    1. [MDGEN] Thomas Hall
    2. Rodney Hall
    3. Does anyone have information on a Thomas Hall listed in the Cincinnati Ohio directory of 1836 as a Grocer? I am trying to determine if he was from Maryland and could be related to my James Hall from Maryland who appeared in Cincinnati about the same time. My James Hall married Matilda Secrist in 1834. Her father was a Grocer so I am thinking there could be a connection since Thomas and James lived near each other and it is possible James met his wife through Thomas. James had 2 children in Cincinnati, Henderson and Sally. About 1840 they moved to Bracken county Kentucky had several more children, Theresa,Amanda, Catherine, John and Joseph. (possibly others not yet accounted for)About 1860 they moved to Livingston county Ky and that is where most of the children were married. Many got the license in Pope County Illinois. 3. Now that's weird! I tried send this to ya < billie & I couldn't!? Perhaps because we're offically not cybergate customes now! I don't know! No it was different! it was like BRL a number & another ISP. I thought that it was you though! I like to stay up-to-date if I can keep up! Grin! Have you got your software that earthlink was to send for us customers? I had had a virus, & erased all my stuff from mycomputer of course, & then we were waiting for their software to come, but my husband got antsy finally! I could go to the local library to play! Grin! Last night he finally got tired of waiting for them to send the software, so here i am! Voile'!!! Just wondering. I don't figure it'll be here for at least, another couple weeks or the end of the month! The company sold to Earthlink and raised >the price. What do ya mean raised it it's still or alittle more a couple dollars more, that's all! My connections is alittle more slower than cybergate was, & clicking on the messages they don't change right away! Are you having any problems like these, by chance? Was womndering if I am the only one!? Let me know i fyou would? My Palmers are the only MD names for both MD & OH. What parts of MD are you doing? Me. I'm doing Baltimore City or county. I'm not sure as yet. I know that they were in existance in the mid-1850's about the time of my relations births. David & his brother, Henry. I haven't got much to add to my little info as yet. I hope to get to Ohio in July so I can add to my lines. WEll, nice chatting to ya. Are ya going up this year? To Beaver county area? Perhaps we could meet sometime? I had a email messenger friend that came for a visit last month. It was a wonderful day. What kinds of records do they Pittsburgh have do ya know? Have anything at the courthouse downtown? I know of a research library in Oakland, but was wondering? Any suggestions would be great! Cathy -----Original Message----- From: Billie R. 3. Special rubing paper can be purchased from monuement manufacturers, that when palce on the stone and rubbed with a tennis ball will bring out the engraving.. This is to be able to read the stone, not improve it. Cleaning is best left to the professional, because materials and technics vary with the material the stone is made from. 3. There are sites on the internet that deal with this subject. All the good sites suggest the use of Kodak Photo-Flo to clean stones. This product seems to do the least amount of damage if used correctly. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/repairtoolbox.html http://waynesville.k12.mo.us/Schools/LEAPworld/Cemetery/Restoration/Re storation%20Techniques.html http://members.aol.com/ctgravenet/dosdonts.htm There are many sites. Some better than others. I do not clean stones. Those I find difficult to read are either buried or are so old as to contain cracks which can retain harmful chemicals. What I do instead to read the inscriptions is to use distilled water. I do not suggest using tap, rain or bottled water because of the mineral and chemical content. Pour the distilled water slowly over the face of the area you want to read using a soft new natural bristle paint brush to spread the water on the surface. Here is the key to all this. The surface will dry first. The inscription and cracks will dry more slowly. Watch the stone as it dries and you should see the inscription start to appear. At several points during the drying process, digital photographs are taken so a comparison can be made. The idea is to wet the stone only once so not to further any present damage. Please do not do this when the temperature can drop to freezing. This was done on many stones with great success. One example was a stone in the Benson cemetery in Newcomb, Talbot County, Maryland. It was almost next to impossible to read the name on the stone. It appeared the inscription read "Charlotte Morling who" on the first line. The initials C M were at the top of the stone. Using the distilled water, this proved to be the case. Using different viewing angles and times of day also proves helpful. Here something to sit on comes in handy as one should be eye-level with the stone. The best time appears to be when the sun is low in the sky, either early morning or evening depending on the stone orientation. Most, but not all, of the early stones should have their inscriptions facing west. It also helps to record the transcription and have another person listen to/read the recording while looking at the stone. Many errors have been caught this way. When I visit the cemeteries of my ancestors, many are in bad shape and sitting in fields that have been farmed. I find damage done by farm equipment, stones that have been plowed under, knocked over, broken or simply removed and even used as paving stones. Some have just disappeared (stolen?) or have sunk. What will become of these old cemeteries is yet to be determined. Some stones have been moved to more permanent locations. To restore a cemetery is a major undertaking requiring expert knowledge, careful planning and a considerable investment as many are sitting on private land. What will happen to the monuments of our ancestors? WyeOak

    2. You should never use anything on a grave stone stronger than water and a very solf brush. If there is lichen on it and short piece of 3/8" dowel cut at a 45 degree angle on one end can be used gently to remove some of the lichen. Mirrors really do a wonderful job if you reflect the light ACROSS the stone from the side to create good shadows. You don't want the light reflected directly from the front. Using chalk, powder, shaving cream or any other foreign substance is a no no. The stones are porous and while you can't see it the powders etc will get in there and further deteriorate the stones. While rain will wash some of the substances away, it will also wash them into the stone. Good luck

    3. A friend suggested using cheap baking flour and a paint brush. It works well and washes right off with no damage to the stone. I also use a piece of cardboard about 1 foot by 2 feet with aluminum foil over it. Hold the cardboard beside the stone and reflect the available light across the stone. The cardboard is easy to carry and works as well as a mirror. Roger Kearney

    3. Chalk will work and then washed off with the rain, but be sure to pat it in the grooves as you followed them with your hands. If you pat and not rub the stone will be safe. Pink chalk works the best. 3. My sisters and I have luck with three methods: white chalk in the indentations you can feel; lead pencil in the indentations before taking a Polaroid shot; and tracing on paper with a pencil over the indentations. This worked the best for a long quote. Jean3024 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
