Norma was the granddaughter of Essie Ray (Harshbarger) Ferguson and my 2nd cousin. Piedmont Herald, Thursday, Nov. 3, 1966 Navy Lt. (j. g.) Clarence Dale Miller, 30, of Shaft, husband of Norma Ferguson Miller, formerly of Piedmont, was one of the 31 pilots who died in the burning aircraft carrier Oriskany Wednesday morning of last week off the North Viet Nam coast. Nine sailors also perished. Lt. Miller, who flew a Sky Hawk, and the other pilots had been daily risking their lives flying jet planes against targets in North Viet Nam. The Shaft pilot had been in the Navy nine and a half years, He took his flight training at Pensacola and attended the Navy Post Graduate School at Monterey, Calif. Lt. Miller had been on the carrier in Viet Nam waters since May and was due home in December on leave. Only a month ago, his wife joined him for two weeks while he was on leave in Hong Kong. She and their three children, Dawn, 3 !/2 years, and twin daughters, Amy and Beth, 2, reside with his parents, Clarence and Elaine (Skidmore) Miller at Shaft.
