I, too, have Grimes in Maryland. My earliest Grimes is Joshua Grimes born in 1805 in Frederick County/Carroll County. He married Eliza Barnes born in 1816 in Carroll County. I have been told that the Harrison File at the Westminster Library that belongs to the Carroll County Genealogy Society has all the answers for the Grimes. I have not been able to get up there to see this file. I bet it has answers for you since your ancestor was names William Harrison Grimes. Maybe your relative and mine were relatives.
