Does anyone know where to find info. on a baby born in 1931. No one knew anything about this child until I sent for my husbands cert. birth certificate. He is listed as twin and several lines down it says, how many delivered at this birth. (or words to that effect) and the Dr. has written living one stillborn one. Would there be a birth cert., death cert. , record at court house. undertaker, corner, where should I start to look to find info. about this. Would appreciate any help. Peggy
Hi Peggy, A REGISTRATION of death for a stillborn is usually required in the case of a pregnancy as advanced as this one obviously was (where the stillborn's twin survived). Whether or not the stillborn's birth was also registered depends on what may have been the practice of the day in that particular county. My grandfather has a stillborn nephew, b/d 1907. I found a death registration for the baby but not a birth registration. On the other hand, in the same era but in a different state, I found both a birth & death registration for one stillborn. BTW....birth, marriage & death CERTIFICATES are not kept on file in county or state record offices, only the REGISTRATION records are kept on file. Certificates are documents that the offices produce on request for a fee. Some offices still transcribe information from the REGISTRATION entries onto a form while some simply photocopy the original registration record now. In either case the clerk then applies an embossed seal to the document which "certifies" the information to be either a true transcript or actual photocopy of that event's registration record... thus the document's name: CERTIFICATE. Since it's unlikely you would have any legal need for a death CERTIFICATE for your husband's stillborn twin, I would see if you could just order an uncertified photocopy of the death registration instead.
