Hi Bonnie: Let's start with Elizabeth "Betsy" McRobie being the daughter of Elisha Dewitt McRobie. In fact, I even wonder what proof there is that Elisha's (b. 1791) middle name was Dewitt? A child's mother's maiden name was sometimes used as the middle name of a child; but if Elisha was married to an "unknown Furley", that kind of rules that out. In the 1850 census he was Elisha; in 1860 Elisha D.; 1870 Elisha, and Elisha on his tombstone. I wonder what the connection to the Dewitt's might have been for him to get that middle name? Anyway, regarding "Betsy" being his daughter; I don't know. Education varied so much with the people up to 1900, when school age children were first required to attend school 3 months a year in Garrett County. I think a lot of people actually didn't even know when they were born, according to age variances you find in census data. Then again, if the census taker came around when Mom was working beside Pop in a field 1/4 mile from the house and a 10 year daughter was in the house, he may have gotten his information from children. And, some no doubt lied about their ages. Isaac Allen Paugh I think was one of those who lied when he got married the second time. Elisha D. McRobie's daughter Elizabeth: She appears 12 years old in 1850 (1838); 22 years in 1860 (1838). Two consis- tent years in a row. In 1870 she wasn't in her father's household. Elizabeth "Betsy" McRobie was in Philip Paugh's household in 1860. In 1860 Elisha McRobie's daughter Elizabeth was still at home. In 1850 her year of birth figures to 1827; 1860, 1825; 1870, 1832; 1880, 1828. Again, except for the 1870 census, her age is _fairly consistent- 1825-1828. Just based on the census data, I'd say Elisha McRobie's daughter was probably not the Elizabeth who married Philip Paugh. There is the possibility she may have been born in Virginia (or WV) to another McRobie; or it's possible she was married to a McRobie who had died very young; like the first half of the 1850's. But I doubt if she was Elisha McRobie's daughter. As to Elisha McRobie having married an "unknown Furley"; I also rather doubt that. > From "Charles W. and Neva Layton Harvey" <harvey.c.w@worldnet.att.net> Jan 21 ,2002 > "Asenth "Seine" Davis was born Abt. September 1808 in Hampshire Co., VA. She married > (1) Elisha McRobie. She married (2) George Tasker April 05, 1832, son of Richard Tasker > and Margaret Tasker. He was born Abt. 1811 in Kitzmiller, MD, and died Bef. 1850 in WV. This information can't be accurate either. The 1850; 1860; and 1870 census all three show "Azeneth" or Zenith as the wife of Elisha McRobie. If she was married to George Tasker, she was married to him first; rather than second. The quote above was taken from Marshall Brown's book on the Harvey's; Brown's information regarding the Taskers was quoted directly from Hoye's Pioneer Families. "Hoye" says on page 520 "George Tasker married Seine Davis". So I have Azeneth,-"Zenith"-"Seine" (Davis) Tasker married to Elisha McRobie. Hoye only lists two sons for George Tasker and "Seine" Davis, so I figure George Tasker died sometime before 1850 and Elisha McRobie married his widow. The thing is, all of us who put words on paper make mistakes; family history writers, census takers, preachers who kept church records, those who entered family history in old Bibles long after their ancestors were gone, all of us. Fifty years from now our grandchildren will be sorting through ours. Sam Bonnie McCroby Wuensche wrote: > Sam! I was just looking for your addy to write you about this.
