    3. Hi y'all! I was sent some information from two sources and I wanted to know if anyone can verify them for me. 1. The first is called: GenealogyLibrary.com: Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families Vol 1, Pg. 204 reportedly says "John and Sarah Fairall from Devonshire England who came to MD to Prince George County". 2. The second is called: Registered Maryland Heraldic Families 1634-1935 by Alice Norris Parran, President of Society of Colonial Dames, Baltimore Maryland which reportedly says, "The Fairalls are hard to trace past Maryland, where one John Fairall arrived in Prince Georges County about 1774, with plenty of money and bought a tobacco plantation. His wife's name was Sarah. He was past military age then." I would appreciate anyones input!

    3. That a William Miles, Jr. was next of kin for Margaret Miles (c1715-?) of PG Co. MD is all of know of this Miles family. I wish that I knew more. The MD Probate records and Prerogative court records are on a Broderbund CD 206 which can be ordered from the FTM site. It's well worth the money!! Susan -- -- Susan C. 3. Just found a paper in some of my mother's stuff. It has a title of John D. Bowling---Ancestor---Grandfather. I have no idea who he is but I do see in my PG County books some of his ancestors who are listed....like Contee, Hall, Turner, Keetch, Sullivan, Plummer, Mercer, Forbes, Claggett. There is no date on this paper but for instance, it lists "Mattie Bowling married, Henry W. Clagett. She is dead. He is living." I noted in my PG County, MD Marriages and Deaths in 19th Century Newspaper that Mattie Bowling Clagett died on 7/1e/1867 at the age of 24, daughter of Col John D. Bowling. If anyone has ever heard of any of these folks, I would appreciate hearing from them. I'm uncertain why they would be in box of stuff as I don't know them but would be curious to know any connection to my Mattingly family in PG County. Thanks, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York

    3. Susan- You know how desperate we get that we pursue the most elusive scraps of information..... I have long had the feeling 'Miles' was a name of significance in my Deakins family. Does any of this fit anything you have on the Miles family? John Deakins was born in PG Co. in 1737 (father John Deakins, mother Priscilla (Erickson?) John Jr. married Lettice/Letiticia (Anderson?) by 1770 and they lived in Fairfax Co. VA in the 1770s, then to Allegany Co. MD by the mid-1790s where they died 1810-15. John and Lettice had a grandson named Miles Deakins b. 1830s, and a gr-grandson (from a daughter) named Miles Deakins Kay b. 1830s. I have not found anything on either Priscilla's or Lettice's origins or verification of their maiden names (which come from uncertain family stories.) -----Original Message----- From: Susan Johanson <djohanson@mindspring.com> To: MDPGEORG-L@rootsweb.com <MDPGEORG-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, June 01, 2001 9:55 AM Subject: William Miles PG Co. 3. I for one would not want DNA typing for genealogical use to be rejected out of hand. I would like for people to consider in a knowledgeable way what the potential consequences of submitting their and their families DNA are. I'm sure it is supposed to be kept private and secure. However private and secure only last until one or more of the following happen: 1- Some trusted person with access and insufficient integrity has a serious money or morals problem 2- Someone makes a plausible case to a judge and gets a court order 3- One or more persons successfully hack into the computer system where the data is kept 4- The company or organization fails and their physical property and data assets are purchased 5- The company or organization merges with another (whose purpose may be to gain access to the data) I'll quit after 5, but there are others, probably more than I can think of. When we make decisions that affect others, we should try to make them as responsibly as we can. Ignorance rarely results in responsible action. Thank you for your time. 1. Familiar Names for tracts of land
    2. Carol Askey
    3. Folks, If you have the chance to review the names of the tracts of land surveyed or granted prior to the formation of PGC, you may come across some familiar names. I found two that jumped off the map at me. "Turkey Thickett" and "Land Over" In my youth, I played softball at a park called Turkey Thicket, so I wondered if there was a connection. The park today still carries the name bestowed upon it back in 1686 by Charles Bealle. Landover & Landover Hills of today are in the general area of the tract of land named "Land Over" by James Rumsey in 1683. Have any of you recognized any other tracts whose names have survived to today?? 3. I think it would be inappropriate for me try to educate anyone on the use or misuse of DNA data. The following link is to a site that provides a look at several aspects of DNA use. Both positive and negative aspects are discussed. The information appears to be designed for a "lay person" audience, so most people should be able to understand the concepts discussed. Anyone could "begin" their education here. http://www.geneart.org/genome-toc.htm Thank you for your time. 2. Gene Sears
    3. I hope all of the folks contributing their and their families DNA for genealogical use are fully aware of the other uses/abuses that can be made of a DNA sample/record. I know that there are many trusting and trustworthy people out there. However there are many who are not, worse yet there are few laws protecting individual or group privacy, and the ones there are, often aren't taken seriously. If you think this is not a serious issue, you are extremely under informed. I urge you to research the privacy issues, uses, and abuses (both actual and potential) relating to DNA. Research can begin at any Internet search engine or at your local library. This will not be as much fun as genealogical research, and it will take more than 30 minutes, BUT the issues and DANGERS as well as the potential positives are truly awe inspiring. Thank you for your time. Gene Sears Searching for Sears, Phipps, Watkins, & Mangum folks (in Maryland and Virginia), Hayes, Laster, Darnell, & Tucker folks (in North Carolina and Virginia)
