Do any of you use Google: There's a Sunnyside Avenue in Beltsville. There's a type of soil called the "Sunnyside Series"; its type location is in Prince Georges County, just off Beaverdam Road and 500 feet east of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. 3. Hi, all! Have found a memorial tribute to my grandfather, Circuit Court Judge Joseph Carbery Mattingly. In it there is mention that he moved with his family to "Sunnyside" at age 6 months. I'm guessing this is in Oxon Hill, MD as he then bought "Greenwood" and settled there with his own family. Is there anyway I can find out the location of "Sunnyside?" This would be in 1871 or 2 as he was born in July of 1871. Would appreciate any help in this matter! Best regards, Elizabeth

    1. Lomax McKnew, b. 1675
    2. Norma Thompson
    3. Does any of you Lomax researchers know who were the parents of Lomax McKnew? I have only found 4 traces of him, but I don't have very good Prince George's County Records. The first trace of him is when he witnessed a deed in Charles county in 1705, and the last trace is when he received a payment during the Charles county probate of Thomas Osborne reported Jan 29 1731. He gave a deposition in Charles County 30 May 1721 concerning Christian Temple Manor that sets his birth year as 1675. I think this information makes him about the same age as Jeremiah MacKnew--if I am guessing correctly on Jeremiah's age. Thank you for any hints you can give. Norma

    1. DNA project - Bell
    2. We are looking for male descendants of the Bell name (or variation of Bell, Beal, Beall, Bale, etc.) for a DNA project. Prerequisite: you must be able to prove at least 4-5 generations of direct line male Bells. This is a Y-Chromosome project. The Y-Chromosome is passed down from father to son only and we are hoping to establish a commonality (or non-commonality) of Bell lines leading to Scotland, or elsewhere. Do you qualify? 3. In Maryland Marriages 1634-1777, Robert Barnes lists among his sources for Prince George's County the marriage records of St. John's (King George's or Piscataway) Parish, specifically a copy made in 1884 by Harrison, and now apparently located at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore. I am wondering if anyone has consulted these records. I am curious in particular whether anyone knows whether the records may also include baptismal records. Thanks for any help. 1. Dickerson
    2. Mary McVicker
    3. In the June 1987 issue of the Prince George's County Genealogical Society Bulletin (p. 171), in notes following abstracts of several wills (including one of Thomas Dickerson), Donald L. Wilson wrote that John Dickerson, son of Henry and Susannah Saratt Dickerson, was born 1720/21. Does anyone know on what evidence Mr. Wilson may have relied for that statement, or what may have been the source of the information? The marriage of Henry Dickerson and Susannah Saratt (or Surratt) is documented, but so far, I have seen no proof of who their children were or when they were born. I have seen a number of secondary sources that indicate they had three children, at least. These have been listed as John, Thomas, and Surratt. None of the secondary sources I have seen so far has indicated the source or documentation for this information, however. Thanks for any help on this question. Mary McVicker kmcv@execpc.com

    1. Thursby-Sasscer
    2. Jane Thursby
    3. Carol and any one else who likes the search Thanks for the information about Washington Hundred. I hadn't noticed that before and made the assumption that Edward and Ann had been in DC because William, their son, lived there by the 1820 DC census and Ann had left all her processions to William in her will which was probated in DC. Perhaps she had moved in with them by 1820. I need to look for when Edward or Ann sold/transferred the property in PGC. I have never found a record for it. No there is no will, inventory or any other documentation that I can find on Edward Thursby at least in Maryland. There are no cemetery records for Edward or Ann that I can find nor for William their son who died Jan 1, 1849 in Baltimore where he had moved sometime between 1840 and 1849 with his wife and children. His death notice in Baltimore doesn't mention another location even. William married a Sarah Kirkley in 1818 in DC and her brother lived in Baltimore at that time. This is why I believe he moved the family there..being older by 10 years than Ann and probably not well. Being near her family would have been better for her. He had sold all his property in DC including his slaves. It would be interesting to know what happened to his married sister. She could have been already deceased too being older. William served in the war of 1812 having enlisted in Alexandria, Virginia and Sarah petitioned the Maryland state legislature for a pension in the 1870's and received it. I know where Sarah is buried but William is not there. As to other children...according to the census there was only one male child and two female children. I know name of only one daughter. Church records would be good but what religion or church and would it show Edward's parents names? I know where some of the Sasscer's are buried and others are on family land plots. Oddly enough some are in Croome in the old church of Rev Claggett fame. My mother's mother was born a Claggett of this family and my parents weren't to meet for another 150 years in Baltimore. I am not so much worried about Edward's descendents because I know who they all are for the most part and most importantly the male descendent, my direct ancestor. I want to know who Edward's parents are!!! searching still Jane

    3. Jane, Perhaps I can help clear up a few of your mysteries. The URL below shows the development of hundreds in Prince George's County. Washington Hundred was formed in 1777 from Mattapany, a hundred that was formed when the eastern lands of PGC were still a part of Calvert County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdpgeorg/text/hundreds.htm Scroll to the last map. You will see that Washington Hundred is not near Washington DC at all. It is in the southeasten part of PGC. The naming convention that I have found in a number of English families that I have researched is as follows: First son is named after the father's father. Second son is named after the mother's father. First daughter is named after the mother's mother. Second daughter is named after the father's mother. I am making no claim that this is the one and only naming convention, but have used it successfully to track several parents down. Knowing that Edward & Ann married in 1786, and with information derived from the 1790-1810 census data, you probably have an idea about how many children Edward & Ann had and about when they were born. The number of children under 10 in 1810 also provides a clue to when Edward either died or left the family. A low count may indicate the date closer to 1800. A higher count suggests a date closer to 1810. From the information you have given, you have identified William as a child of Edward and Ann and Amy as a possible child. Were there more indicated in the census? The best place to look for information on these families is the land records. Start with the index. You may find that Ann or Edward deeded land to other children. Look for Thursby to Thursby transactions and also check for any Thursby to Singleton records. Land records involving the settlement of an estate contain the names and locations of all the heirs. You may even find records pointing to Edward's parents or siblings. Even though Edward didn't have a will, there ought to be an accounting of his estate in the Orphan Court records. If you know what religion this family followed you may be able to track down church records. Their burial records may be included in "Stones & Bones." Good luck!! -- Carol Askey Maryland USGenWeb Coordinator Allegany & Prince George's County MDGenWeb Coordinator

    2. Jane Thursby
    3. I am at a dead end and need help. I have an Edward Thursby who married an Ann Sasscer on January 25, 1786 in Prince George’s County. Thanks to the help of several people I have learned much about the Sasscer family including her ancestry but Edward Thursby is a complete mystery. From what I can determine the Sasscer family own a lot of land in PG and after Ann was married her father, William Sasscer, gave them land that later became part of Washington DC. They named a son, William T. Thursby most likely after her father. I believe they also had a least one daughter whom I believe is the Amy in the following DC marriage record. MITCHELL, SINGLETON marr. THURSBY, AMY 06/02/1820 Because early census records don’t give much information I haven’t discovered anything about Edward Thursby. Edward is in the 1790 and 1800 census but in the 1810 census the listing is Thursby, A. MD PRINCE GEORGE'S CO. WASHINGTON HUNDRED 010. From this I figure that Edward has died (or is gone) but I found no will. Ann dies in 1828 with a will leaving everything to William and William’s first born and only living grandson at that point also named William but with Edward as a middle name. Edward is the mystery. I think that William Sasscer wouldn’t have let his daughter marry a nobody who just suddenly shows up out of the blue. Was one of Ann’s brothers in the Revolutionary war and maybe Edward was a fellow soldier he met making Edward from another place all together (i.e. not Maryland). I doubt that Edward had just arrived from England/Scotland/Ireland and been allowed to married Ann. We had just finished the war and that doesn’t feel right. HELP! Any ideas? Any ideas of where I can begin a search. I am at a dead end.
