I haven't finished REALLY digging into the subject, but a few things came up immediately, so I thought I would share. ****The birthdate of the brother of the Benjamin Bateman who supposedly married Elizabeth Dodd is recorded as: Charles County Court and Land Records, Volume II p. 129 Liber P, Page 211 George Bateman, s/o George & Elizabeth of Pickawaxen, b. 7 Dec 1692 ****Mark Penn's birth record is given as: Marke Penn, s/o William & Mary of Wicomico, b. 24 Nov 1692. ****Jane Cottrell's is given as: Jane Cotterell, d/o James & Elizabeth Cotterell of head of Wiccocomico River, b. 15,Aug 1690. ****Now Jane Burford. Her husband, Richard Dodd, has this birth recorded : p. 20 Charles County Land Records, Volume III Dod, Richard, s/o Richard and Mary Dod of Potomac River, b. 13 Jan 1670 On the same page is a birth recording of Jane's child: Anne Dod, d/o Richard and Jane, head of Baker's Creek, b. 24 Sep 1692 I found this entry concerning Jane's father, Thomas Burford's will: Charles County Land Records, Volume III 59 Liber Z, Page 240 Recorded at request of George Plater, Esq.: 2 Nov 1705; Indenture from James Cottrell, Gent., and Elizabeth his wife, one of the daughters and co-heirs of Thomas Burford, to George Plater, Gent.; John Pope, planter, by indenture dated 16 Oct 1682 for consideration of 10,000# tobacco to Tho. Burford, Gent., a half part of the plantation where John Pope then dwelled called _____ on the Potomac River; bounded by Baker's Creek; containing 200 acres; Thomas Clipsham, Gent., and Susannah his wife, by deed dated 10 Jun 1683. for 4,000* tobacco sold to Buford a parcel called Clipsham at the mouth of Baker's Creek; bounded by "Marshland" and the Potomac Creek at the mouth of the Creek; laid out for 68 acres; Thomas Burford's will 13 Mar 1686 bequeathed to his son, Thomas Burford, the aforementioned land; the son Thomas d. intestate and land fell to Ann Plater, wife of George Plater, Elizabeth Cottrell wife of James Cottrell, Jane Dod wife of Richard Dod, and Frances Burford, the co-heirs of sd. Tho. Burford, dec'd; for "the sum of pound Sterling" paid by Plater, James Cottrell and Elizabeth ack. aforementioned 2 tracts of land their 4th part of the moiety of the plantation of John Pope; /s/ James Cottrell, Elizabeth Cottrell (mark); wit. Thomas Legmore, John Manning, Danll. Dullany; 2 Nov 1705 James Cottrell and Elizabeth his wife ack. deed; no alienation paid; recorded in May 1706 I found this entry which is probably the recording of Jane's father's inventory. Thomas Burford, Esq. 9.384 I £202.0,11 Jun 27 1687 Appraisers: Humphry Warren, William Dent. In addition, I found this entry which probably refers to Jane's mother, Ann (Pope) Burford, as having land, which implies she was a widow. Charles County Court and Land Records, Volume II, p. 137 Liber R, Page 234 25 Dec 1690; Indenture from James Cottrell, planter, to Nicholas Wise, planter; 100 acres adjoining land of Anne Burford; for 15 years; /s/ James Cottrell; wit. Ralfe Gwyn (mark), Tho. Burford I think these entries show that Jane Burford Dodd would not have married Mark Penn.
