    3. I hope someone can help me. In some applications for DAR membership I recently found, my ancestor Clement Hill BROOKE and his wife Ann (Nancy) CARROLL supposedly were born in Surrattsville, Maryland. Nancy was born in 1794, but I do not have the year of Clement Hill Brooke's birth. However, searching the internet, I've discovered that the town of Surrattsville was not officially organized until during the Civil War years. Does anyone know what the previous name of this town was? Also, according to the same papers, both Clement Hill Brooke and his wife Ann Carroll Brooke were buried at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Cemetery, Silver Hill, Maryland. Again on the internet, I have been unable to locate a Silver Hill. It states this cemetery is in Oxon Hill. Is this correct? Does anyone know if St. Ignatius still exists, and if their records would be available to the public? Thanks. Ann Chandler in Oregon

    3. Raelene, Using the online SSDI, I found nothing on a Jean Bennett in MD, so if she stayed put, she may still be alive. I tried to find her in an online search in Hyattsville, but no James, Jean or Frances Bennett were amoung the 40 Bennetts listed. SSDI listing for the only James Bennett with a Hyattsville connection: JAMES BENNETT 27 Dec 1922 Feb 1984 20784 (Hyattsville, Prince Georges, MD) Last Residence & Last Benefit SSN: 239-28-9144 Applied in North Carolina His obit should be in the Washington Post. If you go to http://yp.yahoo.com and set the location to Hyattsville, MD you can search through the listing for churches. A well established (since 1860) Funeral Home in Hyattsville is: Gasch's Funeral Home 4739 Baltimore Ave Hyattsville, MD (301) 927-6100 The Maryland Archives has a great website: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us Good luck in your search! -- Carol Askey Maryland USGenWeb Coordinator Allegany & Prince George's County MDGenWeb Coordinator

    1. MDPGEORG-L - Amusing Sidebar on Name Spellings
    2. Here is something amusing that was forwarded to me today. Ok, I know that this is not related to any of our family searches, but I think that, in a bizarre kind of way, it ties in with all the trouble we sometimes have trying to track down that elusive ancestor who spelled their name "27" different ways, depending on how they felt at the time. Enjoy, -Geo George F. Locke Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. geolocke@earthlink.net ****************************** Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 16:25:02 -0400 From: eweise <eweise@usatoday.com> Subject: Slack goes when California DMV gains access to SSA database Apparently the California DMV gained access to the computerized database of the Social Security Administration at the beginning of the year. Sometime in February or March the DMV began bouncing back all requests to renew drivers licenses in which the name given did not exactly match the name in the SSA computers. I learned of this the day my license expired when I attempted to renew it and was told that because my Social Security number was issued under the name Beth back in the 1960s, according to the DMV I was attempting to defraud the government "and possibly engaged in identity theft" by attempting to get a drivers license under the name Elizabeth Weise--despite the fact that the State of California has accorded me a drivers license under that name for eight years now. A call to the Social Security Administration confirmed that since the DMV was given the ability to hook directly into the SSA's computers, they've been flooded with Robert-Bob's, Richard-Dicks's and Alex-Alexander's who are all being told they can't renew their licenses until they officially change their names. For the record, the clerk at the SSA told me "We understand that Beth and Elizabeth are the same person and it doesn't bother us, but the DMV won't let it by any more." To fix this one must personally go to an SSA office and have them change their official record. The identification they require? A California drivers license. 3. I have been trying to trace my WHITTINGTON family through Anne Arundel County without a whole lot of luck. I'm looking for George Franklin WHITTINGTON, Sr. married to Elizabeth TURNER. They had one son that I know about, George Franklin WHITTINGTON, Jr b 1843 who in 1869 married Sarah Jane CHANEY b 1851 . She was the daughter of John CHANEY and Belinda CARR who married in Prince Georges County in 1840. I know there are WHITTINGTON from Calvert County and quite possibly the family I'm researching originated there also. Can anyone connect to any of this? I'm stumped..... 1. LOWE LUSBY SUTTON RIDDLE researchers
    2. Bailey
    3. I found an Eleanor Lusby who married John Wesley Lowe on 10/8/1807 in Prince Georges County, MD..... John Wesley and Eleanor (Lusby) Lowe moved to Pike County, Ohio and they died in Chillicothe, Missouri... Their children born 1808-1826 are: John Sutton Lowe, John Wesley Lowe, Jr., Mary Ann Sutton Lowe, Eliza Lee Lowe, Thomas Lowe, William Lowe (d. Highland County, Ohio), Keturah Mariah Lowe, Samuel Lowe, James Lowe, Alfred Lowe, and a Edward Lowe... Note that John Wesley Lowe born 2/27/1778 in Prince Georges County, MD. and was a possibly a son of Nicholas b 1748 or John Lowe b. 1752 and a possibly a grandson of John and Mary (Sutton) Lowe. (alias John Lowe III). Eleanor Lusby is a daughter of John and Martha (Wilson) Lusby of Prince Georges County, MD... We found a 12/20/1802 inventory of a John Lowe in Prince Georges County, MD. that was finalized on 06/15/1803. In it are mentioned a John W. Lowe, Henry H. Lowe, Margaret Lowe, and a Samuel Lowe is the administrator of the inventory.... Note that Margaret Lowe was a granddaughter of John and Mary (Sutton) Lowe III and that Henry H. and Samuel are "probable" children of Henry and Ann (Lindsay) Lowe who was a nephew to John Lowe Jr.... These folks are also kin to the Riddles of Prince George County, MD. Can anyone help us with these folks..... Bill Bailey, Antioch, Ca., 94509 Thanks Bill Bailey, Antioch, Ca., 94509

    1. 1776 CENSUS OF Prince Georges County, MD.
    2. Bailey
    3. I have been browsing thru the two volumes by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh that contain the "Colonial, Revolutionary, County and Church Records of Maryland" to find ancestors in the 1776 Census of Prince Georges County, MD..... The first 89 pages of volume I contain the St. Johns and Prince Georges Parishes....and I believe contains 1795 residents names...but there were 18000 souls in the county about this time... However, Brumbaugh makes a statement in the preface page vi (volume I) that not all the census for MD. was published.... I have found several omissions in Prince Georges County, MD. for example...Basil Waring, III, and Nathan Lowe who are not included in this census. My question for some of you folks that are more familiar with PG. Co., MD. Are there more pages in the MD. Archives for Prince Georges County, MD. that weren't published in Brumbaugh's book ? If not, were these pages published by someone else and/or uploaded online ? Thanks Bill Bailey, Antioch, Ca., 94509

    1. Virus warning from the list owner!!!!
    2. Carol Askey
    3. Folks, The worm virus W32.Badtrans.13312@mm was just discovered April 11th of this year. If you have not updated your anti-virus definitions since then, you need to do so. What this bad boy does is reply to all unread emails in your email message folders, and passes on the infecting virus in attachments called any of the following: Pics.ZIP.scr images.pif README.TXT.pif New_Napster_Site.DOC.scr news_doc.scr hamster.ZIP.scr YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif searchURL.scr SETUP.pif Card.pif Me_nude.AVI.pif Sorry_about_yesterday.DOC.pif s3msong.MP3.pif docs.scr Humor.TXT.pif fun.pif If you have tried to open any of these attachments, you are infected and must "disinfect" your system. If you are not comfortable handling this yourself, contact your computer support person right away. Since the worm only responds to unread mail, after waiting 5 minutes, until you are "cured," quickly open or mark all your currently unread mail as having been read. If you have no unread mail, the worm cannot send out any messages. (Note: This is not a fix. It is only a work around to protect all the folks who contact you by email.) If you receive an email with this attachment, DO NOT OPEN IT. However, please advise the sender that they are infected. Instructions about what to do can be found at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.13312@mm.html Remember: The key is UNREAD messages. It can appear that you are receiving the message from the list, if the worm is replying to an unread list message. Since no attachements can be posted to the list, thankfully everyone on the list will not receive the worm carrying emails. However, list members are vulnerable, if another list member, who is infected, leaves leaves unread list messages in their message folders. Consequently, I believe it is important to warn you about this worm virus. As always, I request that we not discuss the situation on the list. If you have any questions, please contact me directly. Be sure to notify anyone from whom you have received the attachments named above. That is the only way they can know they are infected. -- Carol Askey Maryland USGenWeb Coordinator Allegany & Prince George's County MDGenWeb Coordinator Maryland Sites USGenWeb Site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdgenweb/ Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/mdfiles.htm Allegany County Sites USGenWeb Site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/ Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/allegany/ PG County Sites USGenWeb Site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdpgeorg/ Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/md/pgeorge/

    1. NICHOLAS DAVIS d. 1717 Prince George's
    2. Hello, I'm new to this list and searching for information about a DAVID DAVIS and wife DOROTHEA who had NICHOLAS NAILOR DAVIS in Frederick, MD 1778. I believe he descends from a DAVID DAVIS who married ANN NAYLOR and that these families trace their ancestry to a NICHOLAS DAVIS who died in Prince George's in 1717 leaving at least two children, NICHOLAS, JR. and JOHN. Names connected to this family are COLLINGS, LOVEJOY, PADGETT, LYON. I would be grateful for any information on this family. It appears they could have a connection with MEREDITH DAVIS as well. Thanks in advance. Linda
