    3. This is about Homer Rodeheaver: After Dwight Moody’s death (for whom the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago is named), Revivalism continued to flourish with the idea of the revivalist having a song leader who would use and teach gospel songs/ Famous song leaders included Charles Alexander and Homer Rodeheaver, who gained popularity as Billy Sunday’s song leader. The Sunday-Rodeheaver meetings were held mostly in specially constructed tabernacles (temporary buildings with the ground covered in sawdust -- hence the term, "hitting the sawdust trail" for walking the isle to make a public decision). Rodeheaver eventually started a successful publishing company, the Rodeheaver Company (Rodeheaver Hall-Mack Company) in Winona Lake, Indiana which later became the successful Word Publishing Company (now WordMusic). http://www.smithcreekmusic.com/Hymnology/American.Hymnody/Gospel hymnody/Gospel.hymnody.html Homer Alvan is the son of Thurman Hall and Fanny Armstrong Rodeheaver. I have a birth of 4 Oct 1880 for him, in Union Furnace OH, and a death of Abt 1955. Homer would be a 1st cousin once removed to Mahala. Mahala was born abt 1849 in Mountain Dale, Preston County, and is the daughter of Isaac and Sophia Cutshaw Rodeheaver. She married Samuel J Sisler (2 Feb 1860-24 Mar 1922) abt 1881, and have at least 4 children: Grover Cleveland (May 1885-1959); Sarah E (1887-20 Jun 1888); Mary Sophia (5 Oct 1887-Mar 1981); and Andrew Jackson (1 Jan 1893-12 Jul 1965). Samuel was her 2nd marriage. My records show she was also married to John Henry Awman (10 Apr 1851-3 Mar 1879), and had a son Isaac Richard Awman (8 Aug 1875-18 Jan 1968). He was born at Cuzzart, Preston County and is buried at Centenary Cemetery. Isaac married Margaret F Faulkner (9 Jan 1880-31 Aug 1971). Mahala's sister Ellen (24 Jun 1852-16 Nov 1927) is my 2nd great grandmother. She married Ami Frankhouser (24 Jul 1854-16 Nov 1927) they were married 2 Nov 1874. Their daughter Cora is my great grandmother. I can give you more details on other members of the family if you would like. I know she married Samuel J. Sisler, and was his second wife, and was 10 years younger than he was. I was told she had a sister - Ellen - and that they were good singers, related to a Homer Rodeheaver who must have been a professional singer... ANY information would be appreciated!!! 3. OOPS = that URL didn't come out right on the copy of the message I received from the list - if you are wanting to go there - the next words on the next line belong to the link. If yours came out looking like mine - I had this on the next line: hymnody/Gospel.hymnody.html -------Original Message------- From: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 18:16:57 To: MDGARRET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDGARRET] RODEHEAVERS This is about Homer Rodeheaver: After Dwight Moody’s death (for whom the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago is named), Revivalism continued to flourish with the idea of the revivalist having a song leader who would use and teach gospel songs/ Famous song leaders included Charles Alexander and Homer Rodeheaver, who gained popularity as Billy Sunday’s song leader. 3. Bonnie, Thanks for the wonderful information. Mahalia is my 2nd great-grandmother also, through her daughter Grace Della. When Grace married Milton Oscar Friend, they had Oren Milton - my grandfather. I have a photocopied picture of Mahalia. Please let me know if you are interested in it. I would love more information on the Rodeheavers, if you'd like to contact me directly.
