No listing of the cemetery in Garrett County Graves -----Original Message----- From: Art Grady [mailto:gradya3@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 1:31 AM To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MDGARRET] Shaffer Hill Cemetery The St. Peter Catholic Church 150 Years book on p. 14 has an item I am hoping someone can tell me more about. It reads: The stone for the present Church was donated by Charles Shaffer. It was hand cut from "the cliffs at the Shaffer Hill Cemetery". This place was also know as the burial site for Catholics before Father O'Sullivan purchased the property that is now part of the Oakland Cemetery. Does anyone know where Shaffer Hill Cemetery is? Are there stones listed in Garrett County Graves? I am trying to find out about a Lizzie Shaffer who was married to Henry Haskell and died before 1866. This cemetery would be a logical place to look for connections. Any help appreciated. Art Grady --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Art I have been to this location. Friends of ours live near the town limits on Herrington Manor Road (W. Liberty Street) near Leighton Drive. We walked up the hill behind their house (west) a half mile or less to Shaffer Cemetery. Several stones existed with only three initials on each stone. The placements looked as if some could have been children. I didn't see any initials that looked familiar and didn't take notes. Earrlier while going through an old Republican Newspaper film, I had found the obit of my great grandfacher (Thos. Coddington) The obit stated that he was buried in the "Shaffer Cemetery" and I was confused because his stone is located in the Oakland Cemetery. Much later, I discovered where Shaffer Cemetery is(was) located. There is an interesting story about "the moving of the cemetery." Seems a ceremony was held at the Shaffer Cemetery. The group then walked to the Oakland Cemetery where another ceremony was held. Thus moved the spirits where moved. I found it all very fascinating. Maybe you ought to look into what part of the Oakland Cemetery you refer too the part purchased by Father O'Sullivan. Also, just an idea - could Shaffer Hill be a geographic location? i.e. the cemetery at Shaffer Hill? -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 05:41:41 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [MDGARRET] Shaffer Hill Cemetery No listing of the cemetery in Garrett County Graves -----Original Message----- From: Art Grady [mailto:gradya3@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 1:31 AM To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MDGARRET] Shaffer Hill Cemetery The St. Peter Catholic Church 150 Years book on p. 14 has an item I am hoping someone can tell me more about.
