the LANHAM and BALDWIN lines too. I have never researched this part of my family from Anne Arundel County. Sue

    1. More about Georgetown
    2. Looking at my ADC (detailed) map of Cecil County there is a Georgetown spot with a post office on the north side of the Sassafras River just east of Fredericktown and there is also a Georgetown across the river in Kent Co. Big town (not)---straddles the river. As I mentioned, in the early days of the county the Cecil line extended well down into what is now Kent Co. but the line was moved up to the river in the early 1700's for the convenience of residents. In some records you will find lists of unclaimed mail in the early 1800's at the Georgetown Crossroads post office---this was the Georgetown near the Sassafras.

    2. Cynthia Shockley
    3. Georgetown was the port on the Maryland side of the Potomac and rivaled Alexandria which is on the Virginia side for many years. It became a part of DC when DC was formed. It does not extend all the way up to the Maryland line to the north but is loosely bounded by the Cathedral/Tenleytown neighborhoods of DC to the north, Foggy Bottom/State Dept/Geo Wash Univ to the east, and the American University/Canal Road area to the west. Kinda like defining SoHo! After the Civil War the area was notoriously run down. However in the 20th century it became (and remains) one of the poshest places to live in DC. For example, JFK and Jackie had their townhome in Georgetown as do many old name politicos. There are wondeful shops, restaurants, and the architecture is 18-19th century (still including cobblestone streets which are a bear to drive on!). It is still called Georgetown. These are not the only Georgetowns in Maryland. 2. Ellis Island Database Introduced By HANNAH WOLFSON .c The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Tracking ancestors who entered the country through Ellis Island used to mean poring through endless reels of microfilm. Now, it can be as simple as a few clicks of a computer mouse. On Tuesday, Ellis Island officials and the Mormon Church introduced a database containing arrival records for the 22 million immigrants who entered the port of New York from 1892 to 1924. The database is expected to be up and running on Wednesday. When fully operational in about a month, the database, which includes 70 percent of all U.S. arrivals recorded during that period, will be available both to Ellis Island visitors and on the Internet (http://www.ellisislandrecords.org). ``This is the tool everybody's waiting for to go back to Ellis Island and find their ancestors,'' said Wayne Metcalfe, who helped direct the project for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At Ellis Island on Tuesday, 103-year-old Marinus deNooyer of Wayne, N.J., and his family members visited and checked out their family history. DeNooyer emigrated from the Netherlands at 7. The searchable database includes immigrants' names, their port of origin, age, nationality, hometown and marital status. Visitors to the new American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island can take home printouts of the information, and purchase a copy of the original immigration records and a photo of the ship that brought their ancestors to the United States. Online visitors will be able to order the records and photos in about a month. Until now, Ellis Island information was only available on microfilm at the National Archives in Washington, or at the Mormon Church's Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The church encourages members to try to identify ancestors, so they can be baptized into the faith after death. Over the past several years, church volunteers have worked with the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation to compile the information from manifests immigrants filled out on board ship. Stephen Briganti, president and chief executive of the foundation, said he used the new database to track down his grandmother. ``There's great interest now in finding one's family history, where they came from, what their life was like, what diseases they might have had,'' Briganti said. ``This is certainly going to help that process along because this really is the story of America.''
