    1. The Black Books - 1733
    2. William Smith
    3. I would appreciate some assistance in interpreting an entry recorded in the Calendar of Maryland State Papers - The Black Books, p. 39, margin reference 267, II, 115: 1733, Prince George's County. List of taxables in the lower precinct of Mattapany Hundred, taken by Bryan REILY, constable. Personal names in list: * John Brightwell, Edward Boswell, Peter Brightwell, Richard Brightwell, Jasper Kennick, * I have listed just the one line of names, of the 14 lines presented. First, is there any significance in the order? Is it reasonable to assume that persons listed near to one another likely lived near to each other? Can anyone provide information for 1733 as to when (what month?) in the year the list might have been made? The issue here is that Jasper Kennick died early in 1733 - we know from the Prince George's County Orphan Court entry for June 1733 where "William Kennick, age 15 next April chooses John Brightwell as his guardian to age 21." Other evidence suggests that William had a brother, Jasper, son of Jasper, who was already 21 at the time of the Orphan Court action. My question, then, is the Jasper Kennick listed in the Black Books, Jasper the father or Jasper the son? Does the evidence available allow us to make any reasonable assumptions on that issue? Any insights will be appreciated.

    3. I don't know if this helps or just adds to the confusion: Helen Wolseley mentions 'cousin' Jane Lowe who married a Calvert and became Lady Baltimore. [MD Hist. Vol 51 #1, The Lowes of Denby.] Unfortunately I didn't copy it. Helen was a cousin of Mary Wolseley Brooke (Roger), and niece ? to Anne Wolseley who married Phillip Calvert " My cousin Mary Wolseley went to our Aunt Calvert and was married to a Mr Brooke....her father was Walter Wolseley he was my grandfathers Sir Thomas Wolseley's son, elder brother to my father of Wolseley Bridge in Staffordshire. " Helen Wolseley Spratt was married to Thomas Spratt DD Bishop of Rochester. Mary Wolseley ( abt 1643-1705) was the second wife of Roger Brooke of Calvert County. Roger's brother Basil also married a Calvert. I have the Wolseley line back to Edward I but no mention of Lowe, so perhaps Helen was just referring to Jane Lowe as cousin in a friendly way, not a familial one? Early wills of Md can be requested from the Maryland Archives, I have been collecting those of my Stone, Dawson, Mackall families. I think it is about $10 and a wait, even if you go there they won't copy them that day. It can be a little pricey so I am working my way back and with multiple MD lines I have not reached the Lowes yet, but I agree that original sources are the best. Ris

    1. Looking for Ridgeway / Phipps connections from 1870 -1925
    2. Gene Sears
    3. Hi Folks, I'm looking for Ridgeway / Phipps connections from 1870 -1925. My dad always thought Clarence Phipps of Annapolis or Baltimore was his 3rd cousin, or thought of him as a 3rd cousin. Dad died in 1962 so my memory may not be perfect. Never the less I haven't been able to find a direct connection (maybe I haven't waited long enough). Recently, I discovered that Georgianna Ridgeway, listed as a niece, was living in my grgrandmother's (Isabella Mangum) household. Georgianna was 10, my grandmother, Annie Priscilla Watkins was 8 when the 1880 census was taken. My grgrandmother (she was divorced per the census) appears to have married Georgianna's older brother Mordecai Ridgeway in 1881. I can see how a sense of relationship could develop, even if the absence of a blood connection. If Georgianna, one of her sibs, or if Isabella and Mordecai had children and one of them married into Clarence Phipps' family there could be a sense of family in the first case or an actual connection in the second case. So, who are the possible people here? 3. The MUDD arrival is a big issue. The A&D was 1634; some say a MUDD was on the ship, but Thomas Mudd the progenitor apparently arrived in MD from Virginia around 1676 or thereabouts. A Thomas Mudd prior to that time was in the West Indies, particularly Barbados and Antigua. Is this the same Thomas Mudd? It could be. Other MUDDs were in the West Indies as well.
