Hello Mary Jane: Your g-grandparents must have been John Lower Fitzwater, son of Silas Fitzwater? This is what information I have on him- 1850 Federal census, Maryland, Allegany County, Glades District, page 91 or 46a, (SK Image 46a) taken Aug. 12, 1850 617/ 620 Two doors from Nelson Fitzwaters. All but Silas Fitzwaters born in MD. School age children attended school. ("Silas Fitzwaters", HH) "John", WM age 10 (1840), attended school. ............. 1870 census, Allegany County, MD, Election Dist. 1, Altamont P. O., taken July 22, 1870, Pages 2B & 3A, SK Images 2B & 3A, 31/ 31 None in the family able to read or write. All but Silas born in MD; School age children all attended school. ("Fittswater, Silas", HH) "John", WM age 30 (1840), Farm Laborer, born in MD. .............. "Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County", compiled by Garrett County Historical Society, 1988; page 229-230: "THE FITZWATER FAMILY" "Children of Silas and Martha Lower Fitzwater" (3) John Lower, b. March 10, 1840, d. April, 1914, m. Hepzilah George. ................ Silas Fitzwater's tombstone indicates he was born 1806, but the 1850 & 1870 census indicate he was born 1810-1811. Regarding Ruth Fitzwater who married John W. Junkins- Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County says Hezekiah James Fitzwater was born in Dec., 1784. We have no year of birth for Ruth Fitzwater, but her husband John w. Junkins was reportedly born in Ireland in 1780. Ruth apparently died young, because in 1816 John Junkins married Elizabeth Anderson. So Ruth and Hezekiah James Fitzwater would have been near enough the same ages to have been brother & sister, but no records have been found that would indicate they were. Census records are no help, because before 1850, only heads of households were named.
