MCCROBIE b: 1856 > "Clarissa" age 4 (1856) in the 1860 census and "Jane" age 15 (1855) in 1870 were almost surely the same child. "Hoye" refers to her as "Clara" married to a King. (Wouldn't be surprised if she showed up someplace as "Clara Jane" or "Clarissa Jane.) So it seems unlikely Betsy had a son, Isaac Allen b. 1856. > Johnathan PAUGH b: 1857 1860, 1870, and 1880 census data all indicate he was born in 1858. 1857 is possible, since ages given were to be as of June 1 of the census year. > > Clara PAUGH b: 1858 > Daniel PAUGH b: 1862 "Daniel W." Note that Mrs. Sanders source: "Paugh.ftw". So it was a Family Tree Maker file. So she was using a computer and a genealogy program. The best way to duplicate individuals in a genealogy program is by importing a gedcom (or .ftw) file. You have to be very careful, and only import small family files at one time, or you end up with duplicate individuals. I think that's what most likely happened in this case. The 1860 Hampshire County census wouldn't have included a child born 1862. One thing you find in all family histories- the closer the writer is to the family discussed, the better the chance of him being right. Looks to me like Betsy McRobie's family wasn't very well researched. The Paugh family history is pathetically full of errors, and not a reliable source at all. > > Sources: > Title: McCrobie/McRobie/McCroby Family History > Author: Wilma Nuzum Sanders > Publication: Published in 1996 > Note: Was researched very thourghly before being published > Note: Primary > Repository: > Note: Waterloo Iowa > Call Number: > Media: Book > Title: Paugh.FTW > Repository: > Call Number: > Media: Other > Text: Date of Import: Feb 28, 1999 > Title: 1860 Census - Hampshire Co > Repository: > Call Number: > Media: Book > ================= > > SAM - NOTICE: There are 2 Daniels in the Family - with the same birth year? > And 2 Johnathans, one b 1857, one b 1858. This is strange indeed. > > This needs some further examination. Here is what I was looking for you for > - I have seen a Census, where there was a Paugh Family with Isaac listed as > McCrobie (spelling?). I can't seem to locate it. I haven't seen anything like that. I have several Isaac Paugh's; only one Isaac Allen, son of James Edward and Isabella (Enlow) Paugh. He was born in Sept., 1855 according to the 1900 census, where he was enumerated at Deer Park. His tombstone says 1856. I think I (finally) see what happened here. The Paugh Family History by George R. Paugh, Sr., page 19; does not list an Isaac as a son of Philip H. & Elizabeth "McCrobie". He lists "Ellen" 1848; Isiah (misspelled) Aug. 2, 1851; Clara or Clarissa 1856; Jonathan, 1858; David Circa 1851; Daniel Circa 1853. This is no doubt where Mrs. Sanders got _some of her dates, which don't all agree with the census data. In a case like this, I would prefer to go with the census data; since pre- sumably the information came directly from the parents and not from someone a hundred years after the fact. Of Isaiah, it says he was a son of Philip H. Paugh. If he was, he must have been a bastard. I think Hoye had it right when he said Betsy had him in 1851 before she married Philip Paugh. PFH says he attended 4 or 5 colleges and was a licensed Methodist pastor. His name is given on page 20 as "Isaiah C." Paugh. Whether a typographical error or misinterpretation, Hoye came up with "Isaac" instead of "Isaiah C.". This is born out by his statement concerning "Isaac" on page 432: "Before her marriage to Philip Paugh, Betsy McRobie had a son, known as Isaac Paugh, a useful and highly honored man, who became a Methodist minister and bishop of his church." So Betsy McCrobie or McRobie had no son Isaac. All of this came about because of a simple error in "Hoye's Pioneer Families". 3. Hi Pat: I only have one Isaac Paugh with the middle name ALLEN. He was the son of James Edward. I have him married first to Nancy Jane Boyer, 2nd to Perlina Sowers. In the 1900 census "Isaac A." was supposed to have been born in Sept. 1855. His wife was Perlina and they had been married 7 years (1893) and she was the mother of three children. When he married Nancy Jane Boyer, he indicated he was born in 1855. When he married Perlina Sowers however (you sent me the marriage info), he was a widower and indicated he was born in 1863. So he lied <G>. The "Graves" book has it that Nancy Jane Boyer died in 1883. I think that was a typo, should have been 1893. I have Isaac (no Allen) Paugh, born sometime between 1856 and 1861 as a son of Nicholas Paugh & Eliza Bray. 3. SAM! SAM! SAM! That's for the 3 great responses you posted about the Isaac/Betsey/Paugh scenario. Great stuff - I followed it every step of the way. Well - at least Isaac or Betsey isn't MY direct ancestor - that would really be frustrating! I will pour over the material again. One of the dumbest things I ever did was to mix so much of my material with Sander's. Not merging - actually changing. We have had our differences over the years... oh well, live and learn. Here is some little comments to your last post. I will work on the other stuff later. Thanks, Bon -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 20:56:44 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: SAM BOWSER Re: [MDGARRET] Isaac Allen Paugh & Betsy Mcrobie >I haven't found but 1 Isaac Allen Paugh, and he was the son of >James Edward. Yes - I agree. I told Pat Thompson she had an extra generation in there, when I saw this on her files, and after aqainting myself with all the data, I take that back. It appears that except for an older Isaac Paugh - the one we have been discussing belongs here. > ID: I00962 > Name: Elizabeth MCCROBIE > Sex: F > Birth: ABT. 1838 > Birth: 1825 > Death: > Reference Number: 962 > Note: They called her Betsey Interesting thing here - Sanders has Elizabeth born in 1838, and Ellen born in 1848 - er, she was only 10 years old!!! > Wonder why she concluded he was married to a Furley? From another researcher - and she has Michael's middle name as Furley. > The 1870 census indicates he was born in MD in 1868. > Note that Mrs. Sanders source: "Paugh.ftw". So it was a > Family Tree Maker file. So she was using a computer and a > genealogy program. This is scary, so brace yourself. All the information is on reams of paper and in her head! She doesn't have a genealogy program. She doesn't have a computer. That is why there are so many typos and spelling errors in the book. The typing for the printer was done by her son's secretary in her spare time. The information on the Ancestry file was done by another researcher, a son-in-law of a McRobie cousin who lives in Waterloo. A generous and tedious job - but only as good as the files he had to work with (which is what I have xeroxes of). > I think I (finally) see what happened here. Yes - you do - and now so do I. this following statement about Paugh being a highly useful man is directly quoted in her work. There are little to no sources in her book as there "were too many to mention". I always wondered where this strange wording came from --- > This is born out by his statement concerning "Isaac" > on page 432: > "Before her marriage to Philip Paugh, Betsy McRobie had a > son, known as Isaac Paugh, a useful and highly honored man, > who became a Methodist minister and bishop of his church." About Elisha's name being Elisha DeWitt McCrobie: beats me! Sanders has his mother's name simply as Mary. Maybe she is Mary DeWitt? Hmmm - any DeWitt Researchers out there? And THANK YOU so much for that information about Azsenath beiong a Davis. I have seen that on Shirley Tasker's file at Ancestry, but she didn't remember where she got it. This is reat. I love to fill in those blanks. Thanks again for everything - you are a real detail-person, and I like that! Have a good day!
