Hi Bonnie: Most census haven't been indexed, I don't think. Those that have been often contain errors that can cause you to miss an individual you're looking for. The handwriting varies from excellent to unreadable. Names are sometimes misinterpreted or incorrect, etc. I have S-K's disks from 1850-1900 and use them. I also use Ancestry.com's Images Online. Their images are slow to download and again, most years are not indexed. Even worse, many years are not even separated by locality. All the towns and townships in Hampshire County, VA are lumped together under "Unknown Townships" in 1860, for instance. So It's slow going. This might be of interest- 1850 Allegany County census, Glades District 10 (?), (no page #), SK Image 57b, taken Aug. 20, 749/ 743 All but Martha and Hugh were born in Virginia; they were born in MD. ("John McRobie", HH) "Henry", WM age 5 (1845). .................... In 1860 "Henry McCroby" was age 15 (1845) in the Hartmansville area of Hampshire County, Virginia. Page 201; Ancestry.com Image 205. Also "Jane S. Paugh", WF , age 7 (1853). Both are shown born in Virginia. >From the prior page, "John Murphy", WM age 36 (1824) "Phoebe A.", WF age 3 (1857; "Mary E.", WF age 2 (1858), all born in VA. So it appears Henry McCroby and Jane S. Paugh were living in the John Murphy household. -SJB Aug., 2003 ...................... I have Henry as the son of John W. McRobie. Regarding "Jane S. Paugh"; b. 1853- I have Jane S. Paugh married to John J. "McRoby" in the 1900 census born Feb. 1858. Although there's 5 years difference in Jane's age and she shows born in VA in 1860 and born in MD in 1900; I suspect both records may refer to the same person. Sam, I have some info about Phoebe you mention below - give me some time on the other members of John Murphy's household. Phobe A is not 3 years old, it is written wrong. She must be 23. Phoebe Ann O'Haver is the wife of John Murphy. They had 10 children, the first of which appears here, below Phobe, Mary E. John Murphy b 6 Sep 1826 Phoebe Ann O'Haver b 5 Sep 1836 children: Mary Eveline b 23 Dec 1858 Thomas Riley Murphy b 18 Jun 1861 Harriet Victory b 7 Feb 1864 Frances May b 24 May 1866 Elinor Blanche b 2 Jan 1869 Henry Pool b 19 Jul 1871 Elizabeth Jane or Lizzie 18 Sep 1873 Florence b 28 Feb 1876 John Feymore b 11 Feb 1876 Gracie b 4 May 1881 The 1870 census for Mineral Co WV, New Creek PO, Elk Township, (10 years after the 1860 you sent in Hampshire Co VA) shows: Line 4 Dwelling 11 Family 10 Murphy, John age 44 , Phebe A age 32 , Mary E age 10 , Thos R age 9 , Harriett V age 6 , Frances M age 4 , Elinor age 1 I have to look oer the Janes S Paugh thing. I struggled with that one for many years. She is the widow of John J McCroby, and had four children Daniel FLora or Florinda, James B and Foster B. She was widowed by John, and married 5 Mar 1924 Fransis M McCrobie. I believe it was in her pension papers, but I later changed her name from Paugh to Wright, and the name is Susan Jane, or Jane S - you will see it both ways. I will have to study that one later and get back to you woth more references Let me just tease you with this: Francis M is the son of John W McCrobie, who is married to Margaret Murphy. His first wife was Huldah Frances Murphy. I need a break! --------Original Message-------- This might be of interest- 1850 Allegany County census, Glades District 10 (?), (no page #), SK Image 57b, taken Aug. 20, 749/ 743 All but Martha and Hugh were born in Virginia; they were born in MD.
