Stephen Schlosnagle's book Garrett County: A History of Maryland's Tableland quotes a Thomas Brandt in 1900 that "The first political meeting that was ever held in Oakland...was held in a ten pin alley located a little way north of Kennedy's grog shop. It was during the Buchanan and Fremont campaign of 1856." My gggm was Mary Kennedy who married John Tuhill 28 Dec 1853, then James Weisman 11 Feb 1863. She was related, and I am trying to find out exactly how, to Kennedys shown on the Oakland 1870 census as Margaret Kennedy 39, Saloon Keeper, with children Bridget 16, and William 12. Bridget married William Broderick a CW veteran from Canada, and the children of William and Bridget according to my great uncle were "close relatives." Bridget's obit says she was the daughter of William Kennedy. Does anyone know anything at all about "Kennedy's grog shop", or the people mentioned? Any help appreciated.
