I have Isaac Allen Paugh married to Nancy Boyer as a son of James Edward Paugh and Isabel Enlow; rather than the son of Betsy McRobie. Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County (432-433) says Betsy McRobie had a son Isaac, but I don't believe he was Isaac Allen Paugh. In fact, two census records (below) indicate his name was "Isaiah", rather than Isaac. I think all of the census records below refer to Betsy. -Sam 1850 Federal census, Maryland, Allegany County, Glades District, page 45a or 89, SK Image 45a, taken Aug. 12, 1850- 608/ 611 Household of Nelson, age 33; and Sarah Baker age 32- "Elisabeth McRobie", WF age 23 (1827), born in MD. "Ellen" (McRobie), WF age 3 (1847), born in MD. They were living beside Joseph Dewitt, son of John Dewitt. .............. 1860 census, Maryland, Allegany County, page 325 or 681, SK Image 681. *MAY* be the Pleasant Valley area south of Oakland. "Isaiah", WM age 8 (1852). "Clarissa", WF age 4 (1856). "Jonathan H.", WM age 2 (1858). Neighbors- William and Druscilla (Harvey) Lower; Thompson, Henry, & Nathan Lower; Joseph, John G. & Isaac King; John Frey, Samuel McGiffin; PHILIP POUGH; Nelson Murphy; Mary Moore, Theophilus Wilt, Johnson White. ............... 1870 Federal census, Election District 10, Oakland Post Office, Page 5, SK Image 291A, taken Aug. 30, 1870, the area of Bethlehem Church. All born in MD. All family members are shown unable to read. 27/ 27 "Paugh, Phillip", WM age appears to be "41" (1829), Farmer, no Real Estate, $700 Personal Estate. "Elizabeth", WF age 38 (1832), Keeps House. "Isaiah", WM age 19 (1851), Farm Work. "Jane", WF age 15 (1855), Domestic Work, attended school. "Jonathan", WM age 12 (1858), Farm Work, attended school. "David", WM age 5 (1865). "Daniel W.", WM age 2 (1868). "Ellen" may have been married by 1870, since she doesn't appear. Enumerated just before Elisha Harvey, son of Nathaniel Harvey. This places them in the area of Bethlehem Church. ................. 1880 Federal census, Maryland, Garrett County, Ryan's Glade, District 100, page 8, SK Image 100-08, taken June 18, 1880. Dwelling 53, Family 69 "Paugh, Elizabeth H.", WF age 52 (1828), Widow, Keeping House, unable to write, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA. "Jonathan", WM age 22 (1858), Son, Married, Farmer, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA (NOTE: above, Elizabeth is shown to have been born in MD). "Rebecca", WF age 19 (1861), "Daughter Law", Married, At Home, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother b. VA. For some reason a separate Family Visit "70" was entered on the next line, but the Dwelling number remained the same; 53. "David D." (Paugh), WM age 14 (1866), Son, Single, At Home, born in MD, Father born in MD, Mother born in VA. So from this census record it's not clear whether Elizabeth was born in MD or Virginia. The family was enumerated between Benjamin and Isaac Moon, placing them on Bethlehem Church Road just north of the intersection of Combination Road. -SJB Aug., 2003. .............. *Did Betsy McRobie have Ellen Paugh and Isaiah (Isaac?) before she married Philip H. Paugh? Was her maiden name McRobie; or had she been married to a McRobie? No clue. ...............
Sam! I was just looking for your addy to write you about this. Yes - I have been looking at Census reports now for a couple of days, and was going to ask you for a file if you have it. I am trying to figure this one out, and I have seen the Ron Hoffman file at Ancestry that shows 2 Isaac Allen Paughs ..etc, etc. As far as I know, Elizabeth - or according to Wilma Sanders, "Betsey" had a son named Isaac McRobie WITH Philip H Paugh. I have since seen suggestions that she might have had him before she was married, however, I have this in my file as her children: Ellen b 1848 Isiah 2 Aug 1851 Isaac Allen McCrobie Paugh 1856 Johnathan Paugh Clara Paugh David Paugh Daniel Paugh Of course, the first 2 at least were born BEFORE her marriage to Phillip - which are as you state Ellen and Isiah. I am thinking that Wilma has a mistake here. Her mistake is perpetuated on the Ancestry files. This is what it has: ID: I00962 Name: Elizabeth MCCROBIE Sex: F Birth: ABT. 1838 Birth: 1825 Death: Reference Number: 962 Note: They called her Betsey Father: Elisha Dewitt MCCROBIE , Sr. b: 1791 in Maryland Mother: Unknown FURLEY Marriage 1 Philip Henry PAUGH b: 1805 Married: 20 JAN 1855 Married: 20 JAN 1855 in Cumberland, Maryland 3 2 Children Isaac A. And 2 Johnathans, one b 1857, one b 1858. This is strange indeed. This needs some further examination. Here is what I was looking for you for - I have seen a Census, where there was a Paugh Family with Isaac listed as McCrobie (spelling?). I can't seem to locate it. At the time, I had him as an "unconnected" McCrobie, never putting him together with Elizabeth until I saw Wilma Sander's files, which I went to Waterloo and Xeroxed back in 1993. I have every sheet she used to compile her book, including some information that was not printed. She was amazed I had the Chutzpah (read "brazen boldness") to bring my own office-sized copier (and a very long extension cord) in the station wagon! What could she do except let me bring it into the dining room? So back to Isaac and the Census. Do you have this report with Isaac? For some reason, I can see it in my head as think about it. And maybe it was in Pennsylvania - does that make any sense?Because I didn't know where he belonged, I thought that maybe the Paugh's were going to be some relative - or step-parents. Can you help me on this? I think I am finally going nuts. Bon mccroby@hotmail.com
Wait - wait --- How can Phillip be 60 in 1860 and 41 in 1870? Or Elizabeth 23 in 1850, 35 in 1860, 38 in 1870 and 52 in 1880 And abt the question of whether Elizabeth was born in MD or VA? Could there be TWO Elizabeths? In the 1880 Census below, Elizabeth Paugh, widow says she was born in MD, but Johnathan says his mother is born in VA? Maybe this was the Enumerator's mistake. Afterlooking at the original - it looks like he dipped his pen in the ink again between --- well, looks like he filled it right down the column... nawh, I'm not going to try and guess.
