However, there is one Hagner in my family tree. On April 10, 1827, an Eliza Ann Hagner married Joseph Hopper Nicholson (b. 1806 Baltimore - d. 1872 Annapolis). Joseph Hopper Nicholson was the son of Judge and former U.S. Congressman Joseph Hopper Nicholson. Judge Joseph Hopper Nicholson was the brother-in-law of Francis Scott Key and it was Judge Nicholson who set "The Star Spangled Banner" to music and had it printed. Key's original handwritten poem remained in the Nicholson family for 75 years before eventually going to the Maryland Historical Society. Your Sophia was born about 1825 and my Eliza Hagner was married in 1827. There are only two Hagner families (George Hagner and William Hagner) listed in Baltimore in the 1830 Census and both live in the same ward. I would think almost certainly related. The youngest female in the William Hagner family was listed as between age 10 and 14. However, in the household of George Hagner, there was one female age less than 5 and two females age 5-10. Thus, George Hagner seems like your best bet if Sophia was born in 1825 or within five years of 1825. Recorded (Chancery Record) 36, p. 106. Accession No: 17,898-12412. MSA S512-12215 1/39/4/ The name "Isabella Hagner" caught my eye. Perhaps, your Sophia was called Isabella or, more likely, she was given her mother's first name as her middle name. I have had some remarkable successes in breaking down family brick walls from court records and land records. Joseph Hopper Nicholson was a very prominent man. Not only was he the son of Judge Joseph Nicholson (b. Chestertown, lived in Centreville) who was Chief Justice of Baltimore County (and City then) and a Judge on the MD Court of Appeals but he (the son married to Hagner) was a high official in Maryland government for many years (Attorney General if memory serves me correctly). No doubt, the Hagner family was at least as prominent. If your Hagner is related to this family (and it would appear almost certainly so), there probably is a lot of information out there somewhere. Sorry I cannot provide any more help than this but maybe you will find a clue somewhere in the above information. If you do find that your Sophia was related to my Eliza and how, could you please send me that information? While I have the children of Eliza Ann Hagner and Joseph Hopper Nicholson, I have not tried to go any further with this branch of the family tree (still all consumed with my direct lines). But, I always am interested in adding branches to the family tree. By the way, thank you for the huge effort in posting of Queen Anne's marriages.
